Last week, during the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) technology conference, GM unveiled BrightDrop, a new business venture focused on providing electrically powered last-mile delivery solutions, software, and services. One of the new venture’s first products to market will be the BrightDrop EV600, a light commercial van with 250 miles of range, a max payload of up to 2,200 pounds, and GM’s Ultium battery and drive motor tech under the skin. The EV600 is set to arrive later this year, so we’re lining it up with the internal-combustion-based competition to see how it measures in the following GM Authority Dimensional Comparison.
Unfortunately, the wheelbase measurement for the BrightDrop EV600 is currently unavailable. However, looking over the list of rivals, we find that the 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter High Roof and High Roof Extended offer the longest wheelbase dimensions, measured at 170 inches, while the 2021 Ram ProMaster offers the shortest wheelbase at 118 inches.
That said, we do have the overall length of the BrightDrop EV600 in-hand, measuring in at 288 inches, making it longer than the majority of vehicle listed in this comparison. The average overall length of all models listed is 242.7 inches, with the longest model listed being the 2021 Mercedes-Benz High Roof Extended at 290 inches, and the shortest model listed being the 2021 Ram ProMaster at 195.8 inches.
The new BrightDrop EV600 is also 85 inches wide, making it the widest model of those listed here, which average out at 81.2 inches in the dimension. The most narrow model listed is the 2021 Chevy Express / GMC Savana at 79.2 inches.
As for the height, the BrightDrop EV600 is 107 inches tall, making it one of the taller models listed in this comparison, which average out at 100.4 inches. The tallest model listed is the 2021 Ford Transit High Roof at 110.4 inches, while the shortest model listed is the shortest is the 2021 Ford Transit Low Roof at 82.9 inches.
Finally, we have the rear door opening dimensions, which place the BrightDrop EV600 towards the bottom of the pack in terms of width, but near the top in terms of height, measuring at 60 inches and 72 inches, respectively.

I can’t lie, I do like the look of these vans. They aren’t overly Euro van looking which is a nice touch. More attractive than the Ram ProMaster and the Transit too.
Euro van design evolved out of necessity because of their narrow streets. Wide, perfectly square, walk in, best for most cargo and human ergonomics step vans/box trucks doesn’t work for them. Also they don’t want to spend on stand alone last mile delivery vehicle designs, because their apartment-living lifestyles don’t necessitate that. But why Americans have to make do with European limitations?
It looks a lot like something fedex would drive. Not something I would enjoy driving for style sake. Unless you always wanted to be seen behind the windshield of an AMTRAK train.
I think this will turn out to be a pretty smart venture for GM.
I think it should also be compared to step van (walk in van) bodies.
For example, the Utilimaster Velocity F (Ford Transit Chassis), Velocity M (Sprinter Chassis), Morgan Olson Routestar (Ford E-series, Ford F-59, and Freightliner chassis)
I agree, that was my first thought when I saw these. Seems like it competes more in that market than the standard utility van segment.
The unique part about this product in the walk in van segment is it’s pretty much the only one that is 100% OEM and not finished by an upfitter. That gives them the challenge of meeting all the various customer demands that upfitters usually handle and having to market/sell it, but also the advantage of being completely integrated. That gives a lot of advantages when you start talking about connectivity and autonomy and things of that nature. Plus you’re getting 100% of the revenue for each van sold instead of just selling the stripped chassis.
