About 4,000 2019 And 2020 Silverado MD Units Remain Unsold

Approximately 4,000 examples of the 2019 and 2020 model year Chevy Silverado Medium Duty trucks were sitting on U.S. dealer lots as the beginning of January, GM Authority has learned from sources familiar with Chevrolet‘s go-to-market plans. About 1,000 of these are 2019 Silverado MD models, while the 2020 Silverado MD accounts for the remaining 3,000. Those figures are in addition to an unspecified number of unsold 2021 Silverado Medium Duty models.

Though it makes up a small percentage of cumulative Silverado sales, the Silverado MD is seeing by far the greatest growth in the Silverado line-up in 2020, with U.S. sales growing 49.5 percent to 7,419 units year-over-year.

Silverado MD+35.6%2,7362,018+49.5%7,4194,961

The impressive increase is primarily due to low sales volumes in 2019, during which time the Medium Duty model was undergoing launch. As a result, sales volumes were naturally low due to sub-optimal availability.

7,419 units is also less than half the number of Silverado MD models taking up space on dealer lots. Unlike other Chevrolet models such as the Chevy Trailblazer crossover, of which GM can hardly build enough, the Silverado MD does not have a problem of demand exceeding supply.

The Silverado MD was introduced in late 2018 for the 2019 model year, and is available in 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD forms. Customers have a choice of Regular or Crew cabs both featuring dual rear wheels, and either the Work Truck (1WT) or LT (1LT) trim levels. All models come in the chassis cab configuration (without a bed).

The only engine available for the Medium Duty as of this writing is the 6.6L V8 L5D turbodiesel Duramax unit, which is rated at 350 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque. The truck is not mechanically related to other Chevy Silverado models, since it rides on a unique platform developed jointly by General Motors and Navistar.

The combined sales of the LD, MD and HD make the Silverado the best-selling General Motors vehicle in the United States. The 594,094 units sold in 2020 accounted for 34 percent of Chevrolet sales and 23 percent of all GM sales. Furthermore, the Silverado and its GMC Sierra corporate cousin together outsold GM’s primary rival in the segment, the Ford F-Series, during the 2020 calendar year.

  2. I am not contesting the article, but know many people/companies were looking for these trucks without luck. The few I know that were successful in taking delivery had to go out of state to get one.

The issue was (is?) further compounded with up fitting companies not understanding the parameters of the available PTO programming capabilities.

In my opinion, the medium duty GM trucks are phenomenal and competitive. My personal (anecdotal) experience is the demand exists, just can’t find where the supply is hiding.

  3. I was excited to see GM get back into the medium duty space and think they are nice trucks. That said I really think they missed an opportunity by not putting the 4500 & 5500 on a lower chassis that looked like a beefed up 3500 HD like the Ford and Ram. Ford and Ram also offer those trucks in luxury trim levels. Hopefully they have future plans to grow and improve the medium duty line. I would really hate to see them dropped again because they didn’t feel like their numbers were high enough.

    1. Part of the advantage of the Chevrolet 4500 and 5500 Silverado over the Ford and Ram…. Let’s say that you have a Ford or Ram that is out of warranty coverage and there is an issue …example… the turbo needs to be replaced or repaired. With the Chevrolet you will not have to lift the cab up 14″ to get to the issue and incur about 20 hours of labor cost to handle a simple one hour repair.

Also, the brakes on the Chevrolet 4500/5500 are the same ones that the 6500 uses.

The Chevrolet cab is the same cab as the 1/2 ton pickup so there is room for them to offer higher end packages IF they choose to in the future. This also means that the availability of parts for the cab will not be a problem.

    1. There is a Chevy dealership just east of Bristol CT on route 6 that usually has several of them on their lot. I visit my daughter once a month during the summer months and their inventory of the MDs has changed every time I go there. So they definitely are selling them or supplying other dealerships.

  8. The idiot dealers ordered the shortest wheelbase models and when i searched online, almost every one of the 2020 models sitting did not have the longest wheelbase. The dealers also did not discount them enough, possibly because sales people were trying to make a higher commission. There are a few hundred Chev and GMC dealers in Canada who could easily take half of those 2020 models in one day, but GM left the Canadian market to Navistar. Navistar is also too greedy in Canada by charging at least $10,000 more in Canada than they should based on the U.S dollar exchange rate. Only a fleet buyer gets a decent discount in Canada.

  11. Where is the motorhome version? My brother was looking for a Duramax powered toybox motorhome. The only ones you can find are over 10 years old and built on the old Kodiak/Topkick chassis with the older LMM Duramax. He wanted something with a warranty, so he bought a 2019 Silverado 2500HD Duramax and a 5th wheel toybox camping trailer. I know GM doesn’t build motorhomes anymore and the RV manufacturers are the ones at fault. Why are they still not utilizing the newer commercial chassis almost three years after it was introduced is a mystery to me. If they did I’m sure there wouldn’t be as many sitting unsold right now.

    1. This a up dated model of the Kodak version The Kodak line was the line worth of lemons that GM ever made. GM should be ordered to buy all of them back. Plus reimburse all Cost of repairs towing replace parts. THESE TRUCKS ARE JUNK THEY RIDE LIKE IS PRETTY STIFF. Do t buy one. You will be sorry..

      Reply
      1. They are medium duty work trucks…. not dressed up pickups. The ride is designed to be smoother with a load. Running around with a bare chassis is a rough ride….. Ever drove a Class 8 rig without a trailer attached?

  12. Maybe word got out that the 4500HD only does 79 miles an hour. When I asked for it to be turned of off i was told it would void the warranty. I don’t need Chevrolet to to tell me how fast to go. I have an 03 lb7 4500hd with 200,000 on it that. Gets better fuel mileage, rides nicer and is more comfortable to drive. Thats why im putting new injectors in and keeping it. Oh and no 1200 dollar payment

  14. No surprise…..just another example of GM’s ignorance. There is not a doubt in my mind if GM used any intelligence in their marketing strategies and have more than a select few dealers set up that are “allowed” to sell and service the trucks, they couldn’t build them fast enough with their current capacities. I live in heavily populated area where there is a lot industry in my area and surrounding areas as well. Not 3, not 2, but ZERO dealers in a radious of about 100 miles of my bussiness can sell me a Medium Duty Chevy because of the stipulations GM puts on their dealers. How stupid would I be to not go 1/2 mile down the road from my business and “pick and choose” a Ford or a Ram off of their lot, even though I would rather have a GM. Go ahead Ford and Ram….sellem! And my local Chevy dealer is very upset about it too!

    1. Actually any dealer can become a Medium Duty dealer. They just have to step up and buy the correct equipment to be able to handle any and all repairs. They also have to maintain a certain level of new inventory to include Demos. Many are not interested because they do not consider it profitable enough to invest the cash. They also have to have dedicated employees that are trained in all the various areas… techs, sales, parts etc

  15. I think the issue is… not enough load capacity. Especially on a 6500. You can get an F750 with 33,000 GVW. But the best Chevy can manage is about 10,000lbs less. Now I know some will argue that the F750 is a small Heavy Duty truck. And maybe it and the F650 are. But the rating of an F450 or F550 is less than a true medium truck. So they’re falling right in the middle of the market. And they should’ve learned from laughing at Nissan with their pathetic attempt at a heavy half ton that fell between a half ton and a 3/4 ton that mid market is not a good place to be.

They’re good looking trucks and ride well for being an actual medium duty truck. They’re fairly comfortable compared to other medium duty trucks. But they just don’t have enough capacity.

I can say though that in Minnesota… they do seem to be selling like hot cakes. I see tons of them on the road. For all different purposes, dump trucks, tow trucks, box trucks. I’ve even seen a pickup someone made.

    2. The F750 is a larger truck. Ford now offers a F700 with the pickup cab but the specs are lower then the Chevy 6500.

    3. Chevrolet 6500 vs Ford 650. Chevy weighs in about 3,000 lbs lighter than the Ford but payload is only about 500lbs lighter.

One of the other advantages of the Chevrolet 6500 over the Ford 650…. 4×4 is offered by Chevy…not Ford

  17. Given the effects of Covid I would say those numbers are about right. A quick check of Ford commercial truck dealers in my area show a lot of new 2019 and 2021 F-650’s and 750’s (Ford skipped the 2020 MY for these models, the 2021’s were out 1st. Q 2020) in stock. Plenty of new commercial trucks available now from all makes, but I wouldn’t say there is a glut. I still say a gasoline engine option would help Silverado Medium Duty sales a lot, and supposedly we will see one in 2022

Chevrolet service centers want nothing to do with the bastardized International POS’s. Ours had timing cover and rear end leaks before 12k. I dream at night of the old 07 Kodiak….

  21. I looked for a 5500 Crew Cab 4X4 with wheel base to accept a 9′ flat bed and the real kicker in LT trim. There are a lot of these around the country. Few loaded the way you want them. I think that is the real issue, there are tons of order options and configurations to which these can come. The dealers that order them take a WAG as to what they can sell. Sometimes they win and sometimes they don’t. 4X2 is generally a no go in many parts of the country, and most seem to be 4X2 for some reason. I ended up with a ’20 3500 DRW, which wasn’t easy to find either.

It’s not the truck that they don’t want it’s the def fuel they don’t want.I’m not going to lie I have a friend that got one of them trucks as a flatbed tow truck it ride smooth it looks good but the def fuel is the biggest problem cuz if you don’t keep the def fuel up it’s just the whole truck down and you got to put it in the shop people do not want to keep going through putting their fuel in the truck and putting diesel in the truck to keep it running so I didn’t general motors need to figure out how to limit that def fuel so the truck can run and they can get more sales with that truck

    13,000$ a year premium.

With my decent credit, and agreeing this is for Personal use, not Commercial, putting my yearly mileage at 5k, my Full Coverage premium would’ve been 13k a year.

……. let’s just say: Now I’m not getting an MD 🙁
