General Motors recently notified dealers that the optional Body-Color Wheel Arch Moldings offered for GMC Sierra pickups trucks were no longer available to order, GM Authority has learned.
The GMC Sierra Body-Color Wheel Arch Moldings are an LPO-level item, which means they are installed by the dealer. The option is tagged with RPO code SF6, and was previously available on all Sierra trim levels, with the exception of the base model. Pricing was set at $685.
Previously, the GMC Sierra Body-Color Wheel Arch Moldings were available in the following colors:
- Quicksilver Metallic
- Summit White
- White Frost Tricoat
- Dark Sky Metallic
- Cayenne Red Tintcoat
- Onyx Black
It’s believed that the GMC Sierra Body-Color Wheel Arch Moldings option is no longer available to order due to a parts supply issue, and will likely be available to order again sometime in the future.
News that the GMC Sierra Body-Color Wheel Arch Moldings are no longer available to order follows an exclusive GM Authority report from October in which we revealed that the optional fender flares for the Chevy Colorado (RPO code SF5) were also unavailable to order, both on new vehicle purchases, and as a standalone accessory.
The latest 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 arrives with a slew of minor updates over the preceding 2020 model year, and follows the debut of an all-new, fourth-generation model for the 2019 model year. Notable updates for the 2021 model year include the addition of four new exterior colors (Ebony Twilight Metallic, Cayenne Red Tintcoat, Hunter Metallic, and Brownstone Metallic), a new 22-inch Multi-spoke Polished wheels option (RPO code SES), and the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, models equipped with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gas engine and the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine now offer higher tow ratings.

Body colored wheel moldings should be standard on higher trim levels period. For the guys that don’t like them painted it could be an optional delete. There would also be plenty of guys willing to trade there unpainted flares if you didn’t want them. GM is in a class of one not making them standard on higher trim levels. While I’m on the subject I also hope they redesign the flares on the 22 refresh so they extend all the way down flush with the body line. The flaps should be flowing but an independent piece. While I’m getting picky I would also like to see them get rid of the forward flap all together.
The black molding around the wheel well should be color coordinated tomato the paint.70,000 dollar Denali looks cheap even ford and Dodge have them on there trucks.
Personally, I’m a fan of the black wheel arch moldings. At the end of the day, we are taking about a truck as I believe the black wheel arch moldings will better resist dings and general wear and tear.
I’d rather have neither mouldings. If they were flares, that would be something else. Either way, they seem to reduce the size of the opening? At least the black mouldings give the illusion of a bigger wheel opening, and some contrast. The “Euro” look is kind of dated any way.
The molding just traces the existing opening. Black does make it appear bigger but the real problem is GM for decades now has made their wheel well openings too restricted. Plenty of space up top but very restricted on the lower front and back edges. All the added flaps make the issue even worse. If black is your preference then it should be a painted black on a high end models. The point being is it just looks cheap to have a bunch of unfinished black plastic that soon fades. Especially when the competition takes the extra step of painting. If painted correctly my experience is they are actually easier to maintain as well. I would agree that their is something to be said about the cleanliness of no moldings at all.
If you don’t have moldings, the rocks, sand, mud and water that get kicked up by the wheels directly impact the metal around the wheels, chipping off the paint, leading to rust.
I just wish GM could find my truck $100,000 and all I get is… ” we are sorry Sir we can’t seem to locate it at this current time”
