General Motors Will Cut Chevy Trax Production In 2021

General Motors plans to cut Chevy Trax production by 30 percent in the 2021 calendar year as compared to the 2020 calendar year, GM Authority has learned from sources familiar with GM’s production plans.

Subsequently, the Chevy Trailblazer will take up the newfound production capacity. The new 2021 Chevy Trailblazer crossover is a significantly more modern product than the Chevy Trax, and GM can’t make enough new units of the Trailblazer to keep them on dealer lots.

With the upcoming decrease to Chevy Trax production in 2021, dealers will never have more Trax inventory than they do today. As such, it’s safe to assume that there is more choice in terms of Trax models now than there will be in 2021.

So far, the Chevy Trax has been a major sales leader in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, consistently slotting into the segment’s top three spots in terms of sales volume. During Q3 of 2020, the Chevy Trax was second in the segment with 29,485 units sold, just behind the Jeep Compass, which sold 29,588 units during the same time period.

Overall, General Motors is far and away the mainstream subcompact crossover segment sales leader, with models like the Chevy Trax and Buick Encore contributing to the final sales figures. The all-new 2021 Chevy Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX are expected to continue that trend well into 2021.

Despite a decrease in Chevy Trax production, a production bump for the all-new Chevy Trailblazer will help to pad General Motors’ lead in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment. As GM Authority has covered in the past, the new Trailblazer is exceeding expectations, especially the sporty RS trim, which doubled Chevrolet’s order and sales forecast at launch. What’s more, the new Trailblazer is punching one weight class higher than intended, competing with C-segment rivals despite positioning in the B-segment.

  1. Why don’t they just, oh, I don’t know….drop it altogether since it’s an older design and free up space so the redesigned/replacement model is fully ramped up? Another example of typical GM-think costing them more money that could be better-spent elsewhere. And give Trailblazer the Trax name while at it.

  2. We own a 2018 Trax LT AWD and we love it. Since my wife & I are empty nesters it’s the perfect size for us and it’s big enough to fit our 3 young grandsons when taking them for ice cream. It’s not going to win any races but we both are rarely in a hurry. It’s not luxurious but comfortable. We do enjoy our Chevy Trax.

  3. I drive a 2015 Trax and love it. My hubby drives the 2021 Trailblazer and loves it. He’s very tall so his vehicle is better for us to go out as a family. I use my Trax for driving around myself for my work. Both great vehicles depending on your needs and situation

  4. I am driving 2019 Trax AWD LT since Sept 2019 and I found it great. I just had the oil change once and spent only. $500 on gas the entire year. No issues, no recall do far. I LOVE my trax!

  5. I have a 2016 Chevy Trax. I Love it EXCEPT for the fact that my paint is bubbling up and coming off many other Trax have done the same but GM is not fixing the obvious defective paint.

  6. Hey Dave…why does Toyota sell the slow selling CH-R, the RAV4, and the Highlander, all of them on built on the same platform…what a waste of money and don’t get me started on the outdated 4Runner, and the ugly blob looking Sequoia…which btw means pig in Native American lol😂. If your a GM hater then buy a boring Toyota rebadged as a Rebadged BMW…BMW stands for Blow Money Like Water!

  8. I have a 2018 Chevy Trax, I like it. But, now I hear Chevy is discontinuing. Chevy always get a good thing going and drops it like a heart beat. Thinking of going to Honds SUV or Subaru.

  9. I need to talk to someone about my 2021 Trax. I am not happy with it. The Ac don’t work and there is no warranty on the Ac the dearlership wants to charge me 1,800 to fix it. I have talked to a mechanic and he is saying he will charge 400. I don’t understand why the Ac has messed up and the car is only a year old. I am a single parent and I am sick. Just trying to get something reliable for my children.
