Earlier this year, General Motors’ crosstown rival, Ford Motor Company, revived the Ford Bronco nameplate with an all-new family of crossover and SUV models. Although GM says it isn’t particularly worried, The General still doesn’t have a direct rival. Nevertheless, one digital artist took it upon himself to create the following concept sketches, something which he dubs the GMC Boulder.

Recently posted to social media by transportation design student and Cadillac Studio intern Ryan Schlotthauer, the new GMC Boulder rendering takes aim at the new Ford Bronco as a futuristic, tech-savvy, and functional little off-road machine. Mixing elements of the all-new GMC Hummer EV, plus a style all its own, the Boulder looks like it’s ready to bound up the tail.

Up front, the GMC Boulder concept is equipped with a broad, flat fascia, with no clear intake section, suggesting the presence of an all-electric powertrain. The requisite tow hooks in the front bumper are flanked by vertical lighting elements, while the primary lighting elements utilize a familiar C-shaped design that’s somewhat reminiscent of the GMC Sierra 1500 and GMC Sierra HD.
Chunky off-roader rubber wraps a set of funky, geometric wheels in the corners, while the fenders are squared-off like the new Hummer EV. The profile shows just two doors for ingress and egress, while a two-tone color treatment visually separates the cockpit section from the rest of the vehicle. Up top is a complex cargo system with a trio of crossbars. The GMC Boulder logo is also on display in the lower half of the doors.

In back, we see more C-shaped lighting elements, while the GMC logo is emblazoned across the tailgate and finished in black. Mounted high on the rear hatch is a spare tire and wheel, which looks as though it’s molded into the hatch.

A design like that is sure to hurt rear visibility, but unsurprisingly, the GMC Boulder concept is dripping with futuristic tech, so a rearview camera mirror is likely in place to take up the slack. Further tech features includes what appears to be an augmented reality system that “reads” the terrain ahead for easy navigation.

Hideous. It looks like a lunar rover.
GM missed the boat by deciding not to get in on the Wrangler & Bronco segment. Oh well, at least they produce 17 different CUV’s that all vary in size by 1.5″.
Make a legitimate Wrangler/Bronco fighter and many of us GM faithful will line up in droves to purchase one!
It’s coming, the new Hummer…
One that normal people can afford.
The new Hummer costs 2-3 times the price of the Wrangler and the Bronco. GM needs something that competes in the same price range as Jeep and Ford. The Hummer EV is in a class of it own for now.
LMAO @ that thing. How about, NO!
Stick to drawing stick people.
Love it!
With a look all its own and the perfect size for City driving as well as off-roading, I would seriously consider putting my money down on this little beast!
Nope nope noooooo as a huge GM LOYALIST THIS IS NOT THE DIRECTION I WANT A BRONCO COMPETITOR TO LOOK PERIOD. The Bronco is a HUGE WIN FOR FORD AND FORD DESIGNERS. WE ALL WANT ONE, MY WIFE WANTS ONE, MY 3 DAUGHTERS WANT ONE. THEY PICK IT EVEN OVER A JEEP WRANGLER. That’s how HUGE A HOME RUN FORD HIT WITH THE BRONCO!!!! GM needs to give us something similar 🙏 a true ode to the past and classic tough in design. Nice wide fenders, big tires, aggressive design. The HUMMER H4 WAS IT, but GM IS SCREWING THAT UP FOR US!!!
Imagine being triggered by a rendering 😂
THAT THING LOOKS LIKE THE VW THING!
AWFUL….
You’re insulting the VW Thing.
First thing that came to mind was that it looked like the AMC Pacer.
REALLY , What’s the name GMC Chevette
Can’t speak for most folks, but here in the Colorado backcountry, there are NO conveniently located charging stations on any of the trails we take for weekend getaways. I agree with other posters. The design is awful and the concept is terrible if you intend it to go off-road at all.
Just not attractive. Personally not interested in EV especially not for serious off road. Competition for Bronco, not even close.
To me it has the Pontiac Aztec look to it.
It’s a huge NO for me.
Is it April already?
Haven’t GM learned from the days of the Pontiac Aztec? I hope it’s a design study, but this thing is ugly. I do however like the name. I agree with another reviewer in that it made me think of the AMC Pacer. If we ever go to Mars I think it would look great there.
Why does the future always have to look like hot wheels Halloween edition??!!
I don’t understand Why or HOW ” FORD F-150 & FORD BRONCO KEEP BEATING OUT CHEVY & GMC NOW YOU GOT DODGE RAM BREATHING DOWN OUR NECK MAKE THE D _ _ _ ! TRUCK RIGTH BRING THE ESCALADE EXT TRUCK BACK
Why is GM yielding offroad ICE to Jeep and Ford? This segment has replaced the cool muscle car with kids and either Chevrolet or GMC should be offering something more than faux Blazer in all its Pontiac excitment brand plastic cladding glory.
EV is a challenge offroad as charging stations still aren’t common but you can always bring extra gas. Barra doesn’t seem to understand these buyers
Since GM didn’t produce the Buick Avenir or Avista even after a lot of positive comment, reading each of the negative reactions here to the GMC Boulder should doom its fate. I kind of like the name GMC Boulder, though.
GMC Has at Least 10,000 Hummer EV Preorders
Shortly after its reveal, GMC opened up preorders for the new Hummer EV.
GMC hasn’t confirmed preorder totals yet, but the Detroit Free Press reports that it’s at least 10,000 trucks.
This news came from a virtual meeting between dealers and GMC boss Duncan Aldred.
Around half of all GMC dealers will make upgrades costing around $140,000 to sell the Hummer and other future GMC EVs,
including the Hummer SUV and an electric Sierra pickup. The fact that the Hummer has 10,000 pre-orders also means that
GM’s Factory Zero (née Detroit-Hamtramck) has a year’s worth of production already guaranteed.
Looks like it should say Traxxas on the side and come with a remote control. I think a true Bronco competitor needs to have a traditional power plant and a modern but classic body style.
It looks like a glorified kiddie car.
Ugly crap! GM sucks more and more each day.
That’s weird, I thought it was December but apparently it’s April 1st
If priced right? GM sells lots of small cuv’s…. at least they pick a spot where noe one else is competing
Too many people are taking this seriously. Guys, this is just something an intern put together.
Looks interesting and very reminiscent of a Gremlin or an AMC Pacer, so yeah, that’s certainly a setback when it comes it’s appearance.
Wasting money on a joke
Man, you guys are a bunch of what my Korean friend CJ refers to as “azzoles”. Dumping on something new, just because it’s new and you’re not used to it yet. Or, “it reminds me of X, lol.” Did you azzoles even read the text? A concept designed by a student, FFS, NOT an official GM concept. I am an avid off-roader and I ALSO graduated from the Art Center transportation design program, and I think it’s pretty cool. A short-wheelbased, small off-road vehicle that could scramble around in tight places. Sign me up. Nice job, Ryan S! And disregard these azzoles…they know not of what they speak.
