Chevy Silverado HD, GMC Sierra HD Recalled Over Seat Belt Retractor Issue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall notice for certain 2017 and 2018 model-year Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks over an issue related to the front seat belt retractor assemblies.

The problem: in affected pickup trucks, the front seat belt retractor assemblies may have been built with the incorrect torsion bar, which can prevent the seat belt from performing as designed in the event of a crash.

The hazards: if the seat belt retractors do not perform as intended during a crash, there may an increased risk of injury to occupants of the driver’s seat and/or front passenger seat.

The fix: dealerships will inspect both the driver and front passenger seat belt retractor assemblies of the involved Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickups and replace them. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Affected vehicles:

Affected components: seat belt retractor assembly, seat belt torsion bar.

Number of affected vehicles: a total of 38,048 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks are involved in this recall campaign.

Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealer. Those owners who may be unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall can visit my.gm.com/recalls and type in their VIN to view any open recalls or other actions that may be active on their vehicle. This recall campaign is expected to begin on December 28th, 2020.
