Chevy Malibu, Buick Regal And LaCrosse Recalled Over Rusting Rear Toe Links

General Motors has issued a recall for certain Buick Lacrosse, Buick Regal and Chevy Malibu vehicles due to an issue with the rear suspension toe links.

2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS

The problem: in vehicles located in states affected by cold winter weather conditions, the rear toe links may have received excessive electrocoating corrosion protection, which can cause the coating to become brittle and break away when contacted by road debris. Over time, the e-coat may chip away entirely, exposing the metal toe link and making it more susceptible to corrosion. If enough corrosion accumulates on the toe link, it may eventually cause it to thin and ultimately fracture.

The hazards: if a rear toe link fractures, the driver may be unable to properly control the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: dealers will be instructed to replace the rear suspension toe links and adjuster fasteners in affected vehicles. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner. GM says parts for this recall campaign are not currently available. As such, owners will be mailed an interim notification on February 15th, 2021, with a second notification set to arrive once the parts become available. The second letter is expected to be sent out in late March.

Affected vehicles:

  • 2012-2013 Buick Regal
  • 2013 Chevy Malibu
  • 2010-2013 Buick Lacrosse

Affected components: rear toe link.

Number of affected vehicles: 213,128 vehicles are affected by this problem in the United States, with another 8,577 in Canada. Only vehicles from the following states are involved in this recall campaign: Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealer. If owners are unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall, they can visit my.gm.com/recalls and type in their VIN to see any open recalls or other actions that may be active on their vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had yet to post this recall to its online database at the time of publication.

  3. Why am I not surprised? Had a Colorado that literally rusted in two. Another traverse that had constant suspension issues including rust. I’be been a life long chevy fan and owner, but I’ll never but another chevy as long as that Mark clerk CEO is running the company.

  4. Aggressive positive action after full disclosure….all because they excessively protected an important part. Kudos and hurray for GM. This is a forward looking, technology blooming, responsible and trustworthy American based world company. Being the leading vehicle company in this epoch of manufacturing means something other than just production numbers. Awesome GM!

    1. It required only headlights? That sounds like a good service record 😂

    2. You could always stop buying GM and go back to your beloved Ford, but of course then you’d have to deal with owning a underwhelming and POS Ford. Looks like you’re in-between a rock and my washboard abs (a hard place).
