The Corvette accounted for 55 percent of the segment’s sales volume in Q3 2020. However, we should note – as we usually do – that most other segment contenders in this segment cost significantly more than the Corvette and, as a result, these higher-priced rivals typically see lower sales volumes.
The second-place Porsche 911 sold roughly 4,800 less units, a decrease of eight percent on a year-over-year basis, accounting for 14 percent segment share. All other models saw a segment share of 7 percent or less. It’s also worth noting that, along with the Corvette, the Porsche 718, Audi R8, Mercedes-Benz SL- and SLC-Classes, plus Nissan GT-R all posted increases in sales volume during Q3 2020.
The premium sports car segment expanded an average of more than 16 percent to 11,474 units in Q3 2020, meaning that Corvette sales outpaced the segment more than two-fold.
The GM Authority Take
The increase in Chevy Corvette sales during the third quarter of 2020 is welcome news for several reasons. First, the last-generation model – the Corvette C7 – has been out of production since November 2019, while the launch of the all-new 2020 Corvette C8 got off to quite a rocky start. First, production was delayed due to the UAW strike toward the end of the 2019 calendar year.
Then, once production actually got underway, it was quickly paused due to the coronavirus outbreak, preventing the Bowling Green plant from building enough units to generate any substantial sales volumes. Specifically, the the Corvette C8 began arriving at dealers in limited quantities in March. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused production to be idled about a week thereafter, with less than 3,000 units of the C8 produced. C8 production started back up in mid-May, and very few units actually ended up making it to dealerships by the time the second quarter of 2020 came to a close. The increase in sales in the third quarter is hopefully a good sign of what is to come for the Corvette C8.
Moving forward, we expect Corvette sales to continue picking back up in the short-term, as long as production continues uninterrupted at the GM Bowling Green plant, which assembles the Corvette, at the GM Tonawanda Engine plant, which assembles the 6.2L V8 LT2 engine, as well as the various suppliers responsible for providing parts for the vehicle. In the medium-term, we expect Chevy Corvette sales to skyrocket as a result of strong demand, and very high levels of interest in the new mid-engine Corvette.
It’s also worth noting that the C8 Convertible recently went into production in August. Additionally, General Motors will not fulfill all of 2020 Corvette orders as a result of the downtime caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the automaker will offer affected customers a 2021 model year car, though it’s worth noting that some 2021 Corvette features and package will see a price increase.

It’s not a number of unit race, it’s about making money and guess what porsche(vw) and Mercedes without taking the trouble of mass prodcution, make much more money than GM’s Corvette bring, luxury segment never been about dumping prices to bottom but American car makers still don’t understand that simple fact, just make the most luxurious car possible, price doesn’t matter, crowds don’t think that way, they just admire and make your brand value go up.
Price does matter… I have never bought a Corvette, but with this European design, and mid engine, got me sold. I can’t afford a fancy priced European sports car, and I do not want one if I could. The fact that I can afford this C8 and it being American, that’s the best thing!! At this price, American should by American products, especially when it comes to sport cars..
Very nicely said. BUY AMERICAN ! Can’t go wrong with the new America’s Heartbeat C8
That’s right be American buy American if you can find a GM made in USA. Lot of GM vehicles are foreign made.
In America men don’t wear short rise, hip-hugging trousers and fitted shirts.
Nothing wrong with fitted shirts man! Fitted clothing is nice and presentable, compared to wearing only loose t-shirts with messages on them.
I bought my new loaded ’12 GS ‘vert for $75K list. Mostly for road trips and cruising. It had an ample trunk. The new one is a different animal and despite the base price, an equipped one is a lot more money. Love the new ‘vette, but I’m driving a Mustang now.
It’s pretty simple understanding the new C8 . I own one and performance gets a 10 , ride gets a 8. That mid engine is awesome for the ride. Quiet, I think quietest Vette ever. Style??? A mix of Ferrari and Lamborghini. They really did an excellent job. I like it quite a bit more than my previous Z 06
the front might be ferrari/lamborghini, but the rear screams camaro.
This is my 3rd corvette and they hit a Home Run with this one!– I loved my other cars C6 & C7 both Z51 – but I wont be looking back for sure!- The handling- The looks, Everything about it– Awesome job!!
They need to make enough so you can pick one out at the dealer and not get hosed with add on charges. When you see one in person the colors look way different.
What the heck are you talking about. First of all the playing field is the same for everyone. The car is a hell of a deal even a LT1 is what I bought. It is generously loaded with all you know. Educate yourself before speaking.
Of course, the Dbags got to have 1st dibs 🙃🙂🙃…..
Stupid statement! Get your money up then maybe you can get in the cool guy club. The type of club where us guys compensate for things ya know.
“The type of club where us guys compensate for things….”
Amplifying the stereotype?….🙃
Damn, I felt my IQ lower by reading this post…
This is my first corvette. I always had an appreciation for mid engine vehicles , beside the Pontiac Fiero I bought new this is something I was waiting for a mid engine corvette much more reliable than the European mid engine sport cars and for considerably less money.
More than a fair price with a good warranty. I am also surprised at the mileage the car gets. the first 1700 miles I have averaged 22 mpg on good premium fuel. Handles like a rat with sneakers ,I love this car !
Congratulations on your purchase! Glad you are enjoying this corvette.
The sales in North America is Great! I wonder how competitive C8 is in the world.
I’m trying to get one. I hope they produce enough 2021’s that everyone that has placed an order for one gets one this time.
It all sounds good, I can’t wait for the RHD models to come to Australia. We haven’t even been given a MSRP yet, but estimates put it around AU$150,000-AU$200,000. That’s out of my league but I’ll be buying a few Lotto tickets in the meantime.

Question, is there a Tesla model sports car that we can compare sales numbers?
I wonder what percentage of sales are ’19 models. The command will get better because we are still waiting on the Z06, E-Ray, ZR1 & Zora.
And the low hanging fruit for lack of sales volume is the NSX. Plant must of idled due to the pandemic?
I wonder what spillover of tech there will be from this to the next gen Camaro? Rear engine Camaro next?
