The subcompact mainstream crossover segment expanded nearly 9 percent to 243,867 units during Q3 2020. As such, the Encore’s 55 percent decrease in sales volume significantly under-performed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
We attribute the decline in Buick Encore sales volume during Q3 2020 to the following factors:
- Sub-optimal supply of the vehicle at dealers, and
- Internal cannibalization from the Buick Encore GX, a newer and more premium and more attractive offering
We expect Buick Encore sales to continue at depressed levels for the foreseeable future, as the Encore GX continues to attract buyers, while the Encore attains value-conscious buyers as Buick heavily incentivizes the Encore so as to make it significantly more affordable than the Encore GX. In fact, we recently saw the very first step to doing just that via a price decrease on a key AWD Encore model.
Together, the Encore and Encore GX should be able to do quite a bit of damage in this space as supply returns to more optimal levels.

Old, dated, not desirable. And reviews on Encore GX haven’t been kind. Nonetheless combined sales are north of 30,000 units.
Building China Encore on an non Federalized platform was a big blunder for N America. New Envision is a beautiful design but much larger so not enough to capture lost sales.
Even in a crowded class of SUVs/ Crossovers, the Buick Encore has sold well. It has consistently increased its sales year over year. GM is the problem. They want people to buy the GX. I would imagine it cost the same, or less to produce. Just a higher sticker price. Bigger profits. Not what people want, it’s what GM wants.
Elimination of the Essence option in favor of the GX was a terrible idea. We have 2018 and 2019 vehicles. My 2018 Essence gets better mileage than the 2019 with auto-stop. Both are better than the GX models I have test driven. Back in the day, I drove Geo Metros for 5 years, getting 50mpg in a car that was fun to drive, while our family of five commuted an hour each way, five days a week. Why does GM insist on innovation in the face of, and at the expense of, SUCCESS?
The main problem with the Encore is supply. GM want to push the more expensive, less desirable, Encore GX. All the reviews I have read on the GX have been less then flattering. Basicly saying the GX is not worth the money. We have a 2018 Encore, and we love the little thing. I believe the GX would out sell the original Encore only due to lack or vehicles. Not because the GX is a better choice. Which it’s not.
