2021 Chevrolet Malibu XL 2.0L Turbo Launches In China

Last August, General Motors introduced the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu XL in China with the addition of the turbocharged 1.5L LFV I4 engine as the standard powertrain on the mid-range LT trim levels. Now, the company has just launched the 2021 Malibu XL with the more powerful 2.0L Turbo engine to complete the new model year lineup of the midsize sedan in the Chinese market.
It’s worth noting that the 2.0L Turbo engine is exclusive to the Redline trim level of the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu XL, serving as the top-of-the-line variant for the model in China. This configuration highlights the sporty character of the Malibu, as part of Chevrolet‘s specific business strategy in the Asian country to improve its image and attract younger buyers.
Unlike the model in North America – where it is offered with the 2.0L LTG I4 engine, the range-topping variants of the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu XL on the Chinese market are equipped with the 2.0L LSY I4 engine, which is more modern and refined. This turbocharged engine delivers 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, mated to GM’s nine-speed automatic transmission.
Aesthetically, the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu XL Redline remains unchanged from the previous model year. Its most prominent attributes are its darkened grille finish, glossy black window frames and wheels, small contrasting red accents around the body, and specific 18-inch wheels that give it an aggressive appearance.
Meanwhile, the interior of the 2021 Malibu XL Redline features some equipment upgrades with the adoption of the brand’s latest solutions and technologies. These include Chevrolet’s latest infotainment system with support for multiple local services, the OnStar telematics system with standard 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and a digital instrument panel with updated graphics.
The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu XL Redline with the 2.0L Turbo engine is now available in China, expanding the brand’s flagship sedan range in the Asian country. In total, the Malibu XL’s Redline trim level features three variants configured to serve a wider range of customer needs in the Chinese market. The suggested prices of these three editions are as follows:
- 2021 Malibu XL Redline “Sharp Edition”: 194,900 CNY (about $29,790 USD at the current exchange rate)
- 2021 Malibu XL Redline “Ruilian Edition”: 204,900 CNY ($31,320 USD)
- 2021 Malibu XL Redline “Ruizhi Edition”: 219,900 CNY ($36,610 USD)

This Redline Edition Malibu looks sharp. If you want to attract a younger buyer in North America, best you at least offer the 3.6 310 hp gas engine so it can stay competitive.
All of it’s competitors have turbo engines except the camry. Having said that, I would prefer the LTG with more power.
Chevy and Ford managed to sell more sedans here in States than most of their competitors so I dont get why are they pulling a plug on Malibu and fusion. Make em more refined but instead they have mastered how to give up
Doesn’t matter how many you sell, it matters how much money you make. Most of those sedans go to rental car, government and business fleets. They have to dedicate a line and do engineering for those very low-margin sales. Then rentals particularly get resold in a short as 12 months, which drives down used prices, which then drags down your new retail price.
Discontinue them and fleets will still have to buy cars. Government will still have to buy domestic, so they’ll instead buy your higher margin and far more popular CUVs instead.
As a person who has owned Chevrolets for about 5 decade’s. Its sad to see the domestic brands turn away from sedans. Here is what GM should do. Taket the slow selling 2.7 truck motor drop it in a sport tunned Malibu SS putting out 355 hp. And freak everybody out.
This ship has passed. The late ‘80’s FWD 4 door V6 Malibu & Malibu Max SS’s were a joke. My real Chevelles 1970 – 1987: 65 El Camino, 66 Malibu sport coupe, 72 Malibu 350 2V, 72 Chevelles SS350 4v, 64 Malibu SS vert 283 power glide, 70 Chevelles SS396 4 sp air (stupidly sold in 87 to buy a 79 vette that I still have), Mix in a 75 Rally Sport Camaro, 79 Z28 new, and a 84 Monte Carlo SS, new (needed a family car. LOL!). Those were the days!
I like your thinking 👍
I’ll buy a Malibu SS putting out 355 and even a Blazer SS with same HP. LOL

I personally own a 2021 Chevy Malibu Redline as pictured. I love it. Its sleek, efficient, and UNQUE looking. I am pretty sure I am the only one within at least a 100 mile radius that has this particular Chevy Malibu. I only wish the windows in mine were tinted, but I am looking at hiring someone to do that.
I financed this vehicle last year instead of leasing the Cruze I had previously had because the 0% financing I landed for the length of the loan was worth it. The price was fair. I think with trade in on my 2018 Chevy Cruze (leased) my payment went up maybe $60-$70 more or less with car insurance also for the Malibu but the deal was awesome and I love this car. I feel safe in it and stylish yet a little sporty looking also. I have always loved the Malibu so I am partial to the model, and Chevy (yeeyee). I have owned a total of 3 Malibu’s now. One in 2009, 2015 and now this Beautiful 2021 Redline Addition. I don’t plan to trad her in any time soon, if ever.
