Two weeks after introducing V2X communication technology at the 2020 Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition, General Motors has just officially launched this innovative mobility solution on the 2021 Buick GL8 Avenir range. As such, Buick’s full-size MPV becomes the first series-production vehicle to adopt Vehicle-to-Everything technology in China.
The 2021 Buick GL8 Avenir arrives in the Chinese market as the second model year of the comprehensively updated vehicle that debuted in late March, which introduced significant improvements in interior design, comfort and technology. With this new addition, the Tri-Shield brand’s flagship in China revolutionizes the luxury MPV segment as the most advanced model in its class.
“The new entries showcase the relentless evolution of Buick’s flagship, setting a new industry benchmark in safety and intelligent driving,” said Executive Director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM, Molly Peck, in a statement. “Building upon the sculptural design and high level of comfort that Buick is known for, the rollout of innovative technologies is reinforcing the brand as the forward-looking technology leader, offering our customers a safer and smarter mobility experience for tomorrow,” she added.
The V2X technology available in the 2021 Buick GL8 Avenir family enables vehicles to communicate with each other and with the traffic infrastructure, aiming to improve safety and reduce congestion. This system supports eight vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) applications, including emergency braking warning, loss of control warning, abnormal vehicle warning, intersection collision warning, speed limit warning, signal violation warning, hazard location warning and green light optimization speed advisory.
Thanks to the implementation of the new Buick eCloud electrical architecture, better known as GM Global B electronic architecture, the 2021 Buick GL8 Avenir’s V2X technology offers high-speed connectivity and data transmission. This allows analyzing the complex road environment in real time with precision and reliability, quickly warning the driver of any potential safety threats.
For example, the Control Loss Warning V2V application warns the driver when it receives information for a vehicle in front that has activated its anti-lock brakes or stability control system to avoid a crash, while the Green Light Optimization Speed Advisor (GLOSA) V2I application provides a recommended speed to arrive at the next intersection when the light is green, allowing to cross it without stopping.
The 2021 Buick GL8 Avenir with V2X communication technology is now available from the brand’s dealer network in China. The new smart mobility solution comes standard on each of the three luxury MPVs sold in the Chinese market, including the standard seven-seat version, the six-seat mid-range variant and the four-seat flagship. The suggested prices remain unchanged and are as follows:
- 2021 GL8 Avenir (seven seats): 459,900 CNY (about $70,250 USD at the current exchange rate)
- 2021 GL8 Avenir (six seats): 465,900 CNY ($71,170 USD)
- 2021 GL8 Avenir (four-seat flagship): 529,900 CNY ($80,950 USD)

It is just not right or fair, that such a great new Buick mini-van should only be available in China. I would buy one in a minute.
