Refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition To Get Larger Screen Than GM SUV Rivals

The upcoming refresh for the 2022 Ford Expedition will include a massive new infotainment screen inside the cabin. The new screen in the 2022 Expedition will outsize the infotainment screen in GM’s latest next-gen, full-size SUVs.

The refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition comes with a mammoth infotainment screen.

The refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition comes with a mammoth infotainment screen.

As reported by our sister publication, Ford Authority, recent spy photos of a 2022 Ford Expedition prototype reveal that the upcoming Blue Oval brand product comes with an enormous, vertically oriented display mounted in the vehicle’s center stack. The screen looks as though it’s taken directly from the Mustang Mach-E, Ford’s new all-electric crossover, which boasts a screen measured at 15.5 inches.

By comparison, rival products from General Motors come equipped with much smaller infotainment screens, as the 2021 Chevy Tahoe, 2021 Chevy Suburban, and 2021 GMC Yukon all come standard with a 10-inch infotainment screen. In addition to the new, larger touchscreen, the 2022 Ford Expedition will also come with several other updates for the interior, as well as revised exterior styling to boot.

Based on the Ford T3 platform, the Ford Expedition is currently the Blue Oval brand’s largest utility vehicle, with full-size exterior measurements and body-on-frame construction based on a modified version of the half-ton architecture underpinning the Ford F-150.

The Ford Expedition comes equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 gas engine producing 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, which connects to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Expedition also comes with a four-wheel independent suspension setup.

The infotainment screen in the all-new 2021 Chevy Tahoe is much smaller, by comparison.

With it’s new, larger infotainment screen, the 2022 Ford Expedition has a leg up on its GM SUV rivals in terms of screen real estate. However, the way in which that screen will play out with regard to integration with the rest of the refreshed Expedition’s interior remains to be seen.

  1. Very tacky. When will this stupid trend end? The 8 inch screen in my Malibu is perfectly sized and not a distraction.

  2. Holy Smokes why don’t we just stick a 75″ touch screen TV in there! This is getting so ludicrous! Its a real sad day in the automotive world when “my screen is bigger than yours” is more important than the vehicle itself.

  3. If done right, it looks good and flows with the design of the vehicle. Ford got it wrong, these huge verticle screens break up the flow of the interior lines, and the aspect ratio for backup camera’s android auto/apple car play is not correct. Screen size in SUV’s and trucks is the new tow wars, just another BS pissing contest. I think that a 10.x” to a 12.x” is more than enough. Even an 8.x” with the right design and UI is more than enough is designed well.

  4. Ford’s approach on updating their interiors: Slap a giant screen on old interiors with subpar materials and call it a day. 👏🏻

    1. Has Americans become so addicted to their cell phones that big screens are the thing they look for in the vehicle they buy? I want the driving experience of the vehicle not the infotainment screen. That screen is just something else to distract drivers and make them more dangerous than they are when texting on their phones and driving. I wouldn’t buy a vehicle with a large screen that’s something else to go wrong that only the over priced dealer service department can handle.

  5. The screens are big and are only going to get bigger. With these and all vehicles eventually going electric the screen sizes will become massive like Tesla with almost all controls and functions feeding through it.

  6. Someone just go ahead and beat everyone else to it. Make the entire friggin windshield a screen and end the “mine is flatter than yours” war. Honestly, this is another reason for me to not buy a Ford 🤣 I need a map application and backup camera (for my trailer) I don’t use one to actually back up. Just rented a Dodge Charger. Some of the HVAC options are on the touch screen, under 3 tabs. Just give me a hard button please.

  8. 15 inches is just too big as something even the size of the new Apple iPad at 10.2-inches might be too large; I did like the approach used by Cadillac in 2012 with a combination of dials and a hide-away 8-inch display.

  9. Why didn’t they go a tad larger and install a Jumbotron! This is about as ugly as it gets!

  12. Seriously. I drove a new Tahoe this weekend and found the screen to be “just right” size. Guy at work has a Ram Limited with the 12 inch and it’s overkill too standing vertical like that. Maybe a horizontal design like the Caddy but this tablet look jutting from the dash like a an electronic billboard looks like crap!

    1. I drove a new rental RAM Laramie with the smaller screen size earlier this year and I liked it – though the thing was huge. Even after my Yukon. Interior with the smaller screen was attractive, as advertised. System worked well. I don’t know what this huge screen trend is all about. We drive these things, not play video games on them. And the ford design solution just looks lazy.

  13. The giant screen trend in vehicles has to go away soon. The screen in this Expedition prototype looks so half-baked and poorly implemented compared to the current model’s 8 inch display screen.

  14. Old guys don’t like big screens. Most Young people that will be buying this and other vehicles for the next 40 years do. That’s why Ford did this. If you don’t like big screens then just wait cuz vehicles are not going backwards with tech.

  15. It looks like a screen that the police use in their vehicles, definitely Overkill. I have a caddy xt6 with a 8-in screen it is just right although I do feel that the large screens are more impressive so long as they are built into the dash and not sticking up like an afterthought.. those large screens are very distracting at night I turn my dash lights down

  17. This is my take.
The customer should make this decision and will.
Tesla clearly got it right per their customers.
The current Cadillac other than the new Escalade and may be the new Lyriq got it wrong per their customers.
The new GM trucks got it wrong per their customers.

Cadillac Matt got it right, old guys don’t like screens or tech, I mean real tech, they just don’t get it !

I can hook up a trailer in seconds with my new 2020 Denali HD, and a larger screen would be better !!!
    That’s tech that works !
That’s tech that makes money !!

But lets be clear, I DO NOT THINK, ALL vehicles need a large screen, and maybe some do not need one at all, it should be an option on a different interior on some vehicles, and trucks are one !
Some guys just do not need them and do not want them !

  18. Did you know dashes weren’t designed to be big huge, good for gobby screens? Personally it seems that you need a screen for maps, audio, etc. Not to be the only thing seen in the vehicle.

  19. I would get so tired of that giant screen. Agree with others that 8-10in is more than enough

  20. But look a the bright side, owners can load a sore thumb screensaver. The 2021 Escalate is the right way to do big screens.

  21. Please people here quit saying 8-10″ screens are ” Good Enough ”

That seems all GM hears is 8″ is ” Good Enough ”

That’s how we got 8″ in an $80,000.00 truck !!!!!!!!!

When the real customers speak – the ones who WANT to buy vehicles, they NEVER say X is ” Good Enough ”

The REAL customers who drive excitement into a brand or product, NEVER settle for ” Good Enough ”

Also the CHEAP GM, all they hear is 8″ is ” Good Enough ” !
The CHEAP GM does NOT even hear the 10″ part of the 8-10″ !

If you tell GM that 6 – 12″ is ” Good Enough ”
GM hears ” our customers said 6″ was ” Good Enough ” !!!!!!!!

    PLEEEEEEEAAAAAAAASSSSSSSEEEEEEEE !!!!!

Quit telling GM that the ” Good Enough ” product is what customers want !!!!!!!

Because the REAL customers, who are buying and USING GM products want BETTER !!!!!!!

    A main stream Chevrolet ” grocery getter ” Equinox – a 10″ screen is ” Good Enough ” at $35,000.00 or less !!!
    A $80,000.00 truck or a $100,000.00 Cadillac or Denali or Hummer, a 10″ screen is NOT ” Good Enough ” !!!!!!

  22. Dear Lord, enough, already! 15 inches is way over the top. It’s not like the 8 and 10 inch screens aren’t enough to have to see around, especially at night, when their light is glaring at you in the face… That kind of of thing is precisely why I’d choose the GM. I don’t need all that. I don’t want all that. And I’m the one paying for it.

  23. It seriously looks like they just glued a screen to the center stack. I know they didn’t, but… that’s what it looks like. What a friggin’ mess!

If my HVAC and tow controls are through a screen and not physical buttons, count me out.

  24. I think the format in the 2021 Escalade is very thought out, extremely good looking and totally programable so you basically format the screen to show what you want it to show when you need it. There will be times when I want a image from a camera to show through the steering wheel showing me where I am going, not often, but occasionally. Having Apple car show on the dash to the right of the steering wheel is nice. I haven’t received my new Escalade yet, but I have bee introduced to the infotainment system and it appears totally acceptable me. The Ford Expedition screen is so protruding and prominent that I feel it will be extremely distracting. Not that I would ever buy a Ford product

  25. Yey all you old guys, did you use an 8″ atlas when traveling or one of those 18″ x 24 ” ones ?

My mom and dad had a huge one, still in the closet !

Argued over every turn and that thing was HUGE !!! NOT 8″

This has NOTHING to do with the screen size, per say , its USAGE !!!!

The camera tech and the navigation tech, need a larger screen than 8″

You can look at your phone and its better than an 8″ screen because you can get the phone screen closer to your face !!

In days past, this very thing would be standardized for safety by SAE !!

Not today, the old, cheap, GM just wants it cheap !

  26. You sound purty cheap. That dash covering screen is so overboard. Like where’s the fan speed? Whoops that light was pink.

  27. Yes you are right but just wait until your eyes go bad at 40 years old and you won’t be able to see that screen anymore because your eyes can’t adjust..

    1. Martin,
if your comment is to say that a larger map is better as your eyes get bad, why is the larger screen not better ?

And I am 52, and my eyes have started getting bad !

Like in my 2020 Denali HD I do NOT use the rear view mirror camera as my eyes can not adjust focus quick enough any longer !

This is the very reason you need a LARGER screen than 8″.

I have said this before but when the 8″ screen splits in my 2020 Denali HD, in camera mode, the size of the screen per image is as small as my phone sitting on the dash !!
      TOO SMALL !!!

      Reply
      1. It’s not really the size of the screen it’s how close it is to you. Get your phone screen and stick it up against your eyes and tell me if you could read it… You can easily watch a 60-in television from 15 ft away but try it from 7 ft away.. I agree with you the rearview mirror camera is nauseating as is the head-up display. I keep the head up down low so if I lean up I can glance at it but never in my line of sight.. before I bought the xt6 I test drove a Lincoln aviator I think the screen may have been 10 or 12 in but it was up so close that I kept leaning back to see it.. just so you know you could get that corrected through contacts..I have two different contacts in my eyes I can read small print but still anything very close is annoying

    It’s still a Ford.

  29. I think it’s bull crap that people are saying this is the new trend that everyone is guilty of which needs to die as if GM didn’t have to literally be forced by y’all’s cries about the interior not being pretty enough in the pickups or any of their interiors? That’s just being delusional. In GM’s defense, they’ve held out for a long time on the Massive Digital Display War. There’s even older trucks like the Lexus LX 570 which has this long 12.3-inch screen but with the same software from like 2012. Gigantic corny screens with the same level of functionality as the 7-inch screens they’re replacing from yesteryears. When Cadillac did go big they did it 100% right with the industry’s first OLED display in a automobile. So put some respect on Cadillac’s name. Haha

  30. Some things like navigation directions and maps could be over-layed on the windshield. Kind of a heads up display on the center third of the windshield. Doing so will keep the driver looking forward instead of down. Vehicles with heads up displays already have turn-by-turn directions on the small display projection. The images are translucent, so you can see through them. Vision is not obstructed.

  31. I have a 2019 GMC Sierra with the 7″ Screen and it suites me just fine, I primarily use it for my Bluetooth Music Playlist and Phone Calls every now and then, I won’t knock down the reality that there are some people who really buy into oversized Tablet-Like features within the center of the Dashboard in order to lay down cash for a new ride, just don’t get caught off guard when you start your vehicle and you begin to experience Freezes and unexpected Blackouts on those screens, sadly, a lot of us have already had that venture and it sucked!
