Refreshed 2021 Buick GL6 Mild Hybrid Launches In China

Shortly after revealing the first official pictures and information of the refreshed compact-sized MPV earlier this month, SAIC-GM has just launched the 2021 Buick GL6 with several significant changes in China. According to General Motors’ joint venture, the biggest change to the 2021 GL6 is that it is now offered exclusively with a mild hybrid powertrain on all versions.

The 2021 Buick GL6 Mild Hybrid comes standard with a powertrain comprised of a turbocharged Ecotec 1.3L three-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed DSS automatic transmission, as well as a 48-volt electric motor and battery guided by a power management module. As in the new Buick Excelle GT Mild Hybrid, this hybrid powertrain produces 161 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque.

The automaker claims that this technology in the 2021 Buick GL6 Mild Hybrid will provide a new generation of Chinese families with a better travel experience, thanks to smoother starts, smoother acceleration and a quieter drive. At the same time, the vehicle’s combined cycle fuel consumption is as low as 38.6 mpg (6.1 L/100 km), which is 7.6% less than the previous model’s average.

At launch, the 2021 Buick GL6 Mild Hybrid lineup is divided into the following three trim levels: Elite, Luxury and Premium. All versions have a 2+2+2 interior seating configuration and incorporate a class-leading list of standard features. The updated 2021 GL6 notably includes new dual 10.25-inch displays in a single panel, integrating a digital instrument panel and a central infotainment system interface.

Additionally, the 2021 Buick GL6 Mild Hybrid adopts a host of standard active safety features, including Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert, and Automatic Parking Assist. Meanwhile, a standard panoramic moonroof, a nano-level PM2.5 purifying air conditioning system and a Buick Live Sound surround audio system help create a comfortable and refreshing environment.

The 2021 Buick GL6 Mild Hybrid is now on sale in the Chinese market – the only one where this MPV is marketed, maintaining the most spacious cabin in its class with a highly flexible seating configuration and a maximum cargo volume of 53.7 cubic feet. Along with the refreshed GL8 Avenir, GL8 ES and GL8 Classic, the 2021 GL6 Mild Hybrid gives Buick the broadest and most modern MPV lineup in China.

The suggested prices for the three versions of the 2021 Buick GL6 Mild Hybrid are as follows:

  • 2021 GL6 Elite: 149,900 CNY (about $22,770 USD at the current exchange rate)
  • 2021 GL6 Luxury: 159,900 CNY ($24,290 USD)
  • 2021 GL6 Premium: 169,900 CNY ($25,810 USD)
