GMC will prioritize production of Crew Cab models in the 2021 GMC Sierra HD pickup truck range for the remainder of the 2021 model year, GM Authority has learned from sources familiar with the brand’s go-to-market strategy. This will be at the expense of the Regular Cab and Double Cab versions, whose production and availability will be limited (but not reduced to zero) during this period.
The limited availability of GMC Sierra HD cab styles follows a similar situation for its corporate cousin, the 2021 Chevy Silverado HD. Currently, Chevrolet dealers can only place retail orders for Silverados with the Crew Cab body style.
The reason is the same in each case. GM has lost four months of cumulative production in the past 12, or one-third of the year, due first to the United Auto Workers (UAW) union strike in late 2019 and then to the shut down caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the first half of 2020.
As with the Chevy Silverado, Crew Cab versions of the GMC Sierra are in higher demand than the Regular Cab or Double Cab. Disappointing as the new situation may be for potential customers who prefer the other body styles, it is nothing more or less than good business practice for GM to respond to the demand for Crew Cabs first now that production is back up to its previous levels.
The 2021 GMC Sierra HD Crew Cab, Standard Bed starts at $41,895 for the 2500HD base with GM’s 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, and mated to GM’s six-speed heavy-duty automatic transmission and 2WD (RWD). Opting for the Crew Cab, Long Bed configuration (which increases the box length from 82 inches to 98 inches) costs $200 more. The optional 6.6L L5P V8 turbodiesel Duramax engine with 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque mated to the 10-speed “Allison” automatic gearbox adds $9,750 to the price of the heavy duty pickup truck.
The range-topping 2021 GMC Sierra HD Denali Crew Cab, Standard Bed starts at $66,990 with the gasoline L8T motor, while the Crew Cab, Long Bed configuration starts at $67,190. Opting for the L5P diesel brings those starting prices up to $76,245 for the Crew Cab, Standard Bed and to $76,445 for the Crew Cab, Long Bed.

A good reason not to buy either the GMC or the Silverado!
Sounds like good business sense, most buyers want the full crewcab anyway
The gassers are too expensive these days. Bring out the electric version. Or wait till Ford brings out the F150 and be second!
Just another example of how general motors just dictates what you’re going to get not what you want necessarily, along with the bean counter Barra I still think they’re not heading in the right direction just an opinion. instead of general motors I think they’ll eventually be electric motors.
So, buy another make.
Hi. I sell GMCs. I find maybe 1 in 100 HD customers are looking for anything other than a crew cab standard bed. This is quite specifically a much-needed response to consumer demand. We went 4 months of this year without a single unsold HD truck on the lot. I couldn’t even demonstrate one for customers considering switching brands. I’ve sold more trucks than any previous year, with almost all of them reserved with a deposit before it arrived. Last week we had 2 days with one on the lot. I sold it Saturday and I’m back to not having a single one available again. Prioritizing production of what actually sells is good business. If you feel you must criticize them then do so for waiting so long to make that call.
Can’t argue with that, even though I am the 1 in 100 customer. I can wait. Might be some updates for 2022 anyway.
I’ve read up to 90% less parts in an EV vs Gas. Bolt in the motor and pack and it’s built.
Been thinking about the white paint situation. Could they powder coat vehicles faster then they can paint them?
Or what about when they run the body through the dip dank; use white paint then clear coat over that?
They should just use this opportunity to retool for the new interior and get that out as fast as possible, they are losing so much ground and marketshare. Ford and Rams interiors are just so much nicer.
Been waiting on an at4 since early October. Apparently invoiced sitting in Michigan? Wonder what the hold up is?
