General Motors Recalls Chevy, GMC, Buick And Cadillac Models Over Transmission Fluid Leak

General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for several different Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac models as the vehicles’ transmissions may leak transmission fluid.

The problem: according to a GM filing with NHTSA, the start/stop accumulator endcap on affected vehicles may have missing or loose bolts.

The hazards: the filing indicates that missing or loose bolts on the start-stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission oil leak and may progress to a loss of propulsion, thereby increasing the risk of a crash. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of high heat or some other ignition source may increase the risk of a fire, as well.

Affected vehicles:

Affected parts: transmission, start/stop accumulator endcap.

Number of affected vehicles: 194,105

The fix: GM says it will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealership service center. The dealers will inspect the start-stop transmission accumulator and, if any bolts are missing, replace affected components free of charge.

Owners should: vehicle owners affected by this recall should wait for GM to contact them, at which point they will be instructed to make an appointment with their dealer’s service center. The recall is expected to begin on December 14th, 2020. GM owners can also search all recall actions or campaigns that may be active on their vehicle by punching their VIN into the dedicated GM Owner Center landing page.

  1. General Motors needs to be more careful now that Joe Biden is POTUS because jobs will be going to China as soon as he announces his new tax plan for the country and the shit will really hit the fan as jobs begin to disappear with factories move to China which causes a cascade effect to the entire country’s finances which means even under the best circumstances, the GDP growth will be one-third of what it is now and those unemployed will stay unemployed for years; Thanks Michigan and Wisconsin who will get the poverty they so deeply want and with open borders, the drug problem will intensify as it’s just a matter of time before the gangs in Mexico migrate to the United States.

    1. Scott, I have owned Toyotas, great cars/trucks but as it is, for me, they are TOY’s, last Toyotas I owns were in 1986, a Corolla and a P up, good vehicles but, not what I thought they would be, after those 2, I bought a Chevy S10, never had a single problem with it at all, same whit the Corsica LTZ, not once did they ever go back to the shop and, from that day forward, I simply buy Chevy’s and to be 1,000% honest, I just do not have any problems at all with them, all the trucks I have owned have gone over the 400,000 mark with only minor issues (water pump, starter, hoses, belt etc…), however, today, I find all cars are good/great, it comes down to preference of which brand you like, I own a 2019 ZR2, and when we off road, those TACO trucks are always our hold up, good truck but way over rated, In my line of business, I have learned to love toyotas, nissans, mits, etc… because they do break down and more often than you make them out to be and that is why I love them, cost almost twice as much to repair when they do.

  3. Scott Kilmer makes me laugh. He must have missed the headline from last week “Toyota recalls 5.84 million vehicles for fuel pump issue”.

  8. My mother has a 2013 terrain with the same problem is there anyway they’re going to have a recall on that year ???

    1. I believe it’s a stop/start issue. Which 2013 didn’t have.

  9. This issue affects only the models that have stop-start. This can be 6 speeds and 9 speeds. Realize that an automatic transmission needs hydraulic pressure to keep the planetary gear clutch packs engaged. When the engine dies at the stop light, the torque converter stops spinning and the hydraulic pump in the transmission quits. Therefore stop/start vehicles have a hydraulic accumulator (pressurized tank of trans fluid) that keeps the clutches engaged with the engine dead. When it auto restarts, the transmission is still in gear. Without this feature, there would be a delay and a bang every time you re-started. A leaky accumulator is not a good thing. All this complexity and starter/battery wear and tear for the Stop/Start function of dubious value. May save a few drops of fuel in stop/go city driving, but the main purpose is the EPA CAFE credit the automakers get so they can sell more full size trucks. EPA will only allow the dash mounted ‘Defeat’ switch to operate for each ignition on/off cycle. – Former Automotive Engineer

  10. Dealt with GM trucks for 25 years no way the 2009 and up will not make it to 100k without major repairs ie afm cams and lifters failures not to mention Dexron 6 atf evaporates because they run trans temps at 250 f.

  11. GM shouldn’t be selling used vehicles when they are fully aware of engine problems or oil leaks, the equinox went threw a law suet for this exact problem. This problem should have been fixed before it was resold. The unknowing buyer is now stuck with a car that has an oil consumption problem that the chevy dealer should have taken care of. It should never have been resold in that condition. It should have been put up for auction, instead it was sold to make more money.

  12. Anyone aware of a recall on a 2020 Chevy Suburban? My son in law is leaking a red fluid. Possible transmissions or PowerPoint steering? I am not finding any recalls. It wouldn’t be normal wear and tear on A one year old vehicle. Something’s wrong 😑
