Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Spark sales enabled the city car to continue as the best-selling model in its segment during the third quarter, outselling the Mitsubishi Mirage and Fiat 500, which has been discontinued in the U.S. market after the 2019 model year.

Sales Numbers - Mainstream City Cars - Q3 2020 - United States

TOTAL -9.26% 14,308 15,768 -13.68% 37,990 44,010

The Spark also dominated the segment share, accounting for 59 percent of the sales volume. Meanwhile, the Mirage held 41 percent while the Fiat 500 made up less than 1 percent. Most notably, the Spark was the only vehicle in the segment to grow sales volume and share on a year-over-year basis.

The mainstream city car segment contracted nearly 10 percent to 14,308 units during Q3 2020, meaning that Spark sales during the quarter significantly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

We attribute the increase in Spark sales during Q3 2020 to two factors:

  1. An attractive and desirable product with very little competition, and
  2. An improvement in “on the ground” inventory as a result of an influx of shipments from the GM Changwon plant in South Korea

The Q3 2020 results represents a significant improvement over the preceding quarter, which saw sales volume slip as a result of availability-related complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • There were 77 selling days for Q3 2020 and 76 selling days for Q3 2019
  • South Korea sales figures reflect actual vehicle registrations rather than wholesales

  1. Ahem, GM and Chevy are you paying attention? Don’t drop this car after 2022!! And for god-sake, don’t go off and re-name it. They need to work on getting this car into even more homes and bring new buyers into GM.

  2. Very little competition is an understatement. The last Fiat 500s sold in the US are MY 2019.

  3. Very funny spin and article. The spark increased over 20% because the other two competitors have been discontinued. While the Volkswagen beetle has sold literally millions our little Chevy spark can’t even sell 50,000 annualized over the year

    1. Ah, the Mitsubishi is not discontinued. Very much alive and sitting on dealer lots all over.

  4. By the way isn’t it GMs intention to stop selling all cars and only sell SUVs and electrics
