Artist Imagines A Modern-Day Second-Generation Chevy Camaro

The sixth-generation Chevy Camaro has a very modern, contemporary design that doesn’t draw too heavily from previous iterations of the muscle car. This is unlike the current Ford Mustang and especially the Dodge Challenger, which both feature an abundance of retro design cues that hark back to previous iterations of the vehicles.

What would the Chevy Camaro look like if it did draw from older versions of the coupe, though? Rendering artist Oscar V recently decided to fire up Photoshop and try his hand at designing a new Chevy Camaro that pulls inspiration from the second-generation of the well-known and long-running muscle car.

This rendering appears to be based on a late 1970s Chevy Camaro Z/28, however it is also wearing various parts from the fifth-generation Chevy Camaro ZL1, including the headlights, front fascia extension, grille, hood, wheels and badging. The second-gen Camaro inspiration remains heavy, though, with the vehicle retaining the classic glass T-top roofs, uniquely shaped domed rear window and prominent ducktail-style rear spoiler.

Oscar V actually went back to the drawing board to fix this design after receiving some constructive criticism from his Instagram followers. His first design, which is pictured above, featured fairly open and upright headlights and headlight lenses, which gave the rendering a bit of a surprised look. He then gave the headlight lenses a more slanted shape, making the Chevy Camaro’s face appear aggressive rather than exasperated.

We don’t think Chevy will be looking to the second-generation Camaro for inspiration for future iterations of the muscle coupe, but this rendering is a fun little experiment that gives us a rough idea of what such a project might look like if it ever did.       1. In my opinion: the 1970 1/2-1973’s HAD THE BEST arrow dynamics, The rear fin was copied too NASCAR. What killed it for the 2nd gen.’s: the 1/4″ thick body shell.

  4. There is an answer to a question no one asked.

    If and only if the Camaro is to survive it need to create a new gen that is all its own.

    The retro thing is dying as many of those who treasured the old cars are now old or gone.

    A new car should look like a Camaro but be all new in its own way. Much like the C8.

  5. Live to dream of a C8 Corvette getting an engine and transmission transplant from the C7 Corvette meaning the possibility of a 1,000 hp C8 Corvette matched to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

  6. Second gen 1970-1973 Camaro with rally sport uption is the all time prittiest Camaro ever when you add modern wheels. But I know GM is not like Dodge with his Challenger literations. Gm is to shy to deliver…

    1. The truth is times have changes.

      The original Challenger was a classic. Good lines good balance in the design. Today those designs translate poorly. You get a tall cat with a thick middle. While it may look the part of the original it is kind of like super model past her prime.

      The Camaro has some of that too. To meet crash standards the sites are high but they lowered the roof too keep it shorter.

      I agree the the early RS Camaro is a sweet car but with today’s crash standards it would never look the same. This is why they need a new direction for a new classic. Get a design that better fits today’s standards,

      Retro today is like Smokey and the Bandit 2. Ok but nothing near like the original.

  7. I do understand they need to meet crash standards. Gm can make the very same 2016-2020 Camaro body (frame) and just cosmetically change the face and rear end like it is a 1970 car, and even use the two little (split) bumper. Not to much science needed to do it. Just like gen6 vs gen5 but using different frames. Don’t we remember people confused and complained the cars were to similar ?

  9. Chevrolet has needed to reinvent the Camaro in the mold of the early 2nd gen for a while – and that time has long since passed.

    The incessant need to cling to or pay homage to the past has grown tired – look at the current C8 Corvette and the absolute, if not universal acceptance it has garnered since the very first images of it were leaked. It looks NOTHING like any drug-induced rendering of a 1st, 2nd or 3rd gen – AND EVERYONE IS FINE WITH THAT !!!

    I was definitely one that was crying out for Chevy to use the 2nd gen as inspiration for a new Camaro body style – but no longer – GM/Chevy, use your imaginations and come up with a new body style that respects the past – as the C8 does – but looks to the future – as the C8 does.

    Don’t let the Camaro become what the Mustang has – an ugly, long-nosed weathered brick of a car that bares it hind-end at the beautiful design its original designers imagined.

  12. As an owner of the second generation camaros, I thought the artist rendering of a new Camaro was neat and fresh. I miss my camaro very much. I don’t look for chevy to use the design tho.

  13. Love the Second Gen. Love the Sixth Gen, but not together as one. Second Gen F-bodies are some of the most attractive cars ever produced, but let’s not spoil their legacy. Modern muscle cars should look MODERN. You can’t go forward by looking back. Retro sucks!

  17. The ’70 1/2 split-bumper Z28 was iconic; a beautiful car. It certainly didn’t need what that above “artist” did to it. Most of these ‘rendering’ posts found on this site make the cars look like the “artist” was smoking crack.

  18. CHROME BUMPERS YOU GM DESIGNING IDIOTS!!! The 69’ Camaro rode a hell of a lot better than the new Camaro and YOU GET IN AND OUT OF IT MUCH EASIER!! Don’t you designers get it?? Why do you think these old muscle cars are going for such big money ?? It’s what people want! Your too worried about European designs Guess what WE ARE NOT IN EUROPE ANYMORE! We are in MERICA’ we like our chrome! And why in the hell did you put independent rear suspension on the 2021 Tahoe’s/GMC ??? As soon as someone toes a trailer and or any type of a load on the rear it’s going to wear the inside of the tires out! The solid axle has been around since the Dinosaurs
    BECAUSE ITS STRONGER AND HOLDS UP!

  20. Dodge hit a home run with the Challenger because they didn’t stray to far from the original. People want things that look like the good old days but offers a little more modern amenities. Looking at this car above I would not dare get within a hundred yards of it and the 70-73 camaro will always be my number one vehicle ever. GM really needs to wake up and listen to the people make cars people want to buy and never get rid of. That being said my second favorite car would be a 70s plum crazy purple Challenger I’ll never be able to own one so I did the next best thing I got a 2010 plum crazy purple Challenger and I will never get rid of it.

    1. You can’t look forward by constantly looking back. I don’t wish to slam the Challenger too heavily, physical style is purely subjective. However, the car is basically a two door full size Charger, big and heavy. It recalls when “road hugging bulk” ruled the day. The Challenger is a far more compromised car, aimed squarely at the consumer rather than the enthusiast. I’m not sure why some demand their muscle cars look like designs we have seen before. Camaro always was known for its drop dead good looks that evolved generation to generation. Second Gen to current are my favorite Camaros. I hope we never see a full retro Camaro, if we even see a seventh generation Camaro at all. I would rather the car die on it’s feet, rather than become an overweight rolling anachronism like the Challenger.

  21. GM did a recent Concept Rendering off of the 1985 I-ROC Z/28 Camaro and it looked great, if 2023 is going to be the last model year for this legend, that could be a good design influence to go out with.

  26. Im in the minority but the 7os camaros and the 80s IROC Zs are the two that get my vote. This right here doesnt correctly capture the 70s camaro badassedness. You need more influence of say the yellow 70s model in the transformers movie!! This rendering is malfunctory and contorted weird, just doesnt have that innate aesthetic instant design aspect that is new with energy but at the same time ON POINT. When you look at this rendering its like some community college design class did it instead of a professional . They should do the re-iteration , but dont do such a half assed job as this!!!
