General Motors completely overhauled its full-size SUV lineup for the 2021 model year, with models like the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, and GMC Yukon all receiving a ground-up re-engineering and redesign. No surprise then that the latest next-generation SUVs are in high demand, with the all-new Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, and GMC Yukon / Yukon XL gaining three percentage points in retail segment share since their launch in Q2 of 2020.
The all-new SUVs’ impressive sales performance was announced recently in GM’s Q3 2020 earnings report, and is based on the automaker’s analysis of J.D. Power data.
General Motors also recently announced that its large pickup truck models secured a lead in retail market share during the third quarter with a 1.7-percent gain in share, as GM Authority reported on last week.
The impressive sales performance bodes well for the automaker, as its full-size SUV and truck lines are the most profitable GM products on offer, accounting for the lion’s share of revenues and profits.

Placed alongside the rest of the mainstream full-size SUV models, we find that the GM SUVs hold the leading market share, with 44,742 units of 70,646 units total.
It’s also worth noting that sales of the GM models were down as a result of low inventory following the generation changeover. This is normal for a new model launch, as once production of the outgoing model is halted, the production facility must be retooled and prepped for production of the new model. As such, inventory is depleted and sales drop. Once production of the new model begins, there is a ramp-up period with a gradual rollout with several difference production phases.
It typically takes a full year from the discontinuation of the previous generation for the new model to get up to speed. However, once that happens with the all-new Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, and GMC Yukon, we expect sales to improve substantially, only limited by the capacity at General Motors’ Arlington plant in Texas.

The content of both the Tahoe and Yukon are so high especially once they get supercruise. Why choose a lower trimmed Luxury branded SUV. That is the question a lot of buyers will be asking themselves. Also, now that a diesel model is offered GM could see buyers coming from the German models that offered diesels.
and while GM struggles to increase the dealer inventory of those vehicles, now they announced that GM will be shipping the large SUV’s to China for sale….how about getting the inventory in the US stabilized first before looking to other markets
So if it is SO different, what IS different? Engine? Drive train? Available tow packages?? I thought I was following a Tahoe the other day and it had NO rear differential. Was I seeing things? What a useless article, all it mentions is production numbers…
IRS in rear is new. All new body structure and body architecture. The front body structure is now welded on, all bolt on panels are aluminum . The first all new architecture since the GMT800 in 1999. Both the GMT900 and K2 architecture were refreshes of the GMT800, with significant upgrades but the same basic architecture.
