Over the last few weeks, General Motors has carried out a major and aggressive renewal of its product portfolio in order to its sales leadership in Colombia. After the recent introduction of the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tracker and the refreshed 2021 Chevrolet Colorado in the South American country, the company has just launched the 2021 Chevrolet Joy as its new entry-level model in the Colombian market.
First released late last year in Brazil, the 2021 Chevrolet Joy is basically a rebranded and slightly modified first-generation Chevrolet Onix, now positioned as an entry-level vehicle. Manufactured in the Brazilian plant of São Caetano do Sul, the 2021 Joy arrives in Colombia to democratize access to the Chevrolet brand, with family-friendly interior space and low maintenance costs.
“The new Chevrolet Joy is among the vehicles in the General Motors portfolio that present the best value,” said Commercial Director of GM Colombia, Raúl Mier, in a press release. “By offering outstanding features of space, design, comfort and performance, it becomes a great alternative for Colombian families seeking to move around safely with a new car at a very good price,” he added.
The 2021 Chevrolet Joy lineup consists of one trim level in two body styles, including a five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan. Both versions offer the best value in the Colombian market with features such as air conditioning, a trip computer, an audio system, cloth upholstery, two airbags, anti-lock brakes and 15-inch wheels.
Unlike the variant for the Brazilian market, the 2021 Chevrolet Joy is offered in Colombia with a naturally aspirated, 1.4L four-cylinder engine that develops 98 horsepower and 93 pound-feet of torque, matched exclusively to a five-speed manual transmission. In the first-generation Onix, this powertrain proved to perform well and copes nicely with the country’s topography.
The 2021 Chevrolet Joy is now on sale in the Colombian market, where it is offered with a total of six paint colors: Metallic Black, Mediterranean Blue, Steel Gray, Galaxy White, Chili Red and Sable Silver. Notably, the Joy is still part of the Onix family, just like in Brazil and Argentina. Undoubtedly, the marketing strategy will make the Chevrolet Onix consolidate its position as the best-selling vehicle in Colombia and all of South America.
Positioned as the most-affordable subcompact vehicle in the country, the suggested prices for the two versions of the 2021 Chevrolet Joy in Colombia are as follows:
- 2021 Joy Hatchback: 39,990,000 COP (about $10,990 USD at the current exchange rate)
- 2021 Joy Sedan: 40,990,000 COP ($11,250 USD)

98 horses out of 1.4 liters without a turbo? Does this mean all the stuff that makes little engines go fast — variable valve timing, variable length intake runners, etc. — has gone mainstream? That’s 20-30 horses more than I would expect.
Those specs are exactly the same as the Spark engine that’s got to be over five years old now.
Certainly nothing exciting.
Buddy this first-gen Onix engine is at least 20 years old. GM Brazil did a good job even with few resources sent by the headquarters in the 2000’s, when Chevy fell to third/fourth in the brazilian market.
Ok, so it’s even older. I’m just pointing out that 1.4L Spark has had 98hp also since 2016 apparently, and nobody is surprised by that massive amount of power.
A ’96 Ford Escort GT was making 127 hp with similar displacement, it’s still decent for a car in this class.
Looks like a nice car, the price is right, now why is it not in the good old U S A and if it was, why then, would it cost 20 to 23 thousands of dollars here.
It looks pretty small to me. I doubt, if they could sell it, they’d be asking that much.
Anyway, I thought they were done selling cars here?
Hay GM, it seems you have sufficient capital to introduce new models in other countries. How about a Malibu Wagon in the USA? The same car would also sell well in Europe, where they love Wagons.
Hay mark, Chevy is out of Europe. i guess you are not woke.
It’s possible they will cancel the Malibu in a couple more years. No way would they introduce a wagon nobody would buy, unless you mean a CUV which they certainly don’t need.
