Will The 2022 GMC Sierra Ditch The Column Shifter?

Just last week, GM Authority brought you photos of the updated interior in the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra. Although the prototype model featured in those photos was covered in heavy camouflage, we couldn’t help but notice one particularly noteworthy omission – no column-mounted shifter.

As just about any fan of General Motors pickups will tell you, this is actually quite a substantial change compared to previous model years. In fact, using a stalk mounted to the steering column to shift gears has been a hallmark feature of most GM trucks for decades now. Nevertheless, the prototype 2022 GMC Sierra seen in the most recent spy photos seems to indicate that the column-mounted shifter is on the way out with the forthcoming model refresh.

While the 2022 GMC Sierra is slated to come with a few nips and tucks for the exterior design, the heaviest revisions will take place inside the cabin. With that in mind, it’s very likely that the new pickup will instead adopt a new push-button shifter similar to that of the latest next-generation 2021 GMC Yukon full-size SUV.

2021 GMC Yukon pictured here.

Further details include a new steering wheel, which appears to have a row of silver or shiny buttons added to the left-hand side. What’s more, it looks as though the steering wheel has a Super Cruise indicator added along the top of the rim, which suggests that the 2022 GMC Sierra will offer semi-autonomous self-driving capabilities and features.

The model featured here also doesn’t have a flat-panel infotainment screen mounted on the dash, but rather appears to come with a screen integrated into the center stack.

However, the big question here is about the shifter. Which leads us to ask – what would you prefer to see in the 2022 GMC Sierra? Should the pickup stick with the column-mounted stalk, or is a button-activated shifter a better choice? 1. It will not happen until GMC can catch up with with Ford’s average transaction price. The Detroit Free press just did a study on the upper trim trucks and found that on average people where paying 4k more Ford trucks than GM trucks. Even worse, people are now willing to pay more for Ram trucks than GM trucks. Visit the website, as a matter of fact the Detroit Free Press did another article because the Ford average transaction price went up even more. People are not falling for it anymore, and they know that Ford and Ram blows GM away luxury and technology wise. Some have a hard time saying GMC is better than Chevy.

          Reply
          1. That’s because Ford only sells Ford where GM sells Chevy/GMC , Ram still gives away trucks. I see no proof you’re getting recent ATPs. For technology Ford is troubled with its electronics while Ram is selling a 2002 Dodge with different transmission and sheetmetal.

            1. Splitting them helps GMC have a higher ATP since Chevy sells cheaper. Putting them together would lower the ATP. Next, who buys a luxury vehicle with reliability being top priority? That’s the point of a luxury vehicle, the more it has the more to go wrong. Last GM was called out this year for offering unusually deep discounts in the first quarter. This very website covered the high discounts GM offered. Go check the archives. We can no longer deny these things. It’s available for everyone to read.

” Your point?. If people want to pay for something that doesn’t say “Chevrolet” so be it.

“Next, who buys a luxury vehicle with reliability being top priority? That’s the point of a luxury vehicle, the more it has the more to go wrong. ”

                Tell this to Lexus.

“Last GM was called out this year for offering unusually deep discounts in the first quarter. ”

So was the other 2, let’s not act like nobody does it.

                1. My point is you brought those things up and I showed you that it doesn’t change anything I said earlier. Any vehicle has issues. The point is a base Toyota has better reliability than a fully loaded Lexus. No, Ford did not offer unusually deep discounts in the first quarter. All you have to do is check the GM Authority and Ford Authority archives to see who did what. Also, the GM ceo was confronted by the automotive media about it and she deflected. Google search “Ford grows truck dominance by Detroit free press “. It covers Ford’s record setting transaction price. Better yet, all we have to do is look at the Raptor. They sold at or above sticker prices for years. No other truck did that. If you look up the history of luxury truck trims you will see that Ford started it way back in the 80’s with the Eddie Bauer lineup. GM saw how successful it was and started the Denali lineup. Ford introduced the Harley Davidson and King Ranch F150 before the Sierra Denali and showed the auto industry that people wanted luxury pickup trucks. Now everyone wants in. One of the main reasons Ford has a higher transaction price because people have known for years that Ford has offered high end features on their trucks. You can’t deny these things and GM should be tired of playing catchup.

                  Reply
                  1. So GM is supposed to copy Ford now for trucks?. Did not Ford had to play catch up on the Midsize trucks?, believe it or not luxury items been available on pickups since the 60s, Ford may have started “package deals” but it wasn’t luxury.

Ford always offers deep incentives on F-Series quarterly to get rid of the XLTs and such, like GM for a Denali you’ll have to pay if you want a Raptor or Platinum.

As said GMC have it for luxury trucks, Ford just has Raptor which is a expensive sport truck and nobody buys Platinums.

                    Reply
                    1. Please get back on the subject of full size luxury trim trucks.

No, XLT has nothing to do with upper luxury trims. Besides, the articles by the Detroit free press show that Ford is also the stingiest with discounts.

Next, don’t try it, no one is paying sticker for a Denali like people were paying for the Raptor.

No one buys Platinums? This comment shows willful ignorance and deep denial. Good day sir

    2. The automotive engineers thought about that. Plenty of accidents in lever type shifters where somebody misses the notch and the car backs away. NHTSA required on-dash position indicators, and some companies did gated shifters in the 2000’s because of that.

Electronic shifters were introduced en masse in a large part to allow integration of automatic safety features, such as going to park when the driver’s door opens.

    3. Have a 2019 Terrain – has a row of pull shift tabs on bottom of center stack. Pain in the butt. Manual set and up/down all the way to the right of this row. Bigger pain in the butt. Wife liked the Terrain so we leased it, but we decided we would never again get a vehicle with this type of transmission selector. (“Possible” new 2022 Sierra selector is at left of upper stack is immediately adjacent to steering wheel, with manual set and up/down at bottom position, so this setup at least looks to be handier than the Terrain.)

Would still prefer a console stick shifter with paddles on steering wheel – had a 2016 Ford Edge and loved that feature, but too many mechanical issues/problems convinced us to get away from Ford.

I disagree with your statement about the column shifter though, that is one of the highlights of the truck

  5. Column shifter is way better. More ergonomic, less in the way. Regardless, on the higher trims it’s got to go. Coolness is as important as function these days, must be a push-button, no not even a stick shifter like on the fords or a dial on the ram, must be a full blown button design like the suburban or the corvette.

My biggest fear is the push/pull buttons will look tacky, especially on the Denali trim. I hope they dress them up accordingly. Functionally I think it works great. I have no problem using them on my 2018 Terrain.

  12. As a BMW SUV owner considering the Sierra as my first truck, I am attracted to GMC brand trucks for their professional-grade label. GMC still has work to do in many interior areas but replacing the column shifter with push buttons is not one them. RAM trucks, with a dial shifter, currently pack in the latest technology going beyond GMC’s offering, yet RAM lacks the level of appeal GMC commands. By all means GMC should improve the Sierra’s column shifter, but don’t remove it on your trucks. It’s a nonstarter for me and goes against a brand and image decades in the making. The next-generation Sierra should be a refinement of a modern classic rather than turning a truck into an SUV.

What’s even more shameful is that the comment section actually underlines misspellings in red, yet you chose to ignore it. That is just plain laziness.

No way someone would pay $82k for a 1500 Sierra unless it had a special customization package and you were a sucker to pay full price.

Also, you should go back to the dealer so they can show you how to use the adaptive cruise since you can’t figure it out on your own and can’t read the manual.

They need to focus on attracting new buyers, not just existing truck owners. If I had a similar deal, I would’ve gotten a Ram over it with no hesitation.. It’s leaps and bounds better in the interior and exterior. I’m glad it’s only a lease so hopefully I can trade for an updated ’22.

  20. I’m happy with the column shifter in my 2016 GMC SLT, especially compared to the electronic console mounted shifter in my wife’s XT5. I don’t care for how the electronic shifters function. Trucks, SUV’s and CUV’s are supposed to be utility vehicles, not make believe sports cars. I much prefer having the large open storage compartment in my console, for things I regularly need easy access to (like business cards, sunglasses and nowadays, face masks), than a shifter in the console.

I buy loaded trucks (leather, sunroof, heated seats and steering wheel, etc), but I still want them to be functional. To me, a console mounted shifter of any type, isn’t functional in a truck. While I’d prefer a column mounted shifter, given the choice between dash mounted buttons, or a console mounted shifter, I’ll take the buttons.

I love my 2016, but was planning to replace it with an updated 2021. Now I’m anxiously waiting for the strike and pandemic delayed new interiors in the 2022’s.

  23. First off – It’s not a “push button shift”, it’s a “pull tab shift” and it sucks to use. I will not buy a vehicle with this obnoxious shifting device. I’ve had it in several GM rental cars over the last year and I can’t understand why GM thinks this is the future. An actual “push button shift” would be a huge improvement. The column shift is also archaic and I’d strongly prefer a counsel shift as it frees up real estate on the dash and is (to me) more intuitive to use. An electronic counsel shift can be space efficient and also lends itself well to manually shifting.

For those in the snow belt on a zero degree morning, the push button is more of a touch sensor button, and with gloves on it maybe difficult to hit the right button and get a response. A dial select like the Ram seems more practical. I still prefer the stalk. I can go to manual mode with a simple one click of the shifter, with a button you’ll need to look down and on a bumpy road surface it be almost impossible to get the right button. Ever try to tap the infotainment screen while bouncing around?

If you look at the picture, on the bottom of the push button selector show – L +. That is for manual or 4 wheel drive. It will require you to bend over and reach while driving. With a column shift, you just look ahead.

Call me old school but I don’t trust the electronic buttons or hockey puck like Ram uses, that’s just something else to go wrong that you have to go back to the dealer and pay $125/hr labor rates after it’s out of warranty. I’ll stick with the mechanical linkage thank you. That’s the same thing with the screen, that’s more of a distraction while driving, because you have to take your eyes off the road to use the screen.

    1. The newer transmissions are totally electronic and have NO mechanical connection. I mean the column shifter may make you feel better but at this point it has become nothing more than an electrical switch. I have come to much prefer the hockey puck in my Ram to a column shift.

    2. There is no mechanical connection from the column shifter to the transmission.

  29. I totally agree with push button selection, since the present electronic transmissions do all the work and only need the “D” setting (the driver never shifts at all). Many new vehicles have no mechanical shifters, just buttons, knobs, and rotary selectors that replace these vestigial items from the past centuries. Even new EVs never need this since the electric motor runs at all speeds, and reverses direction in “R”. The new methods also save space, and assembly costs, and eliminate linkages. It is a real hassle to replace a broken shifter cable (I did it once)!

If you do a push button mechanism on the dash, so be it, but by all means, how could anyone with even just a “small” brain that had anything to do with ergonomics design in this day and age come up with the stupitity to not place the manual tap shift buttons somewhere on the steering wheel or some other convenient spot where you likely have your hand(s) placed while driving. Even on a manual stick shift you naturally often had your right hand resting on the shifter (it was natural or by instinct). I love the new GM SUVs but the placement of the manual tap shift buttons on the dash is not what I call Intelligent Design. At least with the column shifter I can rest my elbow on the armrest or center console and my right hand on the column shifter with the tap shift Right There for thumb use, naturally & without thinking, now I have to take my hand off the steering wheel and make a concious effort to “see” the tiny button on the dash #&*#@ horible design on an $80,000 vehicle…so, GM, please change it on the SUVs and don’t do it on your trucks!!!

When towing in the manual mode, the shift buttons on the column shifter are intuitive and where they should be. One can manually shift the tranny without taking your eyes off the road.

Assuming that tow/haul and manual mode will continue to be part of the Allison package, the shift buttons will need to be somewhere other than on the dash.

One can only hope that some of the many “new” buttons that are seen on the steering wheel are shift, tow/haul etc. Putting these on the dash would seem unsafe to me.

If you like COOL and STYLE buy a “Sports Car. GM in my opinion makes the BEST LOOKING trucks and the Duramax / Allison cannot be beat for quality. If you think about it, Ford’s best diesel was the 7.3 which was discontinued in 2002. Since then they keep trying unsuccessfully to keep up with the Duramax. The Dodge has a “Fork Lift” Engine that was designed for stationary “Powerplants”! that is why it destroys the front end of their pick up’s as as it is TOO heavy.
I would much rather have a dependable truck that works than all the frills and useless woodgrain. I am looking forward to my 2021 GMC SLT Dually. I drove the Ford and Dodge and they don’t come close to GM for style and comfort. I have been a GMC buyer since the 70’s.

I just hope that they update the 2022 as my 2020 looks like something from 2015 on the inside. 50. After 6 Silverados over 20 years I bought a F150 2018 model year, Platinum trim. MUCH prefer the console shifter as I live in the mountains and like to downshift for engine braking. The 3.5 duel turbo doesn’t get more than 2-3 better mpg that a GM 5.3V8, but the torque is astonishing. My issue with the Ford is all the safety related recalls. Each safety recall was an issue on my truck. 6 Chevy’s didn’t have the total issues that my Ford has had. Not okay on a $68K automobile. Hoping to go back to GM product, but they hafta compete on tech and cabin features. Otherwise will go with new Ford end of year

  51. Column shifter. Leave the hockey pucks and push buttons for the metro boys. They like to be different, just because. Nuff said.

  52. Keep the column shifter. More intuitive and safer. Don’t need to take eyes off road. Push buttons are too far to reach when on dash and will lead to many mistakes.

  53. Push Button Shifters: There is an elephant in the room that most folks may not realize. Understand the difference between electronically controlled transmissions with computer boxes (been around for years) and the latest electronic ‘shift by wire’ transmissions with push button shifting. There is no shift cable. The manufacturers have engineered the system so that to pull the parking pawl out of park requires hydraulic pressure. The engine MUST be running to turn the torque converter to run the hydraulic pump in the transmission to supply the pressure.

If your engine is dead, even with a good battery, the drive wheels are locked. The only way to move the vehicle is to pick it up so the drive wheels are off the ground. Better hope your dead engine vehicle isn’t blocking your other vehicle in the driveway. If this doesn’t bother you, go ahead and buy one. I’m a retired engineer from an automaker and fought this dilemma. I lost, the fix was over ruled because of the cost/benefit ratio.

  55. Keep the column shifter… there is enough other distractions while driving… don’t need this added distraction to locate a button to change gears.

How about instead of spending money to get away from a column shifter, how about spend that money to develop a RCSB Silverado Trail Boss with a 6.2L/10 speed option?

  59. The column shift on my 2020 Sierra X31 doesn’t bother me as much as the horrible “tilt” steering wheel, although I would welcome a console shift.
Between my wife and I, our other two vehicles both have console shift, and it does occasionally, cause me to reach in the wrong direction.

    1. Yeah, I have the same, it does suck, almost unusable. I think they do that so next time you upgrade to the Denali, electric tilt

  60. As the discussion of the shift lever location continues, I want to add something for another thread.
The LED reflector headlights on the 2020 model are really cool, but don’t perform as well as the hope. Straight ahead, pretty good. Off to the side, especially when turning, pretty poor.
I hope that GM or an aftermarket group can create an affordable solution.

  61. According to today’s post and photos, it looks like GM is going with the “Pushbutton’s” rather than column for 2022. Sure glad I ordered my 2021 as I, like many others prefer the old reliable column shifter. I test drove a 2020 SLT 3500 but could NOT find the “Tow Haul” button. It was NOT at the end of the shifter. Can somebody tell me where it has been relocated to. My 2021 won’t be in until February and I am curious. Thanks.

    1. It’s on a dial at the top left of the instrument panel. Turn one direction for Tow/Haul mode and turn the opposite direction to select drive mode.

  66. If GM does away with the column shift i will not be buying one. They already screwed up on the new design 1500 silverado. If they do a push button, then there going to suffer the consequences
Look what ford has done. . They offer console and column. Go figure. Thats why there number#1in truck sales. Truck buyers r different then SUV buyer. They cannot be that stupid, can they?

  67. GM should offer both column/push button AND a console stick shift gear lever. The rotary knob is gimmicky looking and knob nor push button doesn’t allow driver to use console gear shift as handhold during off-roading. This whole thing surprises me actually. Ford has it figured out.

  68. The Latest news that I have heard is that if you want to see the 2022 Sierra Dashboard look at the 2021 Tahoe. It is suppose to be the same along with the interior of the cab. Push Button Shifter Included! It is actually VERY Nice for a “TAHOE” or “SUBURBAN” but in my humble opinion NOT for a pick up. Glad I bought my 2021 SLT which is on its way here.
