What Is The GM Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle Program?

When shopping for a new vehicle, consumers have the option of looking for a brand new car, truck or SUV, or turning to the second-hand market. General Motors offers car shoppers a third option that provides a middle ground between the two with its GM Certified Pre-Owned vehicle program, but many consumers may not be aware of what it really means for a used GM vehicle to have “certified pre-owned” status.

Put simply, vehicles that fall under the GM Certified Pre-Owned vehicle program have been confirmed by the automaker as being in good cosmetic and mechanical order. Additionally, the vehicle must adhere to the following standards before it is permitted to be sold as an official GM Certified Pre-Owned product:

  • Must be a Chevrolet, Buick or GMC
  • Must be less than 6 model years old
  • Must have a maximum of 75,000 vehicle miles
  • Must have a clean vehicle title
  • Must have passed GM’s own 172-Point Vehicle Inspection

Crucially, all vehicles classified as GM Certified Pre-Owned come with a six-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 12-month/12,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. Roadside assistance from Allstate is also complimentary during the limited powertrain warranty period, along with courtesy transportation should the vehicle break down. GM also throws in a one-month free trial for OnStar and SiriusXM satellite radio on certified pre-owned vehicle purchases, along with 3GB/one month of 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot data – whichever comes first.

Another benefit of buying from the GM Certified Pre-Owned program is that the manufacturer requires dealers to complete all safety recalls that may be active on any vehicle sold through the program. This, in addition to the 172-point inspection, gives the buyer peace of mind that the vehicle they are getting is safe for them, their family and their friends to travel in. The program also allows the buyer to exchange the vehicle for another GM Certified Pre-Owned model after three days or 150 miles if they decide they want a different one.

Lastly, the GM Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle program allows the buyer to enroll in the My GM Rewards program and gives them 5,000 My GM Rewards points. These points can then be used towards official GM and partner accessories, eligible dealer service and more.

Those interested in buying a certified pre-owned GM vehicle can also use the automaker’s dedicated web portal to search for vehicles being sold through the program. The website will allow users to search GM Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle stock based on a distance radius ranging from 50 miles to 2,000 miles.

It’s worth noting that Cadillac vehicles are not part of the GM Certified Pre-Owned program and that the luxury brand has its own separate albeit similar system for selling certified used vehicles.

Just make sure you purchase a 100,000 electronics warranty, the drivetrain warranty does not cover them.

Yes the same applies to a new vehicle warranty, the 5 year 60,000 mile power train warranty only covers the mechanical parts, none of the electronic controls, computers, or sensors are covered. If they have to pull you transmission to replace a $30 sensor it’ll cost you sever hundred dollars or more for that $30 part. That’s why they don’t hesitate to warranty the mechanical parts, very little goes wrong with those parts, but electronics, I’ve seen those parts bad right out of the box.

“Certified Pre-Owned” 172-item check list. What assures the checks are actually done? Is the previous usage stated? By that, I mean, was it owned by a company whose traveling salesman used it? Private party? Was it a rental that had the ever-lovin’ snot beat out of it by 120 different drivers?

Do you automatically get a loaner vehicle on a certified vehicle that needs work done?

We have a 2019 GMC Canyon purchased as a GM CPO vehicle. The truck had a broken exhaust manifold bolt which was repaired by the dealer, but it was not covered under the 12/12000 bumper-to-bumper warranty (???).
