After months of hype and a decade on the shelf, the Hummer nameplate has returned. General Motors just unveiled the new GMC Hummer EV during a livestream debut event, pulling the sheets on a high-tech, high-powered, and highly capable supertruck.
Outside, the new GMC Hummer EV takes styling cues from its predecessors with a wide, horizontal fascia that reveals the Hummer nameplate in script between the headlamps when illuminated. The stance is tall and wide, with steel underbody armor located around the battery pack for aggressive off-roading strength.
The profile reveals a four-door cab with a short rear bed, while 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires make the traction.
Under the skin is GM’s new EV-dedicated BT1 architecture, which cradles the automaker’s latest Ultium lithium-ion battery technology and Ultium Drive motor technology. Customers can choose from several different powertrains, including a dual-motor and triple-motor setup. The range-topping three-motor model produces over 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque, propelling the GMC Hummer EV to 60 mph in just three seconds. Lower in the lineup, output levels include 625-horsepower and 800-horsepower models.
The new GMC Hummer EV is quick on pavement, but it’s also quite capable off-road, with a long list of features to help it conquer just about any terrain, such as Crabwalk Mode with the new four-wheel steering system, and adaptive air suspension. The new Hummer also features removable roof panels and an Open Air Infinity Roof.
Inside the cabin, the GMC Hummer EV comes with a 12.3-inch diagonal digital instrument cluster and 13.4-inch digital infotainment screen. The GM Super Cruise driver assist system is also available.
Production is slated for the GM Factory Zero facility, formerly known as GM Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant in Michigan, with the first customer-bound units hitting dealers in the fall of 2021 for the 2022 model year. Pricing for the 250-mile, two-motor Hummer EV2 starts at $79,995, while the two-motor, 300-mile Hummer EV2X starts at $89,995. The three-motor, 300-mile Hummer EV3X starts at $99,995. Finally, the limited-edition Hummer EV Edition 1 starts at $112,595, and comes with three motors and 350 miles of range. Reservations are open now for just $100.
