The upcoming 2022 GMC Sierra is set to usher in a mid-cycle enhancement (or MCE, otherwise known as a refresh) that will include a few nips and tucks to the exterior, as well as heavy revisions to the cabin. Now, we have new photos of the 2022 GMC Sierra Denali interior as seen in the following prototype model.
As we can see, these latest spy photos reveal a camo-clad cabin, preventing us from making out exactly what the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra’s interior will look like. That said, it does appear as though the pickup does not have a column-mounted shifter, suggesting that it has been moved to a push-button setup similar to other GMC products.
Further more, it looks as though the steering wheel on this 2022 GMC Sierra prototype is new, with a row of silver or shiny buttons placed on the lefthand side. There’s also a Super Cruise indicator along the top of the rim, which means semi-autonomous drive capabilities.
Despite the heavy padding, we also also tell that this prototype doesn’t have a flat-panel infotainment screen mounted on top of the dash as seen on the all-new 2021 GMC Yukon SLE, SLT, and AT4 trim levels, as opposed to the integrated center screen seen on the 2021 GMC Yukon Denali. As such, the photos lead us to believe that the 2022 GMC Sierra may offer two different interior layouts in the same vein as the 2021 GMC Yukon, with the Denali equipped with a unique layout and integrated screen, and the lower trims equipped with a pop-up screen.
As a reminder, the GMC Sierra got a complete overhaul for the 2019 model year, but some critics have voiced their opinion that new truck’s cabin was not competitive in the segment. Perhaps the revised cabin in the 2022 GMC Sierra will silence those critics one and for all.

I’m gonna guess that the steering wheel is a prototype pulled from Cadillac for testing purposes.
I wonder if they are simply using a parts bin Cadillac Steering wheel for testing purposes only. That steering wheel looks an awful lot like an XT5 steering wheel.
Carmakers don’t have that many steering wheels anyway. The production model will probably be the same with the trim changed. The steering wheel is safety critical because you don’t want parts coming off of it while you’re driving, and it’s critical in crash dynamics. Both mean a ton of expensive testing and validation.
GMC needs to provide their Escalade leather interior on their high end models, as they are charging near Escslade prices, the leather has been sub par.
I could be wrong but is that an Escalade Steering Wheel with Super Cruise I see?
That’s the awful XT6 steering wheel with Super Cruise.
As soon as it’s available for order I’ll be going with a Chev RST or LTZ depending how pricing comes.in once I’ve got it optioned how I want.
Brown or dark blue ext
Tan/brown leather with front center console

Likely the 5.3 especially if they pair with 10spd, maybe 3.0d
Then some packages
With the Ram again out selling the Silverado this past quarter, GM can’t get these updated interiors onto market fast enough.
Is the e-stop a new safety feature?
Still waiting for a fancy regular cab from GM. Perhaps they will do it with the refreshed models. Not everyone needs to drive bus.
Colin, if I we’re you, go look at a black/red Silverado WT 4×4 with the appearance and convenience packages. The new cabs are actually pretty slick in person, lacking in bells, but slick. Then buy a good 3k set of rims with performance tires. Get one with the 5.3 and you will have more power than you can put down in that lightweight SOG.
Steven, your basically saying to buy a WT and dress it up… only problem with that is, the “dresses” that 1 can buy under a WT trim are hand me down seconds. The fancy dresses you can only get with the higher trim levels.
Also, I entirely disagree that the new lower trims will get the “iPad” look. Thats not going to fly with any truck buyer; he’ll, it doesn’t fly in most luxury car buyers besides nerdy carguywannabees who buy Tesla’s because it’s cool. More likely they will keep the current dash, and upgrade the gaudy glove box and doors for the SLE and Chevy LT trims and possibly add the push button drive selector. They will change the center consol in both bench and bucket seat configurations as that was another eyesore, and make under seat storage for the buckets seats standard on the SLE and LT trims. For LT and base trims I would prefere a column shifter.
Interiors are not the issue. The current one is fine. Someone needs to do something about the freakishly large chrome grille that seems to grow larger and more hideous with each refresh. A monochrome option which allows body color grille and bumpers should be available on all models not just 4×4.
I am not buying a current gen Silverado/ Sierra because the interior is from the 90s and low quality plastic everywhere. Yes, the interior is an issue.
I disagree with most of these comments. Did GMC Sierra and it’s front end are arguably the most stunning beautiful truck on the market. I say arguably because I just begun to lease on a new 2020 Silverado LTZ in my opinion it’s equally stunning in appearance. Let It be noted that I work for Ford at the F-150 assembly plant as a dyno operator here in Dearborn Michigan, so my opinion is unbiased. Ford and Chevy are making some of the most beautiful most productive high quality trucks on the market… Which also goes with the ever raising price tags of this vehicle segment. The only downside is of course the interior. That being said it doesn’t matter to me as much as the GM twins are being so ridiculed about- it’s an issue, but it didn’t force me to wait until they refreshed the vehicle’s interior. I myself ordered my 2020 LTZ nearly loaded with nearly every available option from the 6.2L engine to the neatly $1,000 triple white paint job. The interior is not as glitzy as the newer Rams out there, but it’s still very beautiful and extremely functional. The rest of the vehicle drives like a luxury car not much like a truck at all- but the truck and it’s advantages are there when I need them. In addition, in my unbiased opinion, dyno testing the new 2021 Ford F-150 there wasn’t enough wow factor to make me wait and lease or buy one in the spring- to me it’s basically a carryover from the 2020 model with a few design tweaks. Cost comparison between Ford and Chevy of their half tons were another concern. When I inquired about a new F-150 at a Ford dealership, the cost of leasing a comparable half ton pickup from ford was roughly $300 more per month than the chevy I took delivery of. I was dumbfounded, the dealer basically verbally admitted that “Ford upticks retail cost sometimes $5000 on some trucks because they know they’re going to sell them” that’s pretty cocky if you ask me, even coming from my Ford employee. Ford maybe the standard and pickup trucks, but the other guys especially the GM LT twins are catching up fast. This is my second GM truck in a row, and I don’t see that string breaking anytime soon.
If you work for Ford you would have been able to use one of their plans that allows you to buy a Ford vehicle significantly under dealer cost.
How is that relevant?
I have the 2019 SLT crew cab x31. I love the truck. I don’t understand the knocks on the interior. Compared mine to a f150 lariat and the GMC is way nicer. The Ram may have a better interior but the external looks aren’t that great. To me the Ram looks like a smaller SUV on the outside front. I’ll trust the 5.3l V8 over a hemi any day when it comes to towing. I get a lot of compliments on this truck. Hopefully they don’t change too much externally because that is a huge strength over the f150 and Ram. And yes, the tailgate is pretty awesome and gets used all the time!
There is just a lot of cost cutting on the T1xx trucks over the K2xx. I think the T1xx has the potential to be better, but the blank buttons, no power passenger seat in comparable trims vs the K2xx, cheaper materials over the k2xx, shallow much less functional center console. It’s like they said, yup, we’ll give you the push button start, rear heat vents and optional higher res screen, but we are going to take this this and this out because we won’t spend more money, just spend it differently.
I’d rate interiors as K2xx>T1xx>F150. Unless you get a top trim F150, they just suck inside.
The SLT is also the second highest trim level Sierra and the Lariat is only the mid level trim for the F150 so not exactly comparing apples to apples there. Compare the SLT to an Fl50 Platinum and the Denali to a F150 limited and you’ll be making a fair comparison.
yet pricewise the SLT and Lariat are the same, and technically the Denali is at the same price point as a king ranch. You have to go to a Denali ultimate carbon pro package to get the GMC priced at the same point as a Ram or Ford Limited Trim, and at that point while the interior of the GMC is a bit lacking against the other two, the Truck itself is WAY more advanced. Kevlar impenetrable bed, active dampening Shocks, 6.2 engine and 10 speed way outperform the Ram, and while the new 2021 F150 will have the new 3.5 with 400HP, 500Ft lbs of torque and the same transmission as the denali, It is not yet on the market, and this “updated” Silverado/sierra could feature some new engine tech. If they add the tri-power tech from the 2.7 turbo, I.E the variable camshaft feature, they could add a hot cam profile more like the updated corvette engine, and the massive hood allows lots of room for the 6.2 to have bigger intake manifolds. They could smack down ford with 455 hp and 470Tq with minimal changes to the engine itself.
Thank goodness GMC is making more luxury trucks, the interior should be updated especially if we’re paying 80k for it
I wonder what kind of suv that is they disguised it so well.
Do SOMETHING about butt burning drivers seat. I cannot go 60 miles without pulling over for a break.
Are they significantly hotter then the 2014-2018 seats? I’ve had several of those trucks and they can’t hold a candle to the 2007-2013 seat heaters, which on the highest setting would get uncomfortably hot after a while (which I preferred).
I had a 2013 Silverado that would literally run you out of the cab with how hot the seats got. When I traded for a 2015, I was actually disappointed thinking, “Is this thing on?” My 2020 feels somewhere in between. You know, the Goldilocks setting. I’m happy with the adjustment.
I only use my 18 on low. Medium if I’m frigid and wearing a coat, but only for a few minutes. I’ve never used high and you want something hotter?
I felt that, no pun intended, the 2015 & 2017 I owned were not hot enough on cold days. The 2020 is perfect, in my opinion.
Supercruise is suppose to make its way into a bunch of new models. I don’t think they will pick that steering wheel for nothing.
GMC really needs to offer the ‘Ram box’, equivalent as an option… Game changer.
No it’s not lol, why sacrifice the with of your bed for two coolers on each side? For about half the cost you can install a toolbox/cargo box on the bed that is removable to add more space to the bed if needed
I would like to see a middle ground to both of these. you see there is this spot, right behind the cabin and right in front of the wheel that has a lot of space that is only good for getting sticks caught in. Nissan did it on the older titan, but a storage box there. Right size for a medium size tool box or small tool box and tacklebox on one side and a cooler on the other. then integrate the opening latch into the sidestep of the HD’s to keep it all protected.
They did that once and before Ram did. Look up the Avalanche.
I would like to see some lockable storage boxes below the belt line like the option offered in the 70’s in the pickup bed maybe just in front of the rear bumper step, or integrated with the HD bed side step.
Just make it for GMC only GM, if your goal was to differentiate the Sierra and Silverado, quit making the same ground breaking features available to the Silverado
Love my new 2020 Sierra Denali, Interior is just fine! Although an interior color option would be welcome.
prefer the side view mirrors mounted up higher on the doors do not have a clue why they lowered the mounting to the door skin where the chance of damage is increased
aerodynamics. A pillar mounted side mirror allows air to flow inbetween the mirror and the door, disrupting airflow less. lets be honest, the towing mirrors are where its at
I have driven both Ford and GM Trucks and a few years ago I took a job in the oilfield as a safety consultant. I was currently driving a Silverado with the 5.3 L engine. I would drive the Chevy to work and then switch to an F-150 to head out into the field. The very first thing I noticed was the ride quality of the Chevy was superior to that of the F-150. Then I turned off the highway onto a gravel county road and realized if I didn’t slow down the F-150 was going to bounce into the ditch. The ride quality was horrible. Then one day I was out on the highway and when I went to pass a semi-truck I quickly realized the power of the F-150 didn’t match the power of the Silverado. I also noticed the fuel mileage was worse on the F-150 too. The F-150 wasn’t a horrible truck at all but when I started driving both the Silverado and the F-150 I felt like the Silverado was a better personal truck for my needs.
I also disagree on the interior of the Silverado. To me it is a lot nicer than what is written about it and it gets way to much criticism.
Now I have a 2019 GMC LT4 and I love it. I chose it because at the time of purchase it was the only truck available with the 6.2 L and the 10 speed transmission. The 5.3 L is a great powertrain but the 6.2 L is even better.
I also agree with the new styling I think the CMC and Silverado trucks look great on the exterior and hope they don’t change it up to much. When the 2014 year model came out the critics said they didn’t go far enough on the exterior styling but now they say it is to much. I think there are people out there that just aren’t satisfied and it seems like GM has become their whipping boy!!!
Will the front end change so that my 2020 baseplate for wheels down towing with my motorhome can’t be switched over to the 2022 ? The base plate mounts under the front to the frame and tow hooks are removed to allow for the blue ox connectors.
Hopefully you know what I’m talking about
So this was clearly just a test mule for the hummer ev powertrain

2022 GMC Sierra Denali 1500
Let’s face it the interior of the GM trucks although functional are a little underwhelming compared to the Ram. This is especially true I the upper range models. This will be addressed in 2022 and we will once again reign supreme. GM has done a great job since the 2009 bankruptcy to hold the fort and rebuild their leadership. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
