The Chevy Chevelle nameplate was produced between 1963 and 1977, with three generations coming and going in that time. In that relatively short time, the Chevelle established itself as a true enthusiast favorite, and now, one digital artist is reviving the name with a modernized rendering.
Recently posted to social media by Instagram user @wb.artist20, this modern Chevy Chevelle rendering looks aggressive and stylish. GM Authority has covered wb.artist20’s work before, including a modernized Pontiac Aztek, a modern Chevy Monte Carlo, and a modern full-size Chevy Blazer, and true to form, this modernized Chevelle combos new and old cues in equal parts.
“One of my toughest cars to modernize!” wb.artist20 writes in the post. “The Chevelle! Chose ’69 ‘cause it’s the toughest IMO!”
“My concepts are never a claim to be better, just paying homage to the original,” the artist writes, adding that the original “is always better.”
Looking over this modernized Chevy Chevelle rendering, there are definitely some old-school cues to pick out. Up front, quad headlamps shine the way forward with U-shaped signature lighting, connected with a horizontal LED lamp and centrally placed SS badge in the upper grille. Angled corner lamps help to frame the lower air intake, complementing the edge-like hood line.
Moving back along the flanks, we find this modernized Chevy Chevelle lowered over a set of polished five-spoke Chevrolet Camaro SS wheels, housed neatly under squared-off fenders. Lower styling lines break up the panel lines, as do additional creases above the fenders. Also notable is the two-tone color treatment, with a yellow-orange hue for the lower half of the vehicle, and a dark gray finish for the canopy.
With it’s wide, low stance, this modern Chevy Chevelle certainly looks aggressive. The question is – does this design do the original justice? I like it!
IMO, worthy attempt but 1970 SS was the quintessential Chevelle. The front fascia is a no go… the sides are bulky and too squared.
Looks heavy and non aerodynamic.
GM would not build this, even if electric… Look, back in the day, nothing could touch the Chevelle… I sat at the street drag races during the early 70’s and watched Super Bee’s, Road Runners, basically anything Dodge or Chrysler, Ford, and Buick, fall to the Chevelle. Bad ass.
Than you didn’t see the mentioned Mopars with the 426 Hemi motor or the Ford “Thunderbolt” race because they would have creamed the Chevelle. This is what happened at NHRA sanctioned tracks all over the country back in the day.
That rendering looks like they started with a 2017 Mustang GT and modified it.
The idea of a last big ICE V8 muscle car celebrating the return of an iconic nameplate like Chevelle is appealing
But I am writing this 2 years after the original post, I wonder if a search will return the cancelation of this idea.
cringe , cringe dual eyeglasses in front , the rest is camaro mashup . i want to like it but just cant . some things are better left in the past.
Giving the Camaro brand a break might be a nice move. This generation is underwhelming compared with Mustang & Charger.
The muscle era is basically dead, unfortunately, the domain of Boomers about to buy a last car.
Mustang has transitioned to sport & Corvette is there, too. EV’S like Lucid Air 0 to 60 in 3 seconds will change everything.
GM put R&D into SUV with Hummer there to compete with Jeep and Bronco for the “kool kid”/”weekend warrior” demos. Twenty years from now people probably won’t remember Camaro in a meaningful way but Corvette has a good chance of transforming.
I owned a caprice Brougham LS for 20 years and just recently sold it. It only took 18 years for chevy to really replace that car with the Chevy SS and I got more than what I paid for that caprice when I bought it drove it for 20 years and how much is a mint condition 69 Camaro ss worth nowadays? just asking.
As the artist said-the original “is always better.” Enough said.
The only way a new Chevelle is feasible is a sedan
as an SS/Malibu/Impala replacement from 2.7 to an LT5.
I agree, make one car do many things…. the charger as a muscle car also replaced the intrepid, for high sales numbers
It looks like a Mustang.
Cool!
Ok, first. IF you were going to bring back a Chevelle SS, it would be a 1970, period. NOT a 67′ or 68′. Would be a better contender against the challenger/charger as they were never real competitors to the Camaro or Mustang anyway. Follow the same guidelines as Chrysler and you have a winner with no model deadline. They have done it successfully for way toooo long much to GM and Fords dismay with all the profits for the segment which IS different than the Camaro and Mustang, like it or not. Wake up GM, not everyone wants an all around “sports car”. SOME want a comfortable muscle car with more room and exceptional straight line acceleration. No profit in it? BS…..Just look at what they get for “limited” editions. At auction, EVEN more. Not all the world lives on SUV’s, CUV’s but isn’t it funny what FCA has done with it’s trucks and suv’s??? Yeah, PERFORMANCE!!!!!! SC’d motors in ALL!!!! Even a Jeep with the 392 will embarrass you…..
Absolutely the 1970 was the best hands down.
This modernization of the 1969 Chevrolet nailed it perfectly. Keep up the great art WB. Please modernize a 1970 SS LS6 Chevelle for me?
Thanks for your great models.
Joe
I like it.It should be powered by 7.0L 427period.I just sold my ’72 Chevelle and I miss it dearly.Had to make a sacrifice.😞
Exactly what chevrolet need desperately to do. I love it. I’m a 66 guy but I do like the 67’s thru 70 too. But this 69 retro is awesome. GM please do this, put down your arrogance and do this. Quit trying to keep up with the euro’s and satisfy your patrons. Someone start a petition please.
I love the new look. Only one thing, i dont really like how low it sits. Other than that your new look is awesome. Isnt the chevelle one of chevys greatest cars ever. Thanks.
I completely agree with you. I grew up all the way through the 60’s. I am a 66 Chevelle SS wannabe owner but they are either priced out of this world or junked out. This is a new welcome attempt at paying homage to one of the greatest cars of that era.
It looks super good and smooth lines . I think it would be a good Sedan with some back seat room that most do not have any more .
Looks just like all the cookie cutter throwback muscle cars always Boxxy not enough sharp points how about doing something unique how about a 1970 El Camino with a cowl induction hood with the flap that opens every time you step on the gas how about adding some Chrome to the concept now that’s a badass idea
I say build it, and supercharge a 6.2, mated to a 6 speed manual shift. Come on gm, do it.
I don’t like the lower fascia stuck on the front end. It makes the whole front look like a truck, too big top to bottom. I also don’t like the truck like squared off wheel wells. The originals were definitely not round and more squared but this is too squared off with truck like wheel well moldings even. I do like the rest though. If GM ever decided to breathe life into Chevrolet again this would be nice if done as a true to form retro model. Like what Dodge has done with the Challenger. As is, GM seems intent on letting Chevrolet circle the drain a few more years before pulling the plug and making everything GMCorp. They’ll just pull the Bowtie off of the Corvette and stick their GMC badge on it.
Even Chevy nostalgia is dying off and I never thought I’d see that in the midwest. People old and young have kinda just given up on Chevrolet. I’m not sure how much more damage the Bowtie brand can take to be honest. GM has ruined them with poor designs and quality for too long now. Trucks and cars both.
Steve the Camaro is a sports car now with muscle and generally wins in races against the Mustang and Challengers,I speak from experience and from car magazines that tests them. The magazines also almost always pick the Camaro as a better car all around. The Challenger is a heavy car that has power in a straight line but cannot keep up on a road track and the Mustang lacks torque.Go back and check R&T,C&D,etc. if you don’t believe me I still have all the issues.GM plucked BMW’s lead designer to create the current Camaro and it has been a great car for me.EV’s are the future but have a long way to go with range and cost,as well as the grid to charge them across the country and available auto techs to work on them.People right now mostly think they are a fringe and only the rich can afford them,so for now we go with what we know.
Nice
But there should be a base, normal model that we can actually use
And it should be FWD
RWD is useless in the Winter
Awesome ! Especially like the curve of the rear fenders captures the old style. GM is too stodgy to build this but would kick Dodges fiat ass if they did and put a 750hp 6.2 or a 572 in it . Call it the Exorcist or Crusader and whip the Demons ass on the street , track & showroom
Like the look, the bottom line if it would go to the rear wheel would look better now the way it is does look like a Mustang, or take it out.
Gm build it and I will take #1. The pics looks great.
Hideous.
I love it and would like to see it made so I can buy one if they can make where the average working person can afford it.
Concept Chevy Chevelle SS is great! I didn’t catch engine and transmission details? I never owned one but wanted one! When we attended Negro School in 1960’s one of my friends had a black1966 Chevelle SS 396 with four speed manual transmission! I still remember the Chevelle’s exhaust note the way it drove and rode! Another friend had 1965 Chevy Impala SS 327 with four speed manual transmission and vacuum gage on dash. Impala was yellow with black vinyl roof. I’m not sure but impala seemed lower to ground than Chevelle? I never was able to buy a Chevelle! It’s still my dream to buy a classic Chevy Chevelle SS! I read somewhere recently 1965 Chevy Impala was best selling car in 1965!
I would love it much more if they brought back the 70 Monte Carlo SS refreshed with that chevy performance 7.0 liter V8 supercharged and that 8L90 transmission and an upgraded infotainment system I would trade in my 2001 monte Carlo SS or maybe even trade my 2016 chevy ss for it.
Ira, before I was legal to drive, I rode in a 65 and 66 Impala SS, sweet rides! It wasn’t until high school i rode in a 67 and 69 Chevelle, the Chevelle became my best car… Never owned one but I ended up with a Camaro….lol.
It has to have a big block supercharged
Love it
I love it It looks like a modern interpretation of a 69 I think the artist did a great job It’s much better if GM would only look at things like this instead of coming up withb Duds like the Chevy blazer . They should take a clue from Ford look at the Bronco what a hit the Mustang another hit. The Camaro wasn’t so great but has gotten better over the last few years but I think it could have been hit right off the bat if they would have better styling they should hire this artist to do their styling maybe they would sell more cars
Dump the stupid last-gen Terrain square wheel wells and you’ll have a winner!
Now here is one GM should build
I love the new look. Only one thing, i dont really like how low it sits. Other than that your new look is awesome. Isnt the chevelle one of chevys greatest cars ever. Thanks.
I owned a 69 Chevelle and loved it and I love the new aggressive look of this design and would love to see it in production……
The ‘68 shown looks better then concept
All the naysayers on this, WTF!! mustangs camaros and chargers are good but how about a dark horse contender/ not enough selection in muscle market/ whats a camaro worth as an owner if every american muscle appreciator is cornered into one car and you pass another every fifth car down the road/ besides we need to put money into these so that these EVmanufacturers dont eventually vaginize the whole consumer market and eventually just like stick shifts they are phased out even though any dude with self respect and a purist appreciator of driving experience wants that. I say GOOD RENDER OF CHEVELLE/ this sh@t would sell!!
Initially, I thought it looked ok, until I saw it side-by-side with the older one… I’ll take an original, please.
