Competitive Sales Comparison

GMC Terrain sales performance during the third quarter of 2020 puts the compact crossover in 13th place out of 16 competitors in the mainstream compact crossover segment in the United States.

As such, the Terrain was outsold by the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, the Terrain’s corporate cousin and platform mate – the Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Ford Escape, Jeep Cherokee, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Crosstrek, Volkswagen Tiguan, and the Kia Sportage. The Terrain outsold three models – the Dodge Journey, Mitsubishi Outlander and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

The performance gives the Terrain a 3 percent segment share during the quarter, matching the share it held a year ago in Q3 2019.

The GM Authority Take

Compared to the third quarter of 2019, GMC Terrain sales fell by nearly 2,000 units during the third quarter of 2020. In fact, the Terrain posted one of the lowest loses in the segment this quarter, while the Subaru Forester, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Mitsubishi Outlander were the only three models in the segment to report an increase in sales.

Meanwhile, the Terrain’s corporate cousin and platform mate, the Chevrolet Equinox (see Chevrolet Equinox sales), saw sales fall 15 percent during the quarter. Additionally, Nissan Rogue sales declined 38 percent, Ford Escape sales decreased 23 percent, Jeep Cherokee sales fell 21 percent, and Dodge Journey sales were off 40 percent. In the background of those figures, the Terrain’s 7.57 percent drop seems minuscule.

Sales of the Terrain (as well as the Equinox) continued to be hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting GM as well as the entire automotive industry at large, just as it did in Q2 2020. We posit that the drop in Terrain deliveries was the result of the following two macro factors:

  • Sub-optimal supply: the COVID-19 shutdown resulted in the idling of all GM factories across the Americas, including the GM San Luis Potosi plant that produces the Terrain. The circumstance resulted in the depletion of Terrain supply at dealers.
  • Lower demand: stay-at-home orders from the COVID-19 pandemic, along with negative impacts to the economy and spending power, resulted in lower demand during the third quarter.

These two events combined to create a “perfect storm” scenario for reduced deliveries of vehicles that are otherwise growing in popularity and in demand.

We should also note that sales of the two GM compact crossovers – the GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox – totaled 88,789 units for a 13 percent segment share. The numbers are impressive, but didn’t enable the duo to outsell the Toyota RAV4, which saw sales fall nearly 7 percent to 115,799 units during the quarter, for a 17 percent segment share.

It’s also worth pointing out the the Terrain was originally slated to get a midcycle enhancement (MCE) for the 2021 model year. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the launch of the updated model to be pushed back to the 2022 model year. The refresh includes revamped front and rear fascias, the addition of a rugged Terrain AT4 model, plus various other minor enhancements and new features. As a result of the delay, the 2021 model year gets only a few minor changes. See 2021 GMC Terrain changes and updates.

  1. GM needs to make the Terrain look far more rugged like the first generation model. It is amazing that GM did not realize that the secret to the Terrains sales numbers was it’s much more boxy/rugged styling vs. most other compact SUV’s. I can think of very few vehicles other than the Terrain that have gotten worse looking with every update. First generation Theta was best, facelifted Theta got a little worse, and current generation Delta is a little worse still. I tried to convince my wife to get a Terrain instead of our Equinox back in 2012, but she was too cheap.

    1. Totally agree, it has gotten worse looking with every refresh. It lost what a GMC buyer was looking for which is a more aggressive, truck based SUV. It looks now like every other other bar of soap looking SUV. They need to go back to what made the Terrain so successful when it was introduced.

  2. I actually thought this design was an improvement over the first generation. GM should be killing it, but I find the quality of materials inside are not up to the grade of most competitors. Seems to be a common complaint for many shopping the competition.
But we need to hear from current GMC Terrain owners to tell us what they like and what can be improved for us to know for sure.

  3. I like the look of the 2020 Terrain I bought ,but, the interior carpet, visors and doors look and feel cheap. The thing I HATE most is the Start/Stop technology. PLEASE make sure the GM vehicle you buy has the “Option”to turn that off. I found out afterwards that mine doesn’t have that “Option” and I can’t have it installed at the dealership. It has to come from the factory installed. So, when I trade this vehicle in a few months… for something that doesn’t have that cr** I’m going to lose a lot of money. Lesson Learned. Buyer Beware!
