Competitive Sales Comparison
GMC Canyon sales performance during the third quarter of 2020 keeps the midsize pickup truck in last place in its segment in terms of cumulative sales volume, behind the Toyota Tacoma in first place, new Ford Ranger in second place (see running Ford Ranger sales), the Canyon’s corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Colorado – in third place (see running Chevrolet Colorado sales), the all-new Jeep Gladiator in fourth and the Nissan Frontier in fifth.

The GMC Canyon saw its share of the midsize pickup truck segment slip from 5 to 4 percent during the third quarter. By comparison, the Toyota Tacoma claimed 38 percent of the segment while the Ford Ranger enjoyed a 19 percent segment share, the Chevy Colorado and Jeep Gladiator each took 18 and 15 percent, respectively, while the Nissan Frontier took 5 percent share.

It’s worth noting that combined deliveries of the two GM offerings – the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado – totaled 33,731 units, resulting in a 23 percent share. That’s good enough for second place in the segment, behind the Tacoma but ahead of the Ranger and all other offerings.
The mid-size mainstream pickup truck segment contracted 9 percent to 148,149 units during the third quarter of 2020, meaning that Canyon sales decreased at a slightly faster rate than the segment average.

The GM Authority Take
The decrease in GMC Canyon sales in Q3 was not unexpected. In addition to a drop in demand stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, we believe increased competition from the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator, as well as ongoing pressures from the Toyota Tacoma caused Canyon sales to suffer disproportionately.
It’s also worth noting that Canyon inventories were replenished during the first two months of the 2020 calendar year following the UAW strike at the end of 2019, which lasted 40 days and resulted in no units of the pickup truck being built or shipped to dealers. As a result, customers began to have less choice in dealer inventory during the final weeks of the 2019 calendar year, with some dealers experiencing depleted stock of fast-turning models. We believe that this sub-optimal availability also carried into the first quarter of 2020. Following the strike, Canyon production was idled yet again as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, resulting in another two months of production losses.
Demand for the Canyon outpaces supply in normalized months, so it will be interesting to see how GMC Canyon sales fare in the near-term future as inventory is built back up following disruptions caused by the UAW strike as well as COVID-19-related downtime.

About GMC Canyon
The GMC Canyon is a mid-size pickup truck marketed by GM's GMC brand. It is currently GMC's smallest pickup truck, slotting under the full-size GMC Sierra. The current model was introduced in 2015 and represents the second generation of the Canyon nameplate. It rides on the GMT-31XX platform shared with the Chevy Colorado, as well as the international-market Chevrolet Colorado/S10 and Chevrolet Trailblazer. As of September 2018, the GMC Canyon is offered only in the United States and Canada; it is not offered in the two other markets in which GMC does business - Mexico and the Middle East.
The 2018 GMC Canyon represents the fourth model year of the second-generation Canyon. The vehicle remains highly competitive in its segment, offering two gasoline engines and a diesel motor, which is a segment exclusive. As opposed to its Chevy-badged brother, the Chevy Colorado, the Canyon does not offer an off-road-specific model like the Colorado ZR2. However, the Canyon does offer a luxury-focused Canyon Denali model. Some of the biggest criticisms of the second-gen Canyon include a lack of various desired features wanted by many present and potential customers, including a moonroof, a sliding rear window, and an extreme offroad model.
The 2019 GMC Canyon represents the fifth model year of the second-generation Canyon. The vehicle sees new exterior colors and a new set of bright silver 17-inch wheels on the SLE model. Additionally, the 2019 Canyon gets new set of infotainment systems that represent the third generation of GMC infotainment systems, a second in-cabin microphone for the front passenger, a high-definition Rear Vision Camera on some models, UltraSonic Rear Park Assist, a heated steering wheel on SLT and All Terrain models, and 6-way power driver seat on some models. There's also a rearrangement of USB ports in the front and back.
A midcycle refresh for the 2020 model year is expected to bring revised front and rear styling along with interior and powertrain updates. There's also the expected introduction of the Canyon AT4 to replace the Canyon All Terrain. The GMC Canyon is built at the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri operated by GM USA.

I mean geee I guess having maybe 1-2 on the lot versus 282762 Sierra’s that cost the same surely don’t have something to do with it😪😪😪
Actually inventories have been really bad. I have only seen one 2021 on the lot and it lasted a day.
Even the Colorados are not in great number either.
The virus and refresh left GM playing catch up as they killed off the old inventory then shut the plant down and never really have gone full speed since due to call offs.
My local dealer has two 2021 Canyons on the lot, one Denali and one AT4. Also has two Colorado’s.
They have consistently had al least 4 on the lot almost forever.
I get coffee with my wife every Sunday morning and drive the dealerships while drinking it to take inventory.
Not to mention they cut down the trim levels to the point I can’t even get the truck I want anymore. I can get one in the Colorado, but not the Canyon. And the Colorado is ugly.
Exactly.
A better mix of colors, models, and prices would be nice, in addition to just finding one.
How can you make money, keep people employed, and sell a good product, when you don’t have anything available?
GM needs to look at this and start cranking out Canyon’s so dealers can sell and buyers can buy.
I wonder if GM has ever done any marketing research on Canyon buyers vs. Colorado buyers. Alex?…
Colors are just the Samoa s most other models out there.
As for inventory.
They sold down last years models. The new models were to start in March. The Virus hits in February and delays production till late June.
Once production started the Union members start calling off limiting them to one shift.
To keep the one shift going white collar workers move to the line to fill in for the called off union workers.
If it were up to GM they would be running three shifts but the virus and call offs have restricted this.
Many of the vehicles being built are ordered trucks from early this year and they go out as soon as most hit the dealers.
They do know about marketing GMC. They generally market to the higher end buyers who generally order loaded trucks. GMC is not intended to be a volume brand but a profitable low volume brand.
Chevy is the Value brand that caters to low cost buyers to full on buyers that want most everything but a cheaper price.
They change the styling to also also attract people one way or the other.
I always like GMC trim better and like having a truck you don’t see as many of.
But make no mistake if you follow the time line GM has been fighting the same problems here as they have at the Vette plant and others.
Used vehicle sales are up because their are shortages of new product every where. Lease turn in models are moving fast.
Hey C8.R,
Thanks for your response. GM may want to consider bringing you on board – accurate facts and information.
And I like your comment, “I always like GMC trim better and like having a truck you don’t see as many of.”
Thanks!
The issues at the Wentzville plant are well documented but many on the web let personal opinion get in the way,
It is given these trucks are in their last years and the new ones are not far out. At this point there is going to be little investment. The money for the truck program is coming from the CUV sales and now many of them are out they will get to work on the new trucks.
I was a Pontiac guy as it was different from Chevy and I just see the GMC like Pontiac different. LIke they used to say the Camaro was a poor mans Trans Am. LOL!
Thank Mary for disappointing sales. All development money and profits get plowed into the electrics that are coming in 5 years.
Well, that’s just not good. Maybe the days of spending $40,000 on a small/mid-sized truck are over? We have people losing jobs, at the verge of losing homes, can’t pay rent, reduced hours for those who are working, etc. Bet GM wishes they had a $20-28,000 truck now and even that is too darn high IMO.
You can buy a Colorado for that much, if you really want to.
Don’t expect it to be 4×4 or Diesel or anything though.
I will say it again, for those here who think price has something to do with this.
I think price has NOTHING to to with it!!!
It is entirely CONTENT !!
Even the 2021 is an OLD truck, the 3.6 is now OLD for this truck, the interior is an OLD joke for 2021.
Pile on the fact of the GM 8 speed junk transmission coupled with the HORRIBLE GM customer support.
The GM mid-sized trucks will continue to slide, as the Ford and Jeep continue to rise.
However I believe GM will get there, just like everything GM, about two to five years late, with the 2.7T -10 speed, and the 2.8TD – 10 if even offered, a new interior now that GM ( I think ) realizes the GM interior of 2020 sucks, the camera tech, a 10″ screen ( at least), and so on !
Like I have stated before, when GM is finished playing catch up in the EV space, I hope for us GM lovers, GM has enough money left for the rest of the GM line up. As I feel the GM EV is 10 years yet to somewhat mainstream.
GM has let everything other than the EV project slip, even the quick redo on the truck, proves this.
The Cadillac lineup is bottom of the line from a luxury state.
GM just cant seem to get the lead out !
the last time I was at my dealer there were no Canyons that I could find. It seems inventory is quite low.
I never understood why GMC exists – perhaps someone can shed some light on this. Wouldn’t dropping the brand free up resources which GM is always complaining about? I would imagine the bulk of GMC buyers would go over to Chevy given that the two share virtually the same product – truck and large SUV’s wise? I am sure there are a handful of loyal GMC’ers that would never buy a Chevy but I think those number would be low. As far as those who will say GMC offers the Denali line, Chevy could create it’s own sub-brand — high country (I think the Chevy high country trim line is pretty comparable to the Denali).
The make a lot of money. Denali models are like printing mine. They account for over 64% of all GM sales. There is a lot of equity in the Denali name. People are willing to pay for it.
Yes the Denali does make a lot of money !
Yet here is where I think GM just can not figure things out.
Sure the Denali is like printing money, BUT IT WAS THE CONTENT that started the trend !!! NOT THE NAME !!!
And I will admit, at times is has not been much added content, yet someone at GM is smart enough not to let the Denali money machine fail like GM did with Cadillac.
Look at the new trucks and full-size SUVs, the Denali is different, Is it better, well maybe not as far as function, but there are more than one way to skin a cat and if the Denali buyers like it , POOF print money !
Yet I still think GM could get rid of all but Chevrolet if that was what they wanted, but it would take almost the same number of models to sell the same number of vehicles. Some here hate the looks of the HD Chevy, I am one of them, so it would take two models or three or whatever, and that is basically what GM has, the brands are no longer a brand, they are just a model of GM!
Look at it this way, my father in law was confused by my Denali truck, he thought a Denali was like a Tahoe, he had no idea that Denali was a trim or that it was a Yukon with the Denali trim !
Or look at it this way, FCA or what ever they are called today, made the RAM a brand, it is NOT a Dodge RAM, just RAM. Like Jeep, is just Jeep. They are all just FCA vehicles they just took the most popular name for the moment and made it that.
Like if GM just made an Escalade, there is a HUGE % of the population that has no idea it is a Cadillac or a GM for that matter, its an Escalade, a Hummer is a Hummer, a Denali is a Denali.
However where GM is lessening the impact, and risking the money printer is , with the average GM blah with a Cadillac name or a Denali name. When GM adds NOTHING and puts the ” NAME ” on a standard ” BASIC ” Chevrolet, it lessons the value of Denali or Cadillac !
Moaner it is the complete package.
You do understand you can get about 95% of the content of a Denali in any SLT at a cheaper price. But the marketing of a complete package is what grabs most people.
People like the image of having the top model and the grill that shows you got it all.
That has created name equity to where people don’t oh you own a GMC but that you own a Denali.
Same applies to Corvette as few say oh you own a Chevy sports car.
As for your father in law, if he holds poor enough judgment to let you in the family I can understand his confusion.
The bottom line is millions have understood or should I say been captured by the name and have become GMC customers by the image. Customers place value on the name. That is marketing Cadillac lost and has never found again.
To me I was going to buy a SLT but when I could get the Denali with the added bits for the same price it was a clear choice. The Running boards were more than the price difference and I still got the other things like the bed liner, bed lights, vented seats bigger tires and wheels, chrome tow hooks trailer brake, etc. note the price difference was less than $1,000.
C8.R,
I know you do not understand that 5% that make a Denali a Denali !
Just like GM can’t figure out that same 5% that makes a Cadillac a Cadillac !
Your Canyon, there is not even 5% content added for the Denali, just plastic wood sticker instead of plastic carbon fiber plastic.
However the Denali that first made the name did have better content !
Like the new Denali line, different and better content !
GM knows this and scrambled to change the interiors before RAM stole even more market share !
Marketing does sell a name, but it quickly goes away without content, however for your generation that name thing matters more !
So you talk about where are the moderators here when I talk about the Horrible GM customer support, where are the moderators when you always respond with personal attacks ?
And now even my father-in-law, again, who you don’t know !
So I am going to break my rule of, if you have nothing good to say about a person , say nothing then,
Just for you !
Its has to be your p3nis size correct ?
Your d1ck is so small you need to compensate with personal attacks on people you don’t know ?
Or is it that your wife holds your tiny balls in her hands when you get home, therefore you need to lash out at people you know nothing about ?
Or are you even married ? probably that small p3nis thing again !
Is that why you bought your Denali ? it is just different plastic, no added content in that year Canyon, was it to compensate for your small p3nis ?
I never did ask, whos d1ck you had to suck to get your GM 8 speed junk transmission fully replaced ?
That’s probably why I received, such HORRIBLE customer support from GM, I never did suck d1ck like you must do !
Does that work for you, you, old, bald, small d1ck, boomer ?
Or can we stick to GM, vehicles ?
C8.R,
Or it it your lack of intelligence?
You had to work at GM because you were not smart enough to succeed as a professional.
You talk of that uncle that worked there, was it him that got you the job, you know because of your low IQ ?
I bet it makes you feel small when you cant figure out how the new tech works.
Just because you are not smart enough to get it doesn’t mean most of the educated public doesn’t get it.
Maybe you could get some grand kids to help you with the new tech, or did your lack of IQ gene get passed down to them ?
WOW you should really get some professional help for your low self-esteem.
I think they have a pill for that !
Isn’t that a boomer deal, there is a pill for that !
Or is it that you cant take any more pills ?
I bet you can’t mix that p3nis enlarging pill, with the pill to keep it hard for your wife, with a low self-esteem pill.
Did I get that correct ?
Man what a sorry life you must have !
Is there nothing else you can spend your time on other than comment on this site about things you know nothing about ?
Maybe its your lack of success !
Your such a looser that you have to drive a Canyon that has already had the GM 8 speed junk transmission replaced, and preach how you got the best deal ever !
And an Acadia.
I heard when you cant afford real vehicles because of your lack of success in life you have to justify your cheap vehicles as the greatest !
What a looser.
Sorry to interrupt your lunatic ramblings, but I think the word you’re looking for is “loser”.
Sorry, that just really bothers me.
Thanks Nate !
You people get really excited about trim levels.
I knew Denali was a big deal, but holy crap.
Nate,
For me the so called trim, or name does not matter one bit.
Its all content !
Options !
C8.R,
I guess its LOSER !
Lack of success
Small p3nis
Wife holds your balls
Bald
OLD
Impotent
Low IQ
and
Loser !
Don’t worry C8.R you loser, its loser right ?
I will think of more just for you !
Agreed – it’s the content not necessarily name. And yes to Denali being a printing money press. Again that could be the case with Chevy, with a High country sub-brand, as Buick did with the Avenire sub-brand. Regarding styling – it’s all in the eye of the beholder. Ford has one face for its F-150 that sells almost 1 million units annually.
It needs to be updated. The new facelift for the Colorado is bad, and the interior hasn’t changed at all. The new ZR2 is sharp and improved, but I prefer the old Z71’s to the new ones. I do really like the new AT4, aesthetically, but that could also use an interior update.
Most posters have already said it all, but it’s simple for me. I don’t view the Ranger or Jeep as better vehicles, it’s about options. Come on, GM, give us some high end options on the twins and I’ll buy one. Multi-adjustable power seats, dual zone climate control, maybe a sunroof? Rainsense wipers. At least give me the choices.
But then you would be well over $50k and people stop buying mid size around $40k. Sales drop fast at that point.
Mid size truck have a narrow price window unlike full size trucks and they lack the volume so the lack the price scale.
No argument there, C. I just don’t need a full size 1/2 ton. But I do realize the options will push the mini-truck over 50k. Rock and a hard place.
I bought my Canyon because it was the size I wanted. Even as I purchased it I sat in the show room looking at a Sierra SLT that was just a little more extra cab. It was a great buy and tempting. But I did not want or need a full size truck.
Now I did get a Denali but I also was not going to spend over $40K either. But I did my shopping and I found a Denali loaded for under $40K. I had looked at the ZR2 but they were new and not budging on price. To be honest the Denali is more what I needed as I really don’t off road. It was cool looking and different from all the other Colorado’s. Like the GMC you don’t see them everywhere.
What many forget is if they offer more expensive items it will push up the price. If they hold the line on price then they go cheaper on the things offered. You could lose the full boxed frame Toyota save money there with a lighter frame. You could lose rear disc brakes. The Taco still has drum brakes to save money. Etc.
I have went around and around with C8.R on this subject.
How do you know, How does he know ?
I would buy the mid-sized truck for the same money as the full-sized as long as the options are the same !
I think size has NOTHING to do with the options or price.
Audi is getting more money than a full-sized GM truck out of a mid-sized SUV , so is Mercedes, BMW, and so on !
Its the content the customer wants, in the size of vehicle they want to drive.
Look at it this way, there are A LOT, HUGE, WAY MORE, mid-sized vehicles on the road than the full-sized trucks.
MOST people in the USA drive a smaller than full-sized vehicle.
Why will GM not put the content in a mid-sized and try it !
Probably because they are still taking vehicle ” wants and needs ” advise from the ” Good Enough ” crowd like C8.R.
It would be better to compare Colorado plus Canyon sales to the other competitors. They are basically the same truck so are cannibalizing each others sales. If you do that, the GM midsize trucks are in second place behind Toyota but ahead of Ford, Nissan, and Jeep.
I tried to upgrade to a 2020 when the deals were good but they didn’t have one with options I wanted. Now I was looking at a 2021 canyon but I’m not a fan of black wheels and colors and limited options may appeal to most but not me. My 2017 Canyon looks better all the time!
John save your money till the new model comes out. You would just trade for the same truck you have now.
Lack luster Interiors and horrible driving seats
Do not speak to a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
C8.R,
I will try not to talk to you then you fool !
What a loser, see that Nate, LOSER !
Did you have something auto related to say C8.R AKA little d1ck ?
Or is it C8.R, AKA d1ck sucker scott3, ?
You are such a low self esteemed, d1ck sucking, tiny p3nised, loser !
Man it must be burning you up inside, Ha, Ha !
Your wife called me this morning said she wanted a real man to satisfy her !
O thats right, I should take C8.Rs advice and stop talking to fools like him !!!
But like C8.R said, he obviously despises the wisdom of my words.
Why else would he even take the time out his day to respond ?
Again,
What a sad, small, low self esteemed, unsuccessful, loser !!
C8.R,
It is typical of losers like yourself, most are great at dishing it out, but whimper like the ball-less losers that you are when having to take it !!!
Such a sad, sad, bald little loser !
I truly feel sorry for you !
Is it hard to get up in the morning ?
Knowing what a huge disappointment in life you have become ?
