GM Design Shares New Sketches Of Rugged Mystery Crossover

General Motors Design has shared a series of new sketches for a rugged mystery crossover with a boxy silhouette and expressive LED light signatures.

Theses two sketches, which were posted by the GM Design Instagram account this week, show the front and rear-three quarter views of the unnamed off-roader. While the account did not say which GM brand it was designed for, we think there are a few clues that could point to this little five-door crossover being a GMC. The red front tow hooks, grille accents and wheel center caps remind us of the red accents on the GMC AT4 line of products, while the unique curve in the D-pillar takes on a C-shape to the GMC Sierra‘s headlights. The three-segment LED headlights and taillights also remind us of the curved three-segment lighting signatures embedded in the Sierra’s taillights.

That said, this crossover also has some cues that remind us of current-day Chevrolet products, such as the black plastic front grille and contrasting white roof.

We still think this wide-set, tough-looking crossover would make a great design for the rumored GMC subcompact crossover, though. As we reported previously, this rumored small crossover model was being deliberated over within GM before ultimately being taken off the table, but it may now be under consideration once again.

If it ever does arrive, the rumored B-segment GMC crossover is expected to wear either the Granite or Graphyte nameplates, (GM has filed to trademark these nameplates a couple of times over the past few years) and would likely ride on the same VSS-F platform as the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX. The vehicle in this sketch has similar dimensions to those crossovers, though it looks much more focused on off-road capability than either the Trailblazer or Encore GX.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer

It’s unlikely that a future GMC crossover, or any new GM crossover for that matter, will look much like this. These sketches shared on the GM Design Instagram page are simply proposals and ideations for new vehicles, and it’s doesn’t seem as though GM would share approved sketches for upcoming production vehicles in such a casual way. That said, it’s always interesting to see what kind of projects GM designers spend their time on and what kinds of designs catch the automaker’s attention.

  1. I voted for GMC, only because there was no choice to not make it at all, for any division. That thing is so fugly even its mother couldn’t like it! The body looks like it ate one of the new Hummers, and the wheels look like they belong at a ninja supply shop! Future design is one thing, but this is F—-d up design!

  5. I see the future design somewhere in there but not now or in the next 4 years, it’s too radical of a change. My generation grew up in the sixties and this design is fugly but if your grandchildren will be turning 16 in a few years, it’s more their style IMO. Just like mobile or alcohol marketing, start marketing to those little kids/future buyers…

  7. Outward visibility appears worse than the camaro. Not good for anyone living with these vehicles. Do not get designers fascination with high waistlines.

    1. Agree. The high belt line is ridiculous. I don’t see how the “new” Camaro, has lasted as long as it has. Who is designing this crap. Maybe when enough car crashes happen because of poor visibility, the manufactures, will stop this latest design craze. bring back the designs of the ’60’s and ’70’s. Enough of this crap already!

  9. Tame it down a bit and it would be a good next gen Terrain.

  10. Apparently vision wasn’t a huge priority— no rear view mirrors and small windows.

  11. Pretty soon with hardly any windows to see out of a periscope will be needed. This design looks like rearview cameras will be utilized for rear mirrors due to visibility issues. Not a fan of spare tires mounted on tailgates just too many rattles and inconvenience of opening it. I am a GM guy and retired employee but harshly criticized the Aztec but that got me no career points.

  12. To those complaining about the narrow windows, poor visibility and lack of side mirrors…chill out! This is purely a design study and a concept. As an automotive designer myself, we draw the cars like this to enhance the drama and the flair. We are far from building cars without side mirrors, and in the US, we can’t even get side view cameras approved by NHTSA yet.
Every original car sketch at inception and in its conceptual state has big wheels, tiny windows and many of them eliminate side mirrors. Just how it is.

  14. Looks like something designed by a kid riding on hockey sticks with today’s absurd addiction to undersized windows.

  15. I love it! I am a GMC enthusiast and would love to see a slightly toned-down version of this four-door SUV. Too many rounded jellybeans on the market today, that’s why i love GMC – not afraid to use some ‘angles’.

  16. Exactly! Granite should have been built long ago, but with more off road chops, a click above Trailblazer. This is a space GM has done well with since Encore & it’s replaced the C Segment Cruze/Verano in the US with the Gamma variant Trax replacing Sonic.
With Encore GX getting poor reviews for handling it would make sense for GMC to pick up any lost sales.
Then again, GMC needs a Hummer to compete with Bronco and this could be it.
