The GM Authority Take
Chevy Sonic sales significantly outperformed the segment during the third quarter of 2020, with sales increasing by triple digits. The Honda Fit and Nissan Versa were the only other two models to post an increase in sales during the quarter, with gains of 4 percent and 24 percent, respectively.
While the Sonic initially launched to much fanfare and consumer interest as a highly-competitive model with a significant amount of character, excitement, and potential, all of those factors have dwindled over the course of the model’s lifecycle. The product itself arguably lost its competitive edge and many distinguishing characteristics as part of the 2017 facelift. Prior to the update, the Sonic enjoyed a unique position in the segment thanks to a one-of-a-kind persona, which was afforded by a unique exterior design, with distinct and playful headlamps, gauge cluster, and other features.
Since then, GM has gradually lost its position in the segment, gently removing the vehicle from various global markets. In fact, the United States is currently the only remaining market where the Sonic is on sale after GM scrapped it in South America, Mexico, Canada, Korea and Australia.
GM recently confirmed that the Sonic will be discontinued at the end of October 2020, as GM Authority first reported.

Comments
The fact that Honda and Toyota have exited this segment and Nissan trimmed the Versa to one model in North America leaves Hyundai / Kia as the the only serious contenders in the sub-compact field. I doubt they’ll stay in much longer.
The Sonic should stay on sale as a hatchback. It is a great little car.
Leave it to GM to abandon a vehicle that their customers like and want. They seem to be so out of touch with the real world. Sad.
I was really hoping for a second gen Sonic, maybe a proper hot hatch w/ 2.0t, to replace my 2013.
Guess the Germans, Japanese, and Koreans are the only manufacturers who can make a decent b/c segment vehicle.
Onix would be an exciting replacement. Again, as we have seen many times, GM builds a fantastic vehicle with not possibly of being Federalized.
This used to happen with Opel. Now, the GEM platform is producing excellent offerings especially for young first time buyers during a depressed economy. Tracker would j.g ave been a logical replacement for Trax and new Chinese Encore over at Buick.
GM is transferring over to the new VSS Architectures but this doesn’t mean GEM can’t plug holes & equal fat profits in the developed world.
Bring the Onyx here with a proper engine. Problem solved
GEM cars are never coming to the US market. The GX and Trailblazer fit the bill for an eventual Sonic and Trax replacement.
It would be nice to see GM stick a proper drivetrain in the VSS-F platform to appease buyers looking pay a little more for a bit of an upgrade over their old Sonics and Cruzes.
How can that be?
Mary Barry said people don’t want small cars so GM is getting out of the cars business.
Guess people are buying them before they are gone? Permanently
Being a Sonic owner and just 73 miles from Lake Orion where final production will cease sometime in October 2020 for the Chevrolet Sonic lineup. The ending market numbers are surprizing for the Sonic and glad of and it is my hope that GM in the future will get one of out of country cars here like the Chevrolet ONIX to the US in the future.
This makes more sense than most…
I have to to learn more of this from you! Also I am going to share this |blog straight away. TY!
I think the Kia Rio sedan looks better.
