Competitive Sales Comparison

Chevy Blazer sales continued to experience healthy growth during the third quarter of 2020, jumping 45 percent in the U.S. market. The increase is all the more impressive given the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. What’s more, the notable sales improvement in Q3 follows similar growth during the second quarter of 2020, despite a very tight vehicle supply.

When compared to its expanded segment, the Camaro-inspired SUV moved to the fifth spot in its segment during the quarter. It was outsold by the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Pilot, and the Blazer’s larger stablemate – the Chevrolet Traverse.

On a segment share basis, the Blazer accounted for a 6 percent segment share, behind the 12 percent share each held by the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Honda Pilot took 7 percent, while the Traverse took six percent.

The mainstream mid- and full-size crossover segments, comprised of CUVs with a starting price in the vicinity of $30,000, expanded 1.32 percent to 523,128 units in Q3 2020, meaning that Blazer sales significantly outpaced the segment average.

Narrowing down the segment to only midsize crossovers with two rows of seating like the Blazer, the Chevy offering came in second place. It was only outsold by the Jeep Grand Cherokee (by nearly 27,000 units). The Hyundai Santa Fe and Ford Edge trailed the Blazer by roughly 3,000 units each. The Blazer and Honda Passport were the only models to post an increase this quarter on an annual basis.

The Blazer’s share of the midsize, two-row CUV segment improved to 18 percent from 11 percent in the year-ago quarter. In fact, Chevy’s Rita Kass-Shamoun tells GM Authority that the Blazer increased its retail market share by 2.2 percentage points compared to the third quarter of 2019.

The mainstream mid-size, two-row crossover segment contracted 8.3 percent to 167,329 units during the third quarter of 2020. In this case, Blazer sales also significantly outpaced the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Blazer sales faced a multitude of headwinds during the third quarter of 2020, including hindered availability caused by the idling of GM North America production due to COVID-19. Blazer production at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico stopped in March and resumed in late May. Additionally, consumer demand for vehicles as a whole softened as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even so, The Blazer managed to beat the odds, posting a very impressive sales performance. Not only did the Blazer gain sales volume and general segment share, but it also won a very impressive 2.2 percent of retail market share.

Going forward, we believe that Chevrolet’s new midsize crossover will have even more success once consumer spending rebounds and supply returns to a more optimal level.

    1. wrong, this thing has no originality whatsoever and this crossover is heading on my list of the worst automobiles of all time, just junk throughout and it reminds me of the pontiac aztek.

    1. Name a single company that isn’t about the dollars, especially car companies. They exist to manufacture a product at a profit. Nothing else.

A car company that builds on feelings and passion doesn’t survive. An example is Borgward.

They built a VERY good line of automobiles, and they were sold here in the US back in the 1950s. They were sturdy, dependable, quite good-looking for the era – especially when compared with the other imports of the time. Also, unlike other German makes, were easy and inexpensive to maintain, and didn’t require much.

The company died because the leaders of the company put every one of their ideas into production. They had so many models, and so few sales on many, that they could not recoup their costs, much less make money. The company died.

  4. Good looks is important to why anything is successful.. the Chevrolet Blazer has a look of a winner compared with it’s competitors where their appearance seem like an afterthought and still look like a truck.

  5. Crickets here. I kept saying in the 3 sedans left thread that this is what’s replacing most sedans but you still have yellers here talk about GMs demise because
the Buick Century isn’t on sale anymore…

  6. This is great, just wish there was true HOT version. With GM sedans, you always had go fast models.

  7. Hello?… There is a glitch in this reporting.
Has anybody noticed sales totals for the Toyota Highlander?… changes all the numbers.
Also, the Blazer made in Mexico is probably getting dumped into fleets… just like the imported Buick models (note their jump in sales).
The Blazer also appears to be eating away at sales of the American made Traverse.

  10. Mexican Blazer not replacing the old US made Blazer.
Great job GM. Let’s close down all the US car and truck plants and import all your products.
Great way to make max profits. Way to go Mary Barry.

General Motors wants to sell to Americans but doesn’t want to employ them.

By the way. This is an overpriced vehicle. Much more choices in the Jeep Cherokee at a better price.

    1. One thing GM does that I admire is they’re doing everything they can to dump the UAW. They have a what, $30.phr cost disadvantage over the same products made by non UAW employees. THOSE employees here in the states that is, seem to be doing just fine so much so they routinely reject the efforts to unionize their jobs. THAT cost disadvantage is why GM puts out such “ehh” junk and why they’re hot to trot on EV. It costs them X more per vehicle due to labor costs for an identical product.

Probably 99% of all GM EV’s will have 1 power plant with varying degrees of “mileage” and “power.” Gone will be multiple engine options, transmissions, computers etc… that go along w/ICE vehicles, and the costs to develop each of them. That platform can support multiple vehicles from coupes to sedans to CUV’s. That said the EV market hasn’t arrived and GM has all their eggs in that basket.

You’re right about the GC, its a fantastic vehicle even 11 years on and there is a model for everyone… great product, great marketing, great value, well developed brand… GM is none of those…

      1. The uaw is not GMs problem. If all UAW members worked for FREE building the Lordstown made Cruze, the Cruze was STILL overpriced.
GM still points the blame on the workers. The old image of the UAW is still the impression that the uninformed believe.
It’s time that the spotlight is put on Mary Barry and the rest of the GM leadersheep. Many cost saving opportunities from the top all the way down

  14. Just ordered a 2021 Turbo 2.0 AWD Blazer to replace the wife’s 2012 Equinox. It’s a little bigger without being too large as we only have one child. It looks modern and sporty and I dig the historic name. Since we own two Silverado Diesel’s I couldn’t care less that it’s not a body on frame “Blazer”, I would have bought a Tahoe if I wanted that.

So haters and keyboard warriors can run their fingertips all they want while GM racks up the sales on a nice little SUV. If it’s half the car our little Equinox was, we will be happy.

If not, I guess we could always trade it on an $80k Tahoe High Country, LOL!

    2. I’m with you on this. I’m glad the Blazer is doing well, and I hope you like it. Yeah, I’d be in the group that went for the Traverse, but the Blazer does earn its success for what it does. It’s a good product, and a better idea than not. Attractive and roomy and well-enough performing is a good formula, and it’s all most people really care about for their vehicles. And honestly, for the most part, it’s more than you’d get from a fair chunk of new vehicles you could buy instead. It’s a work that’s earned it’s place, and why spend all that extra money on a Tahoe? It’s not like being body-on-frame makes it an off-road master, so what difference does it really make? I’d call the Blazer’s achievments a success. And if it works well for you, I’d rather you just enjoyed your new ride.

Since I am now an Aerospace R&D engineer I will just laugh off any comments to my abilities to make decisions while I go wrench on my Buick Grand National…

  15. We own a 2019 Blazer, we love it! It has 308 ponies under the hood – plenty of go fast! We find it has a great amount of interior space and is comfortable on long drives! We test drove the caddies and found them a little tight inside and difficult to get in the rear seat. Cadies are extremely nice looking but the 2nd row is tight, no longer have kids in the house so mainly the back seat is used for adults. When you open the rear door there is a b pillar support that extends out and you hit it getting in.

Admittedly not a problem for younger adults but for older folks(you set that age) its tight!
