It took two years for the Multi-Pro tailgate, originally introduced on the 2019 GMC Sierra, to make its way to the Chevrolet Silverado. For the Bow Tie brand, the new, flexible tailgate will be branded as Multi-Flex. Currently launching on the 2021 Silverado, the Multi-Flex will be identical to the Multi-Pro, offering various positions to minimize effort and maximize achievement.
In all, the Chevy Multi-Pro tailgate will offer six positions, which we have outlined just below.
1. Primary Gate
The primary gate is identical to that of a traditional tailgate. It can be opened using the power release button on the key fob, from inside the truck or from a button on the actual tailgate.
2. Primary Gate Load Stop
The primary gate load stop helps prevent items from sliding out of the box. It requires the primary gate to be open.
3. Foldable Inner Gate For Easy Access
The inner gate folds down for easy access when loading and unloading the box.
4. Full-Width Step
The inner gate folds into a large step for easy entry and exit from the box. It has a maximum weight capacity of 375 pounds (170 kg). An assist handle extends from the driver’s-side of the box, enabling easier entry.
5. Inner Gate Load Stop
The inner gate includes a load stop to help prevent second-tier items from sliding out of the box.
6. Inner Gate Work Surface
Opening the inner gate outward provides a work surface as well as second-tier loading ability.
It’s also worth noting that, in addition to the six tailgate positions, the Chevy Multi-Flex offers a built-in speaker as an official Chevy accessory. The Bluetooth-connected speaker is housed in the two outboard sections of the mid-gate, while one of the inside panels provides controls for sound.
As we reported previously, the Multi-Flex tailgate was introduced on the 2021 Silverado 1500, where it’s optional on every trim from Work Truck to High Country. The tailgate is expected to become available on the 2022 Silverado HD (2500HD and 3500HD).
For those wondering, the Chevy Silverado – as well as its corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra – will receive a thorough freshening for the 2022 model years that will include new front and rear fascias, a new interior, and various other updates and improvements.
We’ll have more on all things Silverado shortly, so be sure to subscribe to GM Authority for the latest Chevrolet Silverado news, Chevrolet news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

Better not have a trailer hitch on there! Oops, forgot.
Still works well, even with a trailer hitch. The only difference is that the inner gate doesn’t descend fully.
A hypothetical: do you expect your truck’s door to open fully when you’ve parked 5 inches away from another vehicle? How is this any different?
And there’s already trailer hitches available that clear the door. Nonissue.
So GM goes from knocking tailgate features in their old Howie Long commercials, to calling tailgate features the best thing since sliced bread in their new commercials. Well, I didn’t care for Ford’s 10 years ago and I’m not about to start caring now because GM decided to hop on the bandwagon.
Let’s see. Do I put the hitch pin in after I put my hitch in the receiver??????
shouldn’t be driving without a trailer and a trailer hitch in place – illegal in many places!
Display message on screen: Hey dumb f**k, remove trailer hitch before using tailgate features.
Listen to you guys! They’re trying something new. I’m happy they’re trying a my new ideas. Some of us Americans choose “NOT” to even think about drive 4 Dr family cars. Give them some credit. They’re trying new and different things.
YOUR new ideas??
I have this tailgate on my 2020 Sierra 2500HD, and I love it, it is far superior to a standard tailgate. The first time you load something heavy in the bed of your truck and use position 3 listed above you will be sold.
Wishing Multi-Flex was available on Silverado HD in 2021. I guess you need to buy 2021 GMC Sierra HD to get this feature.
Does anyone reading these comments know if this can be retrofitted? I’m sure there are others that are/will be in my position; I took delivery of an early-2021 1500, and I’d like to have this tailgate on my truck.
Pretty sure you can order it
Maybe next week you can read about how this compares to the GMC version. Maybe do a side by side comparison and a head to head competition. May the best exact same tailgate that we’ve seen out for 2 years win…
And don’t forget it probably cost $4000
Improvements needed.
#1 Install a lock position so that the spring-loaded tailgate does not bounce in the down position going across rough ground.
#2 Lower the angle so that the tailgate is level with the floor of the box.
#3 Tighten up the clearances so dust does not enter with a box cover installed (or granular cargo run out at the corner gaps).
#4 Tighten up the flex gate clearances so it does not collect as much dirt as well.
#5 Make the inner surface of the gate smoother.
