2018-2021 Chevrolet 6500XD Low Cab Forward Trucks Recalled Over Starter Motor Fault

Isuzu of America has issued a recall for thousands of 2018-2021 model year Chevrolet 6500XD Low Cab Forward commercial trucks due to an issue with the starter motor ground wire. Isuzu builds the Chevrolet 6500XD for General Motors.

The problem: the ground cable connecting the starter motor to the vehicle frame may break around the starter-side eyelet opening, resulting in either a slow engine crank, or no crank at all. This will render the vehicle unable to start and could potentially leave the driver stranded.

The hazards: if the starter motor ground cable is broken and repeated attempts are made to start the vehicle, the starter “may ground through the steel braiding of the power steering hose, allowing it to heat up and possible rupture, increasing the risk of a fire.”

The fix: dealers will replace the starter motor ground cable and will inspect and replace the steering hose if damage exists. These repairs will be done at no cost to the owner.

Affected components: starter motor ground cable, power steering hose.

Affected vehicles:

  • 2018 Chevrolet 6500XD Low Cab Forward
  • 2019 Chevrolet 6500XD Low Cab Forward
  • 2020 Chevrolet 6500XD Low Cab Forward
  • 2021 Chevrolet 6500XD Low Cab Forward

Number of affected vehicles: 4,352.

Owners should: owners are advised to wait for Isuzu or GM to get in contact with them, at which point they will be instructed to make an appointment with the nearest dealership. The recall is expected to begin on October 16th, 2020. Owners can also contact Chevrolet customer service using the contact information below.
