Will The GMC Hummer EV Pickup Have A Midgate?

General Motors just teased the upcoming GMC Hummer EV, showing off the all-electric pickup truck’s wild new Crabwalk Mode, which enables the pickup to move diagonally thanks to four-wheel steering. With an official reveal scheduled for Tuesday, October 20th, we’re still more than a month away from the big debut, leaving us to ponder what other interesting features the new Hummer EV pickup might offer – like the possibility of a midgate between the bed and cabin.

Looking over all the GMC Hummer EV pickup photos and videos released thus far, we find the new battery-driven truck has a relatively short bed – approximately four feet. As such, it would make sense to offer a midgate that allowed customers to load longer items (such as lumber) without worrying about it sticking out from the tailgate.

Further more, previous teaser videos reveal that the GMC Hummer EV pickup has an integrated cab and bed setup, as GM Authority covered previously. This basically means the rear end of the truck is part of the same metal as the cab section. This sort of design provides a number of benefits, including greater overall body rigidity and lower overall weight, plus, when equipped with a midgate, enhanced flexibility.

Another General Motors vehicle that incorporated an integrated bed and cab design with a midgate is the Chevy Avalanche. Produced between 2001 and 2013, the four-door Chevy Avalanche lasted two generations, and garnered a fair number of fans along the way.

For now, we are still waiting on official confirmation that the new GMC Hummer EV will indeed offer a midgate design that allows owners to pass long items between the bed and rear cab. Luckily, with a debut scheduled just over a month away on October 20th, we won’t have to wait long too find out for sure.

As a reminder, the GMC Hummer EV is based on the GM BT1 platform, and will incorporate GM’s latest Ultium battery technology. Production is set to kick off at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant in Michigan next year.

  1. It’s going to have a midgate. GM knows how popular that feature was on the Avalanche, and just like the Avalanche, the Hummer has an integrated cab and bed. That almost demands a midgate, it’s so convenient. Take it to the bank.

  3. I currently have a midgate in my Cadillac EXT and it’s proved to be so handy that it’s the reason I haven’t sold that 2003 truck yet.

  4. I sure hope so, that was such a useful feature on my ‘03 Avalanche. I should never have sold that truck!

  5. It has to have one. If it doesn’t what’s the point of a 4 foot bed, standard lumbar comes in 8 foot lengths, at 4 feet you have as much wood out as in, it doesn’t work.

  7. I refuse to buy another truck UNLESS it has a midgate. I’ll keep my 2013 avalanche forever until that happens
