New Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept Revealed, Will Rival GM Full-Size SUVs

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has debuted the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept, which will serve as a direct rival to the line of General Motors full-size SUVs.

This new three-row SUV will be available in standard Jeep Wagoneer guise or as a premium Grand Wagoneer. As such, the regular Wagoneer models will compete with the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL, while the Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be positioned to take on the Yukon Denali, Yukon Denali XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV.

While only a concept for now, the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are slated to go into production next year as 2022 model-year products. Both models will be built in Metro Detroit at FCA’s Warren Truck Assembly plant, which currently builds the Ram 1500 Classic. The automaker says that “as a nod to its manufacturing home and the brand’s headquarters, the Concept’s full-pane glass roof houses a map showcasing Detroit and the surrounding area.”

FCA is keeping exact details on the powertrain a secret for now, but the concept utilizes a “no-compromise plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain system” the automaker says, which offers “sophisticated, fun-to-drive, on- and off-road performance, leading 4×4 capability and a zero-emission, near-silent driving experience.” It’s not clear if all Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models will be hybrids, or if pure ICE models will be available as well.

FCA also says the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept features “the pinnacle of ultra-premium, full-size SUV interiors,” with luxury materials like open-pore wood, aluminum, a suede headliner and thick pile carpet floor mats made from recycled fabric. The SUV also has a 12.3-inch driver information display, which is joined by a 12.1-inch horizontal touchscreen front-and-center and an additional 10.25-inch passenger screen. Rear-seat passengers can also utilize a 10.1-inch display housed within the center console between the two second-row captain’s chairs and receive their own 10.1-inch touchscreen mounted on the front seatbacks. The third-row bench seats three, giving the Grand Wagoneer Concept room for seven passengers.

Look for the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and luxurious Jeep Grand Wagoneer to begin arriving at dealerships in mid-to-late 2021. More details on pricing and trim levels will be available following the two SUVs’ official debut.

  1. I hate to say it but Jeep did a much better job of design execution than GM.

My fear become a reality. Just like Ram completely leapfrogged Chevy and Ford so has now Jeep completely embarrassed the new Tahoe and Yukon, even the Denali trim.
It is almost unimaginable and or laughable just how far behind GM is in the interior Department.
    That will sell like Hotcakes.

    1. Not so fast mate! This is a great competitor. But not everyone wants a touch screen only interface. To me it is a tacky look with many screens. I like the new Denali trim and the Escalade has an amazing interior. So I think GM will hold its own. It is really about preference. FCA has become the audi of tech interiors for american brands. Yes it will sell like Hotcakes!

      1. It has a rotary knob for the screens.
I said it back in 2012 when the Model S came out and will continue to state this….people want tech in their vehicles now. Yeah maybe not all but most. Tesla changed the game forever.
I mean the updated Hyundai Kona (Cheap Hatch) has a bigger screen than the 80K GMC Yukon Denali.
GM better step up their game because they will lose multiple Generations of Customers growing up right now.

      2. Yeah, I’m usually with you Momolos, but Dblezy is dead on here.

First off, this is the top-of-the-line “Grand Wagoneer” in these photos. This is *supposed* to be the one that dethrones the Escalade and Navigator. And it sure as hell isn’t about to do that.

A ton of screens does not a truly class-leading luxury interior make. In fact, many brands more down-market are trying to use these screens to cover for lack of REAL luxury features, like wood, aluminum, leather, all thoughtfully integrated. No matter how you spin it, the overall design and precision craftsmanship of the Escalade and Navigator have this thing beat handily. You look below the surface of this, and it’s going to be the same old FCA low-quality craftsmanship, say nothing of the huge tech advantage the Escalade has over this thing (SuperCruise, augmented reality overlay navigation, OLED displays, etc.) Watch and see.

I think you confuse all these screens for high luxury. That’s not the case. The Denali name recognition alone, and high brand prestige, will keep it competitive with this thing, let alone the Escalade. It’s overall build quality will place it above it.

Don’t get me wrong, I think this is a terrific first effort by FCA into the large luxury SUV market. And it will sell. But it’s not all you make it out to be. Beyond the fact that not many people will be willing to drop $100k on a Jeep, people will soon see that this is really just a top of the line Ram with a third row instead of a bed and a lot of screens. Not worth that kind of pricing.

        1. I hate to disagree but no way is Jeep a Cadillac competitor.
Jeep is 100% a GMC competitor and I am sorry but this interior makes the Yukon Denali interior look like it was designed 10 years ago. Don’t even get me started on the Non Denali GMC version.
GM always does just enough and that is quickly becoming NOT Good Enough anymore.
Some might not like the new design and tech of car interiors but Tech is what will sell cars going forward and GM is waaaaaaaay behind in that Department.
My good friend just got a Yukon Denali two or three weeks ago and he legit just told me today he doesn’t care how much he loses on his Denali he is for sure getting this when it comes out. I asked him why and he said, did you see that interior? It looks like a Jeep version of an Audi Interior.
Cannot argue with that logic. He is correct.

          Reply
          1. But it’s not a GMC competitor. How do we know? One, this will top out well over $100k, which is where the Escalade and Navigator top out, not the Yukon Denali. And two, Jeep engineers and management themselves have said this is going for the Escalade and Navigator. They made that bed, now they have to lie in it.

It won’t even get real leather, but a synthetic substitute. Don’t buy the “eco-friendly” excuse…they’re just trying to cut costs.

As far as your friend, not only is that anecdotal evidence at best, but it’s proving my point. Why does it look like an Audi interior? Because it has a ton of screens. Like I said, adding a ton of screens are what pretenders are doing to look more upscale, to compensate for lack of REAL luxury. Audi has real luxury, this thing is nowhere close.

GM knows the luxury market far better than Chrysler does. And they know that tech is only beneficial long-term in the luxury market if you supplement it with true luxury craftsmanship. The Escalade has this. The Denali does too (to a lesser extent), which is why the Denali brand is a gold mine for GM. Jeep and this Grand Wagoneer do not. They’re throwing a bunch of screens in there to try to distract people with the shiny object, but guaranteed, that interior will be nowhere NEAR the build quality of the Escalade, and won’t top the Yukon Denali. Having one friend who disagrees doesn’t change that.

I owe you an apology. I was totally wrong.
Jeep just announced that the Grand Wagoner will Surpass 100K fully loaded. That is insane.
          Wagoner will start at 60K
Zero chance I would ever pay 100K for any Jeep product.
On a side note, other publications have a ton of images of the interior and I hate to say but jeep truly hit a Grand slam with it. Still not paying 100K for one though.

    2. General Motors is definitely not far behind in the interior design game (Look at the C8 Corvette and their new full-size SUVs). Their latest BOF SUVs and the C8 Corvette have shown that they can make great interiors when they put the passion, money, and energy into making a quality interior. FCA has also been making excellent interiors in many of their products (Ram 1500, Chrysler Pacifica, and now this new Grand Wagoneer). The concept version of this new model is a promising indicator of what the production ready version will be like. While the Grand Wagoneer is an exciting new addition to the segment, General Motors has a huge advantage in the full-size SUV space with their redesigned SUVs, and will continue to dominate their segment.

      1. @Mr. Pink
I never said that GM will not own most of the segment. All I am saying is that they did not go far enough in the Tech and interior Department to stave off any new comers into the segment. They left the door open.
Anyone remember that crack in the door that BMW and Mercedes left open for a little Company called Audi?
Interiors and tech is what will matter going forward.

    3. Compare the Reliability of FCA electronics, and GM electronics. Then take a look at just how many MORE Jeep has.

After people have em for a bit, they will see how unreliable they really are and sales will fall.

Notice how excitement was high for the Gladiator at first, yet it eventually died off and now dealers are giving them away. I believe that’s due to the niche market for it though, and not reliability.

  9. The interior looks really nice.

But they biffed it on the exterior.
    – The roof looks like a cap. Like the way a full size van looks
    – There’s not enough tumblehome in the greenhouse
    – The rear glass is too upright
    – The separate side glass (which isn’t even flush mounted) / body color pillars was a mistake. Makes it look dated.
    – Too much rear overhang.

    2. You are reaching if you think this looks better than the Escalade’s interior. The Escalade is a luxury vehicle by default. The Grand Wagoneer is a luxury version of the Wagoneer just like the Denali for Yukon.

  11. The front reminds me of Norelco look from Lincoln’s back in the day. Rear looks like present day lincoln’s. Overall not very flattering.

Interior is so dark. So many complain about all black interiors these days and this is one of the worst examples.

Too many video screens with too many buttons. Look at all the buttons on each steering wheel spoke. Guessing it will be very luxurious, especially considering the $100k price. But I’m not spending my money on it. Yukon Denali is much preferred.

    Reply
    1. There’s a reason the interior looks so dark in these press photos. That’s because that particular area of the interior will be littered with cost-cutting hard plastics, which they don’t want you to see. It may look more flashy than the Yukon Denali overall, but when you get into the weeds, the Denali will have the craftsmanship luxury buyers expect.

  12. I will not say a word about the exterior or interior of the Wagoneer since this is a concept vehicle. However, what I can say is that it looks very promising, and is a good indicator of the production ready version. A few things I’m skeptical about this upcoming vehicle is reliability, as FCA has been having many reliability issues with many of their products (Ram 1500, Pacifica, Chrysler 200, etc). Also, General Motors has a huge advantage right now in the full size SUV space. The new GM SUVs represent the state-of-the-art for General Motors interior design and are a massive leap forward compared to prior generations, and have already made the new Ford Expedition’s cabin look dated by comparison. The Grand Wagoneer is an exciting new addition to the full-size SUV space, but FCA has a lot of work to do if they want to compete against General Motors in this segment.

  13. According to multiple sources, this thing will easily tip the scales at $100k+. The corporations keep raising the prices, people keep agreeing to pay their outrageous prices, so the prices keep ballooning out of control.

    In 20 years, a micro-CUV could cost $50k+.

    1. Inflation will rise to meet it. The overall price growth of vehicles, when compared to inflation, isn’t that catastrophic.

    1. I would respectfully disagree, the user interface screen in the new Suburban and Tahoe definitely does not look tacked on. I like that the user interface pays a resemblance to the C8 Corvette’s user interface screen but angled more traditionally at both the driver and passenger as opposed to the driver focused display screen and cockpit of the C8.

I really liked the original Wagoneers and had high hopes they would bring back some of the original charm. With the popularity of SUVs, I’m sure they’ll sell these, but I honestly don’t think it will eat into GM’s market share. Guess we’ll see!
