The return of the storied Ford Bronco nameplate has been a long time coming for Blue Oval fans, so they are understandably excited that the nameplate recently returned on a boxy, capable off-roader befitting of the brand.
We think some General Motors enthusiasts would be equally as excited to see the GMC Jimmy nameplate return as a body-on-frame SUV with simple styling, big tires and an abundance of upgrade potential – especially if it were to look like this rendering from a GM fan.
This rendering was done by amateur artist c_zr1 on Instagram. Intended to look like a modern-day version of the second-generation GMC Jimmy, this fictional rig blends vintage bits like the truck cap, window openings and narrow windshield with newer elements like the current-day GMC Sierra HD grille and front fascia, Sierra HD AT4 lower grille, and tow hooks, AT4 wheels and AT4 badging.
The designer says they envision this imaginary GMC Jimmy as having a 6.2L L87 V8 engine with GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission, although one of its supercharged 6.2L V8 units would also be available. Fans might already be happy if GM were to ever actually build a modern, two-door off-roader such as this, but we think they’d probably mob dealerships if these were the actual engine options, too.
While GM is not currently working on a modern version of the GMC Jimmy (that we know of, anyway) the upcoming GMC Hummer EV will place an emphasis on off-road capability and will be offered as both a pickup truck and SUV. We also know the new EV will feature boxy styling with a small greenhouse, removable roof panels and other throwback features.

This is a great idea for GMC to do a full size 2 door Jimmy, since Chevrolet messed up the Blazer return with a fwd cross over.GMC can have something very unique to the brand. Better get busy on it before FORD beat you to the market with something like this as well think a 2 full size 2 door SUV Raptor
All you have to do is look at the pricing that the older Jimmy and Blazer (not the S-10,S-15 models) are selling for. Their values have skyrocketed.
although the s-10 blazer will also have a place in people’s hearts.
Absolutely yes. As a previous 4 time owner of Jimmy and Blazer I would welcome it. GM get moving or Dodge and Ford with their model Bronco/ Ram charger will do it.
They never stopped making the Jimmy or Bronco, they called Expedition and Yukon..
The concept is doable, 2.7 and 5.3 should be the engines also it should stay bare bones under Yukon if production should see the light of day.
Chevrolet should bring back the K Blazer and Dodge should bring back the Ramcharger
I still think GM would have been better served to make the Blazer or even the Trailblazer a mid sized durable 4×4 competitors to Jeep and Toyota. Going bigger like this while it will excite some, isn’t going to sell to the masses, and you have the Tahoe there anyways which could be optioned out to scale the back-roads of the Mojave.
I own a 1984 K5 Blazer and it’s a river rat.I hate Jeeps and side by sides(junk) that I still pull out of the river.Bring that stuff back! It needs a 6.6L V8 for sure like the #1 4X4 of all time:1972 K5 Blazer 400 small block,unstoppable.
I had a 94 and a 96 both diesel . Loved them both. The engines were not so great but the trucks were fabulous. Would buy another if GM would actually make one. Had A full size 79 and original 76 Bronco also so I guess my two door will be a Ford.
I would normally say no for this idea, but I don’t really care for suv’s or cuv’s. With that being said the rest of Americans clearly like and want more SUV’s and cuv’s. I just don’t know what GM would offer that the wrangler or bronco don’t offer….. maybe big v8… or an EV option built off the Hummer pickup??
I get the idea. I’m all for it, especially with the Bronco’s revival…
…But that is the most god awful render I’ve ever seen. Who ever thought of that one needs their photoshop card revoked.
If GM can figure out how to make a bumperless truck, they could expand that puny grille, lol.
GM needs to produce a true off-road capable SUV since the new Blazer is simply another mind-numbing CUV and most of the other models are the same. With this being said, if GM does make a true off-roader, they will be bringing up the rear AGAIN, as all other brands already have their models on showroom floors or they will be there very shortly (Ford Bronco).
Barra and her crew are more focused on having 37 forgettable CUV models and new & expensive EV tech. Anything other than those two markets get placed on the back burner. As a loyal GM fan and consumer, it is a bag over the head…punch in the face.
Lastly, if a model like this is in the works, do not go retro. Ford has already done it with the new Bronco. Here’s an idea, stop being dead last to market new models and be first for a change. Always bringing up the rear is not a good look. It’s embarrassing.
I agree, be revolutionary, functional, off-roader. Something maybe no ones ever seen
Having owned full size (’78 Ramcharger, ’89 K1500) and mid size (’98 ML320, ’02 Envoy, ’16 Canyon), the mid size would be best all around for a trail runner / rock crawler if set up right. 2 wheel bases of about 110″ for a 2 door and 117″ for a 4 door and wheel wells that fit std 33″ or 34″ tires would be perfect. Oh, and no road grader air dam like on my Canyon.
Vent windows: nice, but the artist seems to have hewed too close to the original Jimmy/Blazer design, or at least the second generation one.
Just rebuilt the engine on a 2000 Jimmy Diamond edition… The midsize is the way to go… The S10 jimmies are able to get to places where the large trucks can’t make it…. Maybe a awkwardly placed tree or a mountainside the smaller vehicles will be able to get further.
Owned 5 different 69-72 Blazers/ Jimmy’s , still have a 69 K5 350 granny low . Plows through backroads like a tank , never let’s me down . Like their idea of a newly engineered retro but must stick to 69 body style. Original 1st year. Lift it a bit , new suspension and Bob’s your uncle ! Winner right there. Also own a 05 Jimmy ZR2 Highrider, love it as well , the 4.3 Vortec has never failed me but gobbles fuel outrageously
Make it just like this and I will buy one.
Put all the suv side by side excluding Jeep Wrangler and the new Ford Bronco you can hardly tell the difference.30 40 years ago the trucks were different once they put the brand on the SUV they all looked the same. Bring back imagination to engineering.
YES…..YES….YES!! It would certainly bring me back to buying a GM product again.
The K series Blazer transitioned into the Yukon/Tahoe so they have always been there. The model that is missing is the midsize S10 S15 Blazer /Jimmy version which was cancelled in 2004/5 Even though it was obvious that there was huge market demand witness how many frame on midsize V6 4x4s have been sold by the competition since 2006 Jeep Toyota VW Volvo Kia and Hyundai have made billions out of the vacuum GM left in this segment.
Once again GM repeated the mistake they made in the sixties when they abandoned the direction of the Nomad etc and created woosed out Station wagons out of cars. Ignoring that the original station wagons hand built to take folks from the train station to the ski slopes. Were in fact the first SUVs which are what the public have always wanted but the morons running the big car companies have always failed to see.
So once again GM does not see the hand writing on the wall and offers nothing in that mid size frame on 4×4 based on the Colorado.
While Ford has finally decided to compete with the New Bronco.
