GM Officially Launches The Chevrolet Onix RS In Ecuador

Although it reached local dealerships in the first half of August, General Motors has just officially announced the new 2021 Chevrolet Onix RS in Ecuador – the third country in South America to receive this version of the subcompact car after Colombia and Bolivia. The company thus corroborates our recent exclusive report stating that the Onix RS will expand its presence in said region during the last four months of the year.

The Chevrolet Onix RS strengthens the offer of the second-generation model in the Ecuadorian market, where only the sedan version was initially launched. The sporty looking Onix RS variant introduces the five-door hatchback body to the country, adding a more radical image seeking to attract a new generation of customers to lead the largest volume segment of Ecuador and the entire region.

“The new Onix will not only lead the market in connectivity, safety and technology, but it will remain the most competitive car in the segment,” said Chevrolet Marketing Manager in Ecuador, Oswaldo León, in a press release. “The RS variant represents a new alternative for those who want to stand out with a stylish vehicle,” he added.

Manufactured exclusively at the Gravataí plant in Brazil, the 2021 Chevrolet Onix RS introduces the brand’s sporty design cues for the first time in the entry-level segment. This all-new trim level reinforces the Onix’s youthful approach by adopting a mesh-pattern front grille, an aerodynamic body kit and blackout trim. In addition, it has a specific black cockpit with some contrasting elements in red.

Like the rest of the model lineup, the Chevrolet Onix RS is equipped with the 1.0L turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 115 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque, which is mated exclusively to a five-speed manual transmission – the only mechanical distinction for the Onix RS.

The new 2021 Chevrolet Onix RS is now available throughout the Chevrolet dealership network in Ecuador with three body colors: white, black and red. It includes segment-leading features such as a high level of connectivity with the brand’s latest infotainment system and OnStar 4G LTE with a Wi-Fi hotspot, as well as many safety systems. The suggested price of the Onix RS in Ecuador is $19,999 USD, which serves as the official currency of that country.

  1. Does this compare to the Sonic size wise? Interesting that it has a manual trans. Hard to believe the world taste in cars varies so much.

  2. The Onix is 4 inches longer and a few inches shorter, same width as the Sonic. The Onix’s curb weight is about 500lbs less than the Sonic which has to translate, in some degree, to a less refined ride than the Sonic. I would like to see photos of the Onix subframe assembly on a lift.

Every time there’s a post about the Onix someone say “bring it to the U.S.” Which will never happen… and that’s a good thing. GM has a few great options developed with Korea that are much more refined than the Onix.

    1. The Sonic was a pretty outdated platform though, so it’s possible that the ride won’t be any less refined.
It’s a shame we’ll never see these vehicles around here.
