General Motors’ crosstown rival, Ford Motor Company, recently announced that production of the all-new F-150 is now underway, with the first units slated to arrive in dealers in November. Additionally, Ford dropped a few tidbits on the upcoming all-electric Ford F-150, which is set to arrive in mid 2022.
Ford recently made a $700 million investment in its Rouge Complex production facility, which includes construction of the new Rouge Electric Vehicle Center set to build the all-electric F-150.
“The electric F-150, which is undergoing tens of thousands of hours of torture testing and targeting millions of simulated, laboratory and real world test miles, will be more powerful than any F-150 available today and deliver commercial and personal customers the lowest expected lifetime total cost of operation among F-Series trucks,” Ford claims.
Specifically, Ford says the new electric F-150 will provide a 40-percent operational savings over the lifetime of the vehicle when compared to a traditional gas-powered vehicle. What’s more, the Ford F-150 EV will come with dual electric motors, providing more horsepower and torque than any F-150 on the market, as well as the quickest acceleration and big towing capacity to boot.
The all-electric F-150 will also debut new technology, such as mobile power generation, while over-the-air updates will keep the improvements rolling in. Finally, a front trunk will add to the electric Ford F-150’s available cargo room.
General Motors has its own all-electric pickup on the horizon, namely the GMC Hummer EV, which is slated for a reveal on October 20th. Output will range up to a ground-pounding 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque, with top trims rocking three electric motors to lay on the juice. Under the skin will be the GM BT1 electric vehicle platform and Ultium battery technology. Production is expected to commence in the fall of 2021.

Competition is good, but there is no doubt GM is leading in EV tech among the big 3.
Agreed
I’m sure it will be fine but it’s important to note that unlike the trucks from Hummer, Tesla, and Rivian, Ford is essentially bolting a battery pack / electric motors to an existing, albeit heavily modified ICE platform. Like the other automakers that have gone this route (including GM with it’s Volt and Bolt models), it’s certain to have weight issues as well as range & packaging limitations. Since the F150 platform isn’t entirely scalable, Ford is also likely going to need eat this cost of this to keep the price down for customers.
I think it’s pretty naive to think GM doesn’t have an electric Silverado in the works. I think GM’s plan works better than Fords because an EV Silverado doesn’t have to be an everything truck. That duty can be split between it and the Hummer.
Yea but Ford also has plenty in the works. Including an EV Ranger, and upcoming EV Maverick. It is also rumored that Ford has a EV El Camino/ Ranchero on the way. All these trucks have been spy shot rolling around.
Ford doesn’t have a 30GWh battery plant to support a large roll-out of EVs, GM does/will.
Also an EV Mustang too
Ford pulled off one of the greatest stunts when they pulled these railroad cars with their EV F150. Since there isn’t any rolling resistance between steel wheels on steel rails it was easy to move the cars. Their engineers pulled off a good one there.
Ford 150 like most electric vehicles will cost half as much as a comparable gas F150; but what Ford doesn’t say is how much a gas powered F150 cost compared with what a F150EV would cost out or how long does it take to fully recharge it’s battery and how many miles before the electric F150’s battery would need a replacement.
Nobody is thinking to themselves when cross shopping Ford, Chevrolet & Dodge/Ram trucks “Gee, I should also go look at that Hummer suv for my pick up truck purchase”. They don’t go look at Jeeps either. Silverado needs to be at the forefront of F-150 & Ram in buyers minds. I think Chevrolet/GM has dropped the ball on this one.
Not that a Hummer isn’t a good idea or that it won’t be a good seller. I’m sure like the Jeep it will. It’s not however what most consider a truck. Chevy needs to get their truck program together and leapfrog the competition. It’s been a mess for far too long.
Do you really think GM doesn’t have an EV Silverado in the works? What would be the point of showing it now? The Hummer makes news, the Silverado will sell volume. Most of the things shown with the Hummer would be beneficial to a Silverado in a different package. Sure you wouldn’t need a removable roof, doors, 0-60 in < 3 sec., etc… But power, handling, flexibility would be important to a Silverado. We know the Hummer is built on a BT1 architecture which is just a body on frame. So any body could be on top.
The Hummer makes all the news and the Silverado just sells volume? You kind of made part of my point. It’s the Silverado that needs to be making all the news in order to sell the volume. It needs to be at the forefront of people’s minds when looking for an electric powered truck. The Silverado for far too long now has been late to the party on nearly everything. It’s not the truck leader it once was and it Needs to be for GM to even fund things like a Hummer. The Hummer should just be icing on the electrified cake.
Don’t think I can live without the sound of a V8.
Already drive a Volt. If I want a V8 sound I can get a grandkid to make it. I have spent $40 for gas in the last 12 months, havent been to a gas station since February. When a viable ev truck comes along I will certainly look at it. Btw, it cost me about 4 cents a mile to power my Volt on electricity.

A friend has a 4 year old Ford e-fusion, and the thing is in the shop for one thing after another – first the charger in the car didn’t work for 2 months while FORD figured out how to fix the old one.
Then his 4 year old daughter pulled the handle off the outside of the door.
Now the car, at 25,000 miles is starting to make strange noises…
I know Ford must be trying to copy Tesla’s famed (UN)reliability, but I wonder how much importance I should attach to a 1,000 hp power train, when they can’t get a basic plug-in-hybrid to work..
I can’t believe there is a super huge market for a 1,000 hp pickup, and certainly not among work truck fleets who you would think would be a natural for an electrified power train. For them reliability is key – but I’m sure their Green Eye Shade accountants are looking at other products than FORD until they get their reliability up.
Like I said two years ago. If Auto Makers can make EV Pickup Trucks that actually serve the purpose that “Real” Truck owners need them for, ICE will begin a fast clip death toll. If you can prove how much money it will save Truck Buyers, they will also purchase other NON Truck EV’s. Then word of mouth will spread quickly and Legacy Auto Makers will have no choice but to do a 180 and pivot to EV Vehicles only.
Why are we talking about sh*t Fords on GM authority? Who cares about comparisons. GM authority for GM talk only not sh*tbox Fords!
Why am I finding this article on the first page in the “Category: GMC Hummer EV” page on the day of the Hummer EV launch?
Is there any class left on this website?
It’s pretty pathetic when the troll is on the payroll!
