Chevy Camaro ZL1 Challenges Porsche 911 Carrera S To A Drag Race: Video

Power versus lightness – it’s a battle as old as motorsport, with both camps marking major victories over the years. The battle continues today, with no clear-cut answer as to which side can claim dominance. And that’s why we settle such disputes on the track, as seen in the following drag race video between the Chevy Camaro ZL1 and Porsche 911.

First, the Porsche. This particular model is the 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S, which produces an underrated 443 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, with even more output available with an onboard overboost function.

In the other corner, we have the Chevy Camaro ZL1, which challenges its Stuttgart opponent with the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4, producing 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

That’s a lot of muscle, besting the Porsche by a considerable margin, even with the 911’s over-boost activated. That said, the Camaro is also 500 pounds heavier, and it mounts its blown ‘eight up front, whereas the Porsche places its twin-turbo 3.0L flat-six over the rear drive wheels. Of course, there’s a pretty big price difference worth mentioning here as well, with the Porsche starting at a stiff $113,300, a figure that’s well on its way to doubling the Chevy Camaro ZL1’s starting price of $63,995.

So then – what we have here is a contest between big supercharged muscle, and high-dollar German engineering. The question is – which will take the win in a straight line?

To find out, the reviewers take part in a few spirited “experiments.” The first race is from a dig, with launch control turned on for both vehicles, followed by another dig race, but with traction control turned off. Finally, the racers finish it off with a roll race.

So then – what are your predictions? Can the Chevy Camaro ZL1 overpower the Porsche? Post what you think will happen in the comments, and then hit play.

    1. You are on drugs!!! GT2 RS has the second fastest time. Plus the fact that a Porsche will increase or maintain value way more than a GM will ever!! Give me a euro car any day over a GM!!

  2. For the money Camaro, Porsche for looks. Besides a tune for the Camaro and you’ll run down the 911.

  4. The laws of physics wins here… And the no-boost-interruption DCT helps tremendously on a turbo engine too.

  5. It’s called “chubby” “husky” ZL1. If you can’t get all that HP to the ground without slipping down the road, a school bus will beat you… The ZL1 is a road course set up not a 1/4 mile set up. It gets embarrassed at test and tune all the time. It has to make up the difference up top but it’s too late, runs out of track. Example; I have 4th gen SS Camaro with hi-performance mods including rear end set up for traction, I beat Porsche’s and the ZL1 at the 1/4. Keep in mind, I have 5.7 LS1, factory 327 bhp and now 457 bhp but only 3,400 lbs No way I can compete on a road course with either, but I don’t do road courses… GM honors a HP to weight ratio, I don’t. Now, once the ZL1 puts on M/T slicks, he wins…
My point, GM needs to take care of all the spin.

  6. That fancy, expensive Porsche was only a little bit faster than the 500 lb heavier Zl1. Respect the Camaro 😁

  10. Porsche Carrera 911 S costs over $130,000 CAD new, the Camaro ZL1 costs about $75,000 CAD new. You could literally buy 2 Camaro ZL1’s for the price of 1 Carrera S. Keep your Porsche, I’ll take a Camaro and use the rest of that money elsewhere.
