Competitive Sales Comparison

Buick Envision sales during the second quarter of 2020 enabled the model to remain in third place in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume. Leading the pack were the Acura RDX in first place as well as Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class and GLB-Class in second. The RDX delivered 3,716 more units than the Envision, while the two Mercedes-Benz models combined outsold the Envision by 1,646 units.

The Envision outsold the Lexus NX, Volvo XC40, the all-new 2020 Lincoln Corsair, which replaces the now-discontinued Lincoln MKC, as well as the Audi Q3 – an all-new model. The Envision also outsold the BMW X1 and X2, as well as its own corporate cousin – the Cadillac XT4 (see Cadillac XT4 sales), and the Infiniti QX30.

From a segment share standpoint, the Acura RDX held a 19 percent share and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class and GLB-Class, combined, held 16 percent. The Envision and NX each held 13 percent. All other contenders had less than 10 percent each.

It’s worth noting that combining the Cadillac XT4 with the Buick Envision gives GM a combined market share of 20 percent, which is higher than Acura’s 19 percent.

The luxury C-crossover segment contracted nearly 11 percent to 60,114 units in Q2 2020.

The GM Authority Take

The COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted Buick Envision sales during Q2 2020, which follows a 9 percent drop in Q1 2020 and a healthy 11 percent growth in Q4 2019. We posit that the drop was the result of the following two macro factors:

  • Sub-optimal supply: COVID was first to impact China in late January/early February, resulting in suspended vehicle production. As a result, the U.S. ceased receiving shipments of the crossover, depleting the supply of the vehicle in the U.S., where COVID struck in mid-March.
  • Lower demand: stay-at-home orders from the COVID-19 pandemic, along with negative impacts to the economy, resulted in lower demand during the second quarter.

These two events combined to create a “perfect storm” scenario for reduced deliveries during the quarter.

Looking ahead, the Envision will be completely redesigned for the 2021 model year. It will share its E2 platform with the Cadillac XT4 and will launch in early 2021. The same model will be sold as the Envision S in China.

  1. in a previous article, you compared buick encore sales with mainstream brands.

why are you now comparing buick envision sales with luxury brands?

    1. Steve, that’s a great question.

The Encore’s positioning is closer to mainstream models in the mainstream B crossover segment while the positioning of the Envision is in line with the C crossover prem/lux segment, both in terms of product, pricing structures, transaction prices and customer profiles.

      1. in 2020, a true luxury/premium brand wouldn’t and shouldn’t consider selling a $23K vehicle.

  2. Not bad. Now just wait till that all new Envision comes out.

And because this site seems to be messed up with the posting and comments (where the heck did the security thing go??) and commenting on someone’s post under “Reply” only seems to go into yet a new comment, I will make a comment about what steve asked above:

Buick is a better brand than nearly any import brand. Buick is closer to luxury than mainstream. Buick is a very direct competitor to Acura, Lexus and Infiniti. I sell Mazda and Volvo now and have been there for over 5 years now. Mazda is certainly no Buick and Volvo is on par with Buick, but without the reliability.

  3. Dan bering is right. Something is screwed up. Very frustrating to write a well thought out comment and have it evaporate.
