To the surprise of many, General Motors has just revealed the all-new Buick Electra Concept at the 2020 Beijing Motor Show. The concept is an electric crossover that showcases the brand’s vision for a new generation of zero-emission vehicles. The Electra Concept is the first sample of a Buick vehicle riding on the BEV3 platform and using GM’s Ultium battery system, which will spawn at least two production crossovers for the brand between now and 2025.
“Building on Buick’s proven leadership in electrification, the Electra represents the brand’s ambition to bring together beautiful styling and intelligent connectivity in the new era of zero emissions,” said Executive Director of Buick at SAIC-GM, Molly Peck, in a statement. “The advanced Ultium battery unlocks the exciting new possibilities for what future EVs will look like. The Electra fully leverages state-of-the-art technology to set a new standard for future EV design and personal mobility,” she added.
The all-new Buick Electra Concept showcases the brand’s next-generation design language for electric vehicles called “potential energy,” which introduces clean, minimalistic styling inspired by a space capsule. The concept vehicle combines the athletic look of a four-seat crossover with the design of a Gran Tourer, giving it a bold and innovative appearance.
With organic lines and sculptural surfaces throughout its body, wheels and lighting elements, the Buick Electra Concept’s exterior serves up an alluring mix of elegance and dynamism. Notable highlights include the illuminated front grille, sophisticated LED Matrix headlight signature, the butterfly doors and the large, innovative 23-inch wheels.
The Electra Concept’s cabin is inspired by a spaceship with a minimalist design that lacks a traditional instrument panel. A huge, floating curved screen is the central feature, along with a retractable steering column and suspended seats that create a zero-gravity visual effect. This futuristic atmosphere offers plenty of space for four people.
Utilizing the upcoming modular BEV3 platform and advanced Ultium battery pack, the Buick Electra Concept is said to boast a driving range estimated at more than 412 miles (660 kilometers) on a single charge. The powertrain consists of two Ultium Drive motors – one on each axle – generating a combined output of 583 horsepower (435 kW), allowing for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 4.3 seconds.
Although GM hasn’t yet disclosed this openly, the all-new Buick Electra Concept is expected to serve as the foundation for an upcoming Buick crossover currently in development, and that should hit the market during the 2024 calendar year. In fact, this model will be called the Buick Electra E4.

Buick should build a new EV Electra coupe and sedan, but God I hope it don’t look like this
Wow. I fondly recall how I would look at “concept” cars and think about the possibility of it coming to market just like the concept. And now, I look at this and can only hope and pray that they NEVER bring this thing to market. If they do, then for the love of god please don’t attach the Electra name on it. There isn’t one angle, not one piece, not one ounce of this concept that I think is even close to attractive. If this is the direction of the future Buicks, then it’s a very sad day for Buick.
I think it’s nice.
Concepts will always exaggerate features/design to show bold changes.
Look at how the Original Chevy Volt concept looked before the production model.
Then I’m also reminded of the Pontiac Firebird concepts.
You realize both cars you name or no longer in production, Right ???
It doesn’t matter what car I name, I was giving examples of concept cars.
Concepts typically have very little in relation to the final product, especially moonshot concepts.
Everything matters my point, GM is spending crazy money on outrageous concepts on models that are not great success for the company. I love going to Auto Shows to see concepts more than anybody. Today all Auto Makers need to be building concepts that can do 2 things 1st Build something we can buy and drive on the road 2nd Build something with the thought of it being a Serious success. If not that gives American Auto Makes another reason to say Sedans Don’t Sales Anymore. I get your point but the Makers need to rethink the concepts they are building, stop wasting money and time on something that’s not coming to market or be a success
@Roy:
The Electra has been gone a long time too. What’s your point?
First thing that comes to mind is that it’s so ugly that only it’s mother could love it.
The digital gauge panel is kinda cool, that’s about it.
Its okay IF the future production model just inherits the key stylistical features shown on the concept. The overal cartoonish proportions and tractor wheels are total aesthetic trash.
And here I assumed that the Encore GX and the Envision would be Buick’s EV vehicles, and they surprise us with this! 583 horsepower? (Yet they at this time dare give us a 3-cylinder engine?) I don’t care for the design (Buicks were typically beautiful) but I am sure it will be toned down for production. I think the Buick emblem on the front is too tiny, but I’m surprised to see the name B U I C K once again written on the back; did they change their minds? Look at the vehicle in the photo with the rear view mirror (or is that the dashboard screen?). That vehicle looks more reasonable. Has GM trademarked the name “Electra”? At least the name shows somebody at Buick is aware of their heritage!
given buicks “quality” the actual production version will be a weaker ev with less miles and less hp. and the interior quality will be that of the current bolt ev.
To me, the rear of this Electra Concept mirrors the rear of the Enspire Concept, so I would guess that they are thinking along those lines. But why do they keep teasing doors that open untraditionally (going back to the 2007 and 2013 Riviera Concepts with gull-wing doors)? Are they afraid to pull the trigger on a feature like that?
I am having a very hard time imagining the new Buick face from this….am I the only one?
Look at the concept for the Buick Velite 7 that leaked in 2017 and then the final product. Very similar lines aside from the color grille to this new concept.
Momolos: I’m having a hard time imagining anything attractive coming from this.
It looks like the Cadillac Lyriq. It uses the same BEV 3 platform.
I’ll reserve judgement till I see the production version. This needs a lot of work to get it production ready. Also, I hope they reconsider the A pillar to roofline join. I HATE this look. It ought to flow smoothly in an arc and not be this angular join. In fact, there are too many hard angular elements to the design. It needs to be more curvaceous and even somewhat organic.
Dude, that’s awesome!!! The non-gullwing doors are very clever and may prove do-able, looks like a good solution to ever tighter parking spaces. Hey, it’s 2020; time to think big, and this does it. Personally I see a bit of the new hot Envision’s forward grill top tilt on it, but would like more body side sculpting perhaps with a subtle sweep spear. Just add pillow back seats a-la 1984 Regal Limited and sign me up! 😊
I knew the Electra name would reappear with the current (sorry) technology. I just thought the vehicle it appeared on would be more attractive.
Not a fan of this concept but only based on looks, The tech is there, but the exterior visuals are underwhelming. Would rather see what another Buick Electra Concept would look like from GM’s North American design studio. This one looks like a squished 2021 Buick Envision.
I cant stand when car companies use historic sedan names to sell SUVs. A new Electra crossover will NEVER be a classic like a big metal Electra 225
I’m still waiting for the Buick Oedipus to cover the other psychological side.
Better hurry up and get it into production. By 2024 we’re not gonna be doing much biz with “made in China” unless that Communist regime collapses on itself or changes course in a hurry.
