2021 Chevy Silverado’s Multi-Flex Tailgate Can Play Your Favorite Tunes

General Motors recently revealed the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500, and with it, the new configurable Multi-Flex tailgate system, providing official confirmation of GM Authority’s earlier exclusive reports. Just like the GMC Sierra’s MultiPro tailgate feature, the new Silverado’s Multi-Flex tailgate comes with a variety of configurable positions that add comfort and functionality. Additionally, the tailgate also offers the same Kicker sound system as an available accessory, providing an opportunity to crank up the tunes wherever you may go.

Just like the sound system offered with the GMC MultiPro tailgate, the system offered with the 2021 Chevy Silverado’s Multi-Flex tailgate operates independently from the truck’s in-cabin stereo, utilizing either a wireless Bluetooth connection, or wired USB connection. The system integrates directly with the inner tailgate panel, and pumps out 100 watts of sound thanks to two four-inch coaxial drivers and a small amp, which means it should have enough power for just about any outdoor listening experience.

Operating the system is easy – just use the built-in buttons to select the track and volume level desired. The system will also be rugged enough to handle whatever is knocking around in the bed, and thanks to to the system’s low-draw power supply, there should be enough juice to listen for hours. Once you’re done, simply fold the tailgate up, and the stereo will automatically shut down.

For any 2021 Chevy Silverado buyer interested in laying down some tunes at a campsite or outdoor excursion, this official accessory for the Multi-Flex tailgate seems like a perfect fit.

With this new functionality for the 2021 Chevy Silverado, we’d also love to see other features added to the Multi-Flex tailgate in the future. But we want to know – what would you add to list of features? 1. Good grief. More yuppie accessories, hot on the heels of the Tahoe/Suburban power sliding console lids. What’s next? A built in Viking range, and Sub Zero fridge? Where’s the tap system for multiple kegs? A deep fryer for chicken wings, etc.?? Remember when trucks were for work? Now, they’ve become $70K plus driveway trophies.

    1. Ignorant. You should keep thoughts like these to yourself.

      1. Why are my thoughts ignorant, Brandon? Isn’t the point of being able to comment, to share thoughts? I didn’t attack anyone personally, didn’t get vulgar, didn’t inject politics, etc, etc. My thoughts are apparently only relevant if you agree. Maybe you’re ignorant and intolerant. Smacks of politics. I just think options like this are silly. If you like them, you should order them on your next Silverado. I hope that you have a nice day, Brandon.

        1. My thought is the added feature is genius. I could see myself using this weekly if not daily. For starters if you don’t like the added options of speakers in tailgates and other features like it, simply don’t buy a high country or a Denali. Some people like to spend 70k-80k on a truck and use it for both work and play, so features like this are very useful. Speculating cause I don’t know you but judging by your tone and past experience with people like you, you don’t like change. Why would you care if they add the option or not if you do not like the option? Order a truck without the option. But for more tech savvy people, options like this are welcomed and in my case encouraged.

          1. I agree @brandon, this was a great move. At the end of they day, they exist to sell cars, and part of that is catering to as wide a range as possible. Don’t like it? Don’t get it. But all these features in trucks is a great way to have your cake and eat it too.

            1. What I think is great if you want a fancy truck you can get it, you can also get a real rugged truck from GM when others don’t engineer that work truck in anymore

            2. As far as appealing to wide range I agree. So why not offer a regular cab short box truck? Chevy will sell more of those trucks then this radio tailgate option.

    2. Yeah back when a bunch of your buddies road around in the bed waving flags, with once was was shot gun rack, now an AR-15 yelling Trump! Trump! The Chevy truck has changed for the better😀 I love my Yuppy truck sitting on 22” with a 4 inch lift.

  2. I’d like a rack like a work table so I can slide a piece of wood in the track, lock it, and cut it. Right now I have to hold the wood with one hand and saw it with the other. Perfect for a work vehicle.

  3. I think it’s a great idea, I’m always listening to music or the news while outside on the driveway or in the garage. I just hope this tailgate is an option on lower trims and not just the higher trim levels like they did the power up tailgate as a high country only feature.

  5. Looks like they’ve added lights with this package. I never noticed that before…

  6. Does the Silverado still offer the power lift gate with this multiflex tailgate? Or is it one or the other?

  7. Lol, a musical tailgate?!?! Really GM??? Really???? There was once a time when GM ran a smear campaign against the Ford tailgate in their commercials. Now according to GM, tailgate tricks are all the rage.

    1. Careful bud, Brandon and Byron will take this personally and attack you for it. LOL

      1. As will I. I think it is awesome. But, like John, “I just hope this tailgate is an option on lower trims and not just the higher trim levels like they did the power-up tailgate as a High Country-only feature.” It just strikes me odd that they are making all these great options, but only for the High Country/Denali owners that are likely to leave it parked all day in the executive parking lot, and not for the LT/LS/WT that actually go to the job site and would use the system. Alas, the rich have all the toys, even if they will never use them.

      2. Trust me, I know pal. If the shoe fits then let these guys wear it. Some of these guys will agree with anything GM does. I have yet to see a Sierra going down the road utilizing this multi-pro tailgate. People pretend to like the tailgate so they can have an excuse for paying a premium price and have something to hang their hats on.

  8. I believe the point the chevytruckguy was trying to make was all the new and improved options that are being offered on the new vehicles is driving the price past the point where many who REALLY need a pick up for work can’t afford it anymore. I think the tailgate speaker system is a good idea. What I would REALLY like to know about is GM going to install a device on my new 2021 that senses I have a bumper hitch in the receiver so I don’t damage my multipro tailgate if I drop the upper portion by mistake. (No, I’m NOT Stupid but mistakes happen) To me, that would be a PRIORITY over a couple of speakers. There are a couple of guy who sell a device like that but GM should make it come with the Multipro. People want “toys” and some are prepared to pay big bucks for them. You can’t blame the manufactures for listening to what their buyers want. I had to move up one trim level to the SLT because that was the only way to get Bucket Seats in 2021. Not Happy, but that’s Life.

    1. Why leave your hitch in all the time? It is removable. That’s called a free hitch where I’m from. Sensors add money to the price.

  9. GM should ran a pwr outlet cable from the radio along the floor mount to under the rear seat so that music lover customers can add an amplifier and a subwoofer.
This would be great as we would not need to pull the dashboard to access the radio to make that connection which can cause damage doing so.
Please give it some thought with a view to have in done in the near future.
    I AM A CHEVY LOVER.

    1. Calvin, I ran a sub in the back of my Canyon and just had to tap a speaker wire in the harness in the rocker panel cover and run a power line to the fuse box.

Might check out the wiring diagram as I would expect the full size truck offers a similar option.

I did two simple connections and bolted the Kicker sub under the back seat.

    2. Kicker sells a nice Amp and subwoofer for the Silverado from the Chevy dealer.

  10. Here is the deal here.

The speakers were an option in the GMC version for the last two years and no one complained.

It is an option here so you can get 5ge gate with speakers, with pout speakers or even without the multipro if you like. So what is the problem?

The key here is to offer things that sell and make money but not force it on anyone who feel they can do with out them. In my view there is nothing here to complain about.

The goal is to entice people to part with more money as options on a vehicle are where all the money is.

Now if they were forcing this on you then yes I could see a complaint.

  14. And how does this further differentiate GMC and Chevy?

  15. Hi Jeremy, I like to leave the “hitch” in because too many stupid drivers tend to roll into your back end and I would rather have them put a nice “DIVIT” in their bumper than mine. Did you see the ad for the small device two guys are marketing that fits on the receiver and will disable the small portion of the multi use tailgate from unlatching while there is something in the receiver. it is a cool little gadget. I am hoping GM will put them in as “Standard” on the 2021 models. Otherwise I will be buying one.

  18. I don’t see the point. Just buy a much cheaper, and probably better sounding, portable Bluetooth speaker and set it on the tailgate when you want to use it. Plus, you have the advantage of not having fragile speakers in the place on the truck where you load heavy objects.

  19. GM should install amber cab lights on all the Silverado trim, also all trim level should come with blind spot light on mirrors and dash panel as a matter of safety.
Most vehicle these days comes with blind spot lights as a safety standard.
