2021 Chevy Silverado Regular Cab Long Box Gets 2.7L Engine

The 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 was just announced with a variety of upgrades and changes, including the addition of the new Multi-Flex tailgate, as GM Authority was first to report. In addition, the 2021 Chevy Silverado Regular Cab Long Box now offers the turbo 2.7L four-cylinder engine option, boosting payload capacity.

Previously, the 2020 Chevy Silverado Regular Cab was only offered with the naturally aspirated 4.3L LV3 V6, which produces 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, and the naturally aspirated 5.3L L82 V8 engine with Active Fuel Management, which produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the newly-added turbocharged 2.7L L3B I4 produces 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque.

As such, the newly available Regular Cab Long Box model with the 2.7L L3B engine connected to RWD offers a payload rating of 2,280 pounds, up from the 2,250-pound rating for the 2020 model year. What’s more, this same model ups max towing capacity to 9,600 pounds.

In addition, the expanded availability of the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B engine allows the Silverado to boast a lower base price. For now, the exact MSRP is unknown, but rest assured we’ll report back as soon as that information becomes available.

“Additional testing and validation revealed the 2.7L Turbo possesses better-than-expected cooling performance,” General Motors states in a press release.

Another notable addition for the 2021 Chevy Silverado is the new Multi-Flex tailgate, which takes after the MultiPro tailgate offered on the GMC Sierra to offer six different positions suited to handle a variety of jobs. These include easier access to the bed, additional loading solutions, and even a standing workstation. The 2021 Chevy Silverado Multi-Flex tailgate comes with a total weight capacity of 375 pounds, and can be activated using the vehicle key fob, or via two tailgate-mounted buttons.

  1. bring back the regular cab short box

    1. Absolutely! Long bed probably only wanted by contractors? They never were good looking. Form follows function.

    2. People claim they want them and then manufacturers end up selling 6.
I love the idea of them, but would absolutely never buy one. Way too impractical. I saw a RCSB Tundra the other day and watched it go by as if it were a McLaren, kudos to that guy, but still not getting my money.

      1. Guess I’ll keep my 2014 rcsb and that’s it. Will never buy long bed or any extended cab version. I have no need for them and besides they are $5K more. Chevrolet builds them and exports them so what is the reason not available in U.S.? Never heard from GM why, only people’s assumptions about mpg and corporate rumors. Never criticized anyone about buying a huge truck. Why do others criticize RCSB fans?

        1. Bring back the RCSB !

    3. I heard this 2.7 turbo is an enlarged version of the 2.5 Iron Duke motor from the 80s with a turbo slapped on it. Not sure how well this will work as a truck engine.

  2. Would probably make a good part runner truck setup. Thinking about the Napa delivery trucks dealership delivery trucks and such.

    1. lol the 3 Napa stores around me use 2 door Yaris’ and little Transit vans for their local deliveries.

I’d say this configuration is better for anyone hauling 8ft materials, like plywood and lumber, drywall, copper and PVC plumbing, or anyone wanting a long tool crib truck cap

      1. I want a regular cab, long bed or short bed pickup in something other than white.

  3. That’s fine, but we should be allowed to order a regular cab with the 6.2l as well.

  4. The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado regular cab with long box will be getting the 2.7L DOHC-4v 4-cyl Turbo which means it’ll be taking names and kicking ass.

  5. Regular cab long beds all the way, no soccer dad crew cabs for me, now stick the 6.2 liter in them also and add two cylinders to the 2.7 liter.

  6. Now bring on Regular Cab Short Box with 6.2 call it SS make it look like the Redline and you’ll have something to boast about

  7. The truck is too heavy for a 4 cylinder engine. No way this thing will see 200,000 miles.

    1. That motor is built strong and ready for the torture. Trust GM with this motor

  8. GM should have introduced this 2.7L in the 2021 Colorado and Canyon trucks. Not sure why they always wait so long to introduce to other models. I would trade my 2.8L minimax on this setup in a heartbeat to get away from the emission problems the EPA introduced to that engine. Nothing like worrying if you will be on a vacation unable to get home because of a Nox sensor shutting down the truck. Kind of silly this engine built for trucks makes it into a Caddy before the midsized trucks. But hey that’s GM.

  9. Doesn’t sound appealing. I need a truck that will last. Its not like we are getting a good price on these trucks. Way over priced for a 4 cylinder with turbo? Nothing but issues.

    1. Did I read correctly? Did it say a 2.7L? That is not enough for a weed eater. Buy a ford or ram…….

      Reply
      1. Welcome to a brave new world. This engine is almost as powerful as the 5.3 and has greater payload. Ford and Ram are doing the same thing by the way. Small powerful more efficient engines are the future.

  11. I am a contractor and need a regular cab 8 foot bed but Chevrolet quit making them in an LT in the 1500, I am upset with Chevrolet I think the work truck is cheap looking and cannot get the option I want on it. They guit making a nice truck for the working man. Only yuppies and soccer mom’s can have a nice truck that they will never haul anything in.
    Shame on Chevrolet!!!!

  15. Sold my 2000 S-10 step side pick up that I bought new and it gave me no problem for 21 years and bought the 2021 Silverado 1500 2door long bed with the the L3B turbo 4. It is in my mind a perfect truck. The price was fair it came with a lot of options and it gives great mileage. It can haul anything I have and when I’m light on the gas peddle I am getting close to 27 MPG. I did buy the extended warranty 7 years or 75000 miles. If anything goes bad GM will fix it at no cost. The styling is of a custom truck and with some clean pinstriping I had done to it, it is nice. All i can say is Long live Chevy trucks!

I did purchase the extended warranty 7 years or 75000 miles that gives me piece mind. The styling is the best yet, I had mine pinstriped and it is a beauty!
