First introduced in 2018 at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, the Chevy Silverado Medium Duty truck line expanded the Chevrolet Silverado lineup to include new 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD models, with multiple configurations, wheelbases, and GVWRs to meet numerous vehicle applications, such as cargo hauling, emergency services, and more. Now, GM Authority has uncovered the best-selling Chevy Silverado Medium Duty configuration for the 2020 model year.
According to documents seen by GM Authority, the Chevy Silverado Medium Duty 5500HD 4×4 Regular Cab WT is the best-selling configuration for the current 2020 model year.
Demand is growing month over month for these vehicles.
It should be noted that what sets the 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD models apart are their respective GVWRs, with the 4500HD rated at 14,001 pounds to 16,500 pounds, the 5500HD rated at 17,500 pounds to 19,500 pounds, and the 6500HD rated at 21,500 pounds to 23,500 pounds.
Looking ahead, the 2021-model-year Chevy Silverado Medium Duty is expected to go into production November 30th. The nameplate is set for a few minor changes and updates highlighted by the addition of StabiliTrak as standard on all models, the addition of Neutral-at-Stop as standard across the line, and, as GM Authority exclusively reported, the addition of the FuelSense 2.0 transmission shift control calibration, which will be optional across the line.
Further updates include the addition of an upfitter switch kit as standard, which was previously only offered with the Emergency Service Package, as well as the addition of a standard exhaust brake, which was also previously only available on models equipped with the Emergency Service Package.
Further information on all the changes and updates slated for the 2021 Chevy Silverado Medium Duty truck line can be found at our intel page.
As a reminder, the Chevy Silverado Medium Duty truck line is jointly developed by GM and Navistar, and arrived in 2018 as a replacement for the discontinued Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick medium-duty trucks. Production takes place at Navistar Internationals pant in Springfield, Ohio.

How do i get one with a truck duty LSX 454 V8?
They are doing so well with this truck.
But they can do even better with a few updates. They need a dock height model (7500?) with up to 29,000 lb gvw and a optional gasoline engine on the 4500 and 5500.
I wish I could get a class super C motorhome built on this chassis.
I think that is coming. There are motohome equipment RPO’s in the order guide. The upfitters are probably working on bodies for the Silverado mediums as we speak.
Glad to see GM offering something in the fleet again. We all know that the white LCF in the first picture is nothing but a Isuzu with a bowtie on it.
The white 4×4 WT 5500 model (the best selling) is a common plow truck where I am.
I have a feeling a lot of updates were planned for 2021, but due to Covid and the strike they have been pushed back. ‘Dock height’ chassis/wheels and a gasoline engine are sorely needed. Maybe we will see a mid-2021 update.
In my area, the 5500’s are particularly popular with general contractors.
Cuándo llegarán a México
A ver cuando. Se necesitan. They look great, and have great capacity.
I have one of the first 6500’s I’d imagine. It was a GM demo truck they took to the shows when they were launching the line. It came with a 12′ aluminum dump body. Has a gvwr of 22960. I legally haul 6 ton and the truck has plenty of power, is super maneuverable, exhaust brake works great when loaded, it’s a 2wd single cab. Has all the available options for the 2019 model year. On the drive home, which was 600 miles the truck averaged 14-18mpg, towing or hauling it’s more 10-12 local which is pretty decent for what it is and combined with the 65 gallon tanks you can go a bit before needing to fuel up.
They need to step up their quality of interior finishes, a lot if easily scratched plastic. Very little storage room in the cab beyond 2 people as there’s little space for anything else. I’m 6’4 and could use the seat to go back another couple inches instead of having to sit basically straight up. As I said, it’s got every available option but a few are lacking. The backup camera is not as high resolution as even my older Ford, you can’t turn it on manually which on my Ford is nice just to check loads as your driving etc. The transmission will at times get confused as to which gear it wants and stumble between them, the trucks limited to 65mph which for most the time is ok but merging, lane changes and running on the interstate with a speed limit of 70mph which means everyone’s going 75-80 is sketchy at times. Even with the air ride, when empty it’s an extremely harsh ride. The mirrors do not extend enough to see much behind you. Lastly, it has to go in the shop as I’ve had it since January and have needed to add coolant 4 times. No signs of a leak so not sure where it’s going. Overall, I’d like to see a few improvements as mentioned but would also like a gvwr of 26k and the ability to tow more than 15k.
