Modern Chevy Suburban Rendered With Retro Style

General Motors unveiled the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban back in December, ushering in an all-new 12th generation. Indeed, the Chevy Suburban is currently the longest-running nameplate in automotive history, celebrating 85 years of continuous production as of the 2020 calendar year. With so much history behind it, it just makes sense to do a modern/retro mashup, just like this well-executed rendering from Instagram user @wb.artist20.

“Here’s my edit of a modern Suburban with late ‘70s style,” the post caption reads. “When I do these I like to imagine that I took the modern car back in time and I’m trying desperately to blend in so no one notices I’m from the future.”

The rendering starts by combining the modern 2021 Chevy Suburban body panels with a classic two-tone paint scheme, including a broad white section running down the flanks, sandwiched between orange above and orange below. The paint is complemented by retro-style wheels in a six-spoke design, with the outer wheel lip painted white, and the inner caps finished in polished metal.

More polished metal can be found in the trim, which rounds the wheel wells, the front fascia, the door handles, and the shoulder line. The bumpers are also polished metal, which adds a surprising amount of old-school appeal to this Chevy Suburban mashup.

Although the all-new 2021 Chevy Suburban brings loads of modern tech, comfort, and practicality, there’s something to be said about the retro goodness presented by this new rendering.

As a reminder, the 2021 Chevy Suburban rides on the GM T1 platform, and offers three engines – the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84, the 6.2L V8 L87, and the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax. Production takes place at the GM Arlington plant in Arlington, Texas.

What do you think, dear reader? Does this modern Chevy Suburban with retro styling themes do the nameplate justice? Let us know in the comments section, and make sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more Chevrolet Suburban news, Chevrolet news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

  2. Your should have put the 70’s front end on the 2020 model then it would look great

  3. I have to say, that is really great looking. Of course, I’ve always been a fan of two-tone options, even if in orange/white! I bet if GM made that it would sell out in limited numbers.

    1. Stark reminder of just how much better GM styling was back then. The new one is ugly in all trims including retro.

  7. Hills Hot Rods in Lubbock has been doing the old two-tone for a few years on the late model trucks for dealers and individuals.

  8. HORRIBLE!!!
What has been seen can not be unseen.
There is a Ford dealer in Ohio doing the same thing to new F150’s.
Some things need to be left in history books.
It looked like sh*t back then , still does!

  9. No need to go back to the 70’s, this “look” was available on Suburban’s until 1999. RPO ZY4 special two tone. GM would never offer this now, slows done the production process too much. They want to build’em fast and build’em cheap!

  10. Good old ZY4 two tone. I like it. Did they stop doing these because two tone is out of style or expensive to do?

  11. 🙋‍♀️I would take a one with the retro silver and green (80′ Silverado) or black and red (84′ Blazer)

  12. Two tone just don’t work on the new body styles in my opinion. Body lines force to much center color and the wrap around front fender carries the side color to the front of the vehicle. Old style wheels with hubcaps don’t help matters. Just don’t look right In my opinion.

  13. Just don’t work out on the newer body style. No defining lines to keep it on the side of the truck. Wrapping it around the front just ruins it in my opinion.
