Lifted Chevrolet Silverado Taken Out By Walmart Stop Sign: Video

Lifted trucks can be a lot of fun. Take them off-roading, and they’re in their element, bashing through muddy troughs and climbing steep inclines with ease. The thing is, adding a lift kit can make a vehicle slightly more difficult to maneuver around tight turns and narrow corridors, as evidenced by the mangled front end on this Chevrolet Silverado.

This video is brief, clocking in at a little over a minute in length, but it does show some of the aftermath of a collision between the lifted Chevrolet Silverado and one very stubborn stop sign. Shot from the passenger seat of a passing vehicle, we get a rotating view of the poor Silvy pickup perched on top of the sign.

According to the video description, the incident occurred August 2nd, 2020, in Columbus, Ohio.

“My husband and I had just gone grocery shopping for our family when we heard a huge bang and a large commotion when we walked outside we saw this craziness!”

By the look of it, the driver of this lifted Chevrolet Silverado misjudged a corner in the parking lot, cutting it too close and smashing into the stop sign. It’s possible that the driver lost control while driving over some wet bit of the parking lot, as judging by the puddles, it appears as though it had recently rained.

Regardless, the results are pretty clear. The lifted Chevrolet Silverado now rests on top of the stop sign, its driver-side front wheel jammed underneath it while bits of the suspension hang from underneath the wheel well. It looks like the driver and some of his buddies are milling around while a store employee snaps a few photos of the truck.

Meanwhile, the stop sign remains still standing. Oh, the irony.

So there you go folks. When it comes to lifted trucks, stick to the rocks and mud puddles, as parking lots can be dangerous.

    2. I purchased a Suburban of similar age which was already lifted – I just enjoy the way it drives and looks and yes, I’ve been off roading in a lifted suburban before. My lift is pretty close to what the guy in the picture has so I can speak from experience since my setup is almost identical in height and length to his. I am a responsible driver and have never had an collision in my vehicle (had a lifted suburban before this one so going on 7 years with no collisions). Not sure you know what you’re talking about. Additionally, insurance companies will insure any lifted vehicle but will NOT cover any parts you add to the vehicle aftermarket unless you get specific coverage for that . They are no more or less dangerous than any other 5,000lb vehicle driving on the road, it’s all about the driver. My son and I actually avoided a 5 car collision with significant injuries that literally happened about 3 car lengths in front of us because of my ride height so I’d advise you stand down before complaining about something you know absolutely nothing about. This country used to be about choice, and while I don’t use the suburban as my daily driver, I embrace my option to drive it whenever I like because *freedom*.

I suspect this guy just didn’t see the stop sign in his blind spot and was probably both driving too fast and cutting the corner too sharp.

The insurance regulators in most states determine of how they rate, what coverage is mandatory, how they manage their finances. There’s political-equity considerations (insuring poor people). In my state, there’s a uniform point system that defines “dumbass” which simultaneously caps rates. So no, it’s not your right.

When the body is lifted that high it has a lot of leverage over the suspension components so when an irresistible force meets an immovable object the weakest link is going to break meaning the standard suspension components. Maybe next time he’ll pay more attention to his driving than to saying “ hold my beer, watch this”!

    1. It’s a HD half-ton so its not doing any real work after that lift was added a minivan would have a better payload capacity. He put in a lot of work in to hide that with that with the 3/4 ton towing mirrors and debadging the truck so i’m guessing he’s ashamed of it. You don’t put 24″+ rims on any truck you want to take off-road as they are worthless. Long bed crew has the axle length of damn school bus so no matter what you do it’s going to be awful in the mud or on the trail.

I saw a gentleman’s comment on here about the integrity of GM’s steel. Well, I hate to be the one to say, but all steel is not what it used to be due to being recycled so many times. It can happen to any truck these days.

  30. Lifting a truck is asking for trouble. First, your axle and your drive are still at the same height as before so you can’t even get more real clearance if you go off road. Secondly, you have raised the center of gravity and increased the risk of an accident. Thirdly, unless you have notified your insurer of the modification you have voided your insurance. Fourthly, in most states you are also breaking the law by driving a modified car.

Umm, I’d like to see you rip a spindle off a solid front axle truck like what happens with IFS, as clearly demonstrated here.

Not saying you wouldn’t mess a solid axle truck up, that picture just shows why IFS isn’t heavy duty, no matter how GM tries to sell it. Well, they only try to sell it to light duty truck owners, because 4500’s and up are all solid axle…

    Reply
  40. Looks like a ball joint failure to me, the entire spindle is detached, and still bolted to the wheel.

Not surprising, when you jack an ancient truck up to the sky, put oversized wheels and tires on it, but don’t bother to make sure the suspension is actually in decent condition.

I doubt the sign had much to do with what happened—he’s just lucky it happened in a parking lot, and not on the highway.

A guy with two buddies in an old truck pulled up, and offered to “pull you through, but I might bend your bumper)…the look on his face when I suggested I could borrow the 2×6 in the back of his truck and simply put it over the hole and drive out was priceless.

So I’m supposed to believe that driving at parking lot speeds, meaning less than 10 MPH a stop sign was able to rip the wheel, axel from the A frame of the truck, ripping brake lines etc. Either he was moving at quite a clip, or the workmanship of the truck is crap. 1. “Yes, inconsiderate people will say “I want my right to bla, bla, bla.” But, as someone just pointed out “You can’t regulate STUPID!”

If you can’t regulate stupid, how are we going to stop traffic accidents? The root cause is the human, not the vehicle. Brand new $80K trucks have half the ground clearance trucks did 40 years ago, this is one reason so many are lifted now.

You do realize that the only reason we have all the extra mandatory safety garbage in cars is because people continue to refuse to use seatbelts, right? SUV’s are stupid heavy to try and keep occupants, not wearing seatbelts, from getting crushed in a rollover. Why do I GAF if someone doesn’t want to wear seatbelts and gets killed due to their choice? Hint: I don’t. I certainly shouldn’t be paying more for a vehicle, and mileage penalties for people that choose to not wear safety belts? Same for back up cameras, airbags, etc. Nice to have, but our vehicles would be substantially cheaper without them. And arguably don’t need them. If we did, no one would die anymore in vehicle accidents.

  95. This car is no longer the type certified car as presented by the manufacturer for certification, because of big modifications of safety relevant parts.

Didn’t the owner lose the right to drive this car on public roads?

Or how does the individual car certification work over there in USA land?

    1. Observer7,

It’s pretty obvious that the US is heading towards total anarchy. Regulations are being slashed or not enforced and the country is run by a band of criminals/kleptocrats. Americans are dying like flies, food banks are miles long and the country is quickly heading for bankruptcy like the ruler has declared multiple times before.

The outside world only has pity for this former power…

  96. Why not buy a real high truck in the first place instead of heavily modifying what is basically a passenger car with an open trunk accessible to each and everybody? Like an Unimog, for example. The right choice when you need a real work horse.

Or is that just for show purposes, reducing the sturdyness of th car?

Going to answer what I know, as you are wrong about these, utterly. Not saying I agree with the modifications, just saying I know some of the reasons and rules.

Utterly incorrect about lift. Normally done to clear larger tires, your axle to ground clearance will raise.

I would like you to show me some states that do not allow vehicle modifications. There are specific laws for specific states, but I can’t think of one that disallows all vehicle modifications. No aftermarket tinted windows at all? Come on, that comment doesn’t pass the common sense test.

  100. This guy was probably doing something he shouldnt have. As for having a lifted truck in the USA its not illegal some states have laws about how high your license plate is from the ground and some states have tip tests the truck has to pass to see how easily it can roll over. Some states don’t have any laws so no it’s not illegal to have a lifted truck. Whatever this guy did was stupid so who knows what kind of lift kit or homade jerry rigged set up he was using but if it was a lift from a reputable company this should not have happened.

  101. I’ll Stick with my Truck. I don’t have any problems on the road or off the road. As far as lifting trucks for going off road as long as it is done correctly then there is no problems. My Truck is only raised with a 3 inch body lift on the cab of the truck and a 6 inch lift on the bed of the truck to fit 40″x 17″x 16.5″ Ground Hawgs.

Normal person let’s max out these her torsion bars to the max so we can have a higher frontend…. mechanic- I feel sorry for you (looks like the both ball joints snapped to do maximum torsion or some idiots do it yourself put way to much torque on the ball joint and snapped one while the other followed or forgot to put the nuts on Clearly the knuckle separate from the ball joints and then hit this sign probably monkey see monkey do still a monkey with a wrench

  107. I made the same suggestion a couple of days ago…I suspect the lower ball joint failed, the oversized tire got caught under the bodywork as the oversized assembly moved backward, and the momentum of the truck let the wheel continue rolling backward along the frame, snapping the upper ball joint, and completely removing the wheel assembly…but it was implied that I didn’t know what I was talking about.

I wondered that too. Seen it happen more than a couple of times, but would be a heck of a coincidence to happen right where it did. Still possible.

  108. Am I correct in thinking that the entire front suspension was torn off of the frame and pivoted around? I wonder if the suspension was rusted out and weak. Also, how do you manage to hit something like that concrete-encased stop sign?
