Competitive Sales Comparison

GMC Canyon sales performance during the second quarter of 2020 keeps the midsize pickup truck in last place in its segment in terms of cumulative sales volume, behind the Toyota Tacoma in first place, new Ford Ranger in second place (see running Ford Ranger sales), the Canyon’s corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Colorado – in third place (see running Chevrolet Colorado sales), the all-new Jeep Gladiator in fourth and the Nissan Frontier in fifth.

It’s worth noting that the Ranger’s 25,008 deliveries were 60 units shy of the combined Colorado and Canyon sales total of 25,068 units.

The GMC Canyon saw its share of the midsize pickup truck segment shrink from 8 to 4 percent during the second quarter. By comparison, the Toyota Tacoma claimed 39 percent of the segment while the Ford Ranger enjoyed a 19 percent segment share, the Chevy Colorado and Jeep Gladiator took 15 percent each, and the Nissan Frontier saw a 7 percent share.

The mid-size mainstream pickup truck segment contracted 16 percent to 129,501 units during the second quarter of 2020, meaning that Canyon sales decreased at a significantly faster rate than the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The decrease in GMC Canyon sales in Q2 was not unexpected. In addition to a drop in demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we believe increased competition from the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator, as well as strong competition from the existing Toyota Tacoma caused Canyon sales to suffer. When combining Canyon and Colorado sales, GM’s midsize pickup offerings represented 25,068 deliveries for a 19 percent segment share, which is equivalent to that of the Ford Ranger.

TOTAL -42.48% 25,068 43,578 -39.33% 50,981 84,026

Canyon inventories were replenished during the first two months of the 2020 calendar year following the UAW strike at the end of 2019, which lasted 40 days and resulted in no units of the pickup truck being built or shipped to dealers. As a result, customers began to have less choice in dealer inventory during the final weeks of the 2019 calendar year, with some dealers experiencing depleted stock of fast-turning models. We believe that this sub-optimal availability also carried into the first quarter of 2020. Notably, Canyon production was idled yet again as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

In normalized months, demand for the Canyon outpaces supply, so it will be interesting to see how GMC Canyon sales fare in the near-term future, as inventory is built back up following disruptions caused by the UAW strike as well as COVID-19-related downtime.

About GMC Canyon

The GMC Canyon is a mid-size pickup truck marketed by GM's GMC brand. It is currently GMC's smallest pickup truck, slotting under the full-size GMC Sierra. The current model was introduced in 2015 and represents the second generation of the Canyon nameplate. It rides on the GMT-31XX platform shared with the Chevy Colorado, as well as the international-market Chevrolet Colorado/S10 and Chevrolet Trailblazer. As of September 2018, the GMC Canyon is offered only in the United States and Canada; it is not offered in the two other markets in which GMC does business - Mexico and the Middle East.

The 2018 GMC Canyon represents the fourth model year of the second-generation Canyon. The vehicle remains highly competitive in its segment, offering two gasoline engines and a diesel motor, which is a segment exclusive. As opposed to its Chevy-badged brother, the Chevy Colorado, the Canyon does not offer an off-road-specific model like the Colorado ZR2. However, the Canyon does offer a luxury-focused Canyon Denali model. Some of the biggest criticisms of the second-gen Canyon include a lack of various desired features wanted by many present and potential customers, including a moonroof, a sliding rear window, and an extreme offroad model.

The 2019 GMC Canyon represents the fifth model year of the second-generation Canyon. The vehicle sees new exterior colors and a new set of bright silver 17-inch wheels on the SLE model. Additionally, the 2019 Canyon gets new set of infotainment systems that represent the third generation of GMC infotainment systems, a second in-cabin microphone for the front passenger, a high-definition Rear Vision Camera on some models, UltraSonic Rear Park Assist, a heated steering wheel on SLT and All Terrain models, and 6-way power driver seat on some models. There's also a rearrangement of USB ports in the front and back.

A midcycle refresh for the 2020 model year is expected to bring revised front and rear styling along with interior and powertrain updates. There's also the expected introduction of the Canyon AT4 to replace the Canyon All Terrain. The GMC Canyon is built at the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri operated by GM USA.

  1. The GMC Canyon can be described with a single word.. BORING; it looks like something developed 40 years ago.. graft the nose of the Buick Envision to the GMC Canyon and see whether sales improve.

    1. I disagree and not just because I own one but I think the Canyon looks fine. But it and the Colorado are do for a new gen and that’s coming soon and hopefully GM brings out a win or they will be in big trouble. That being said the current twins have been out since 2015 and have held steady sales even with the increased competition.

  2. I’m confused wheres the news? The canyon has been dead last since like 2015. Which leads me onto my next point. The canyon gets outsold by THE EVEVN OLDER nissan frontier…… but GM keeps it in production for some reason. But the Camaro slips to 3rd and GM immediately wants to axe it…….. 🤦🏾‍♂️

    1. I think u better check ur info in 2017 they sold lots of canyons in ont

    2. The Canyon lives on because GM knows it won’t sell as well as the rest especially with the Colorado being basically the same truck for less and more model options.

The Camaro is dead last because GM abandoned it after the horrible refresh on the front and the visibility issue keeps shoppers away and Mustang is cheaper.

    3. Have you seen the 2021 Canyon? It looks really nice

  3. Well the Canyon sells lower volumes than the GMC. Hence dealers carry smaller inventories. This leads to the fact the plant shut down due to virus and a change over to the refresh model.

So if you check the dealers they have had very few trucks to sell and are just now getting the 2021 models.

The Camaro dies as it is a part of the Cadillac sedans that sell even less cars.

Also the price point on most GMC models is greater and makes them much more profitable,

The Camaro was to be the volume model but yet it only sells a 50,000 models with another 20,000 Cadillac vs the mid size truck that sells over 300,000 plus units. There is a big difference here also in development cost.

You can’t be sentimental or emotional to understand this.

  4. The twins falling apart isnt a good thing to GM. Better be working late in the next gen Colorado/Canyon.

  5. I bought a used 2016 Chevy Colorado, with crew cab, long bed, 4×4, and MiniMax diesel in 2018. I looked long and hard for the GMC Canyon before pulling the pin on the Chevy, because I wanted the higher interior trim of the Canyon. I would have had to go to Minnesota to get an equivalent deal to the Colorado available in my hometown.
The diesel Colorado/Canyon is a superior value, especially with the long bed which is nearly impossible to find in the competition. People who buy the others must not ever haul stuff like lumber or dirt bikes.

  8. This article doesn’t surprise me at all. GM quality and poor dealership service about put the final nail in the coffin on this truck. Axe it and put any new technology in the Colorado.

    1. Or get someone from GM Canada to show GMC in the US how to market them. GMC is on par — and has outsold — Chevy Trucks in Canada

  9. Try finding a Canyon in Northern California… I think there are 10!

  10. That’s what happens when you have an outdated product. Congrats GM on saving more money for the eltrics that nobody can afford.

    1. What exactly is outdated on them???

  11. My issue when truck shopping this past June was the price point. $48-65k for a midsized truck is absurd. I ended up with a high trim level Silverado for $34,8 out the door. I shopped three markets for the truck as well. Norther Nevada, NorCal and Oregon, before deciding on a full size instead because I just could not get a deal on the Chevy Colorado or GMC’s Canyon twin.

    1. What were you looking at? My SLE 4WD V6 crew cab with options was only 38k sticker and I got it discounted down to 35k our the door. Definitely could not find a full size with the same options for the price.

      Reply
    2. Mike I have a Canyon Denali with every option and sticker was $45 but I got it out the door at $39.

The only GM mid size at $50 $sticker is a fully loaded Diesel Bison. Even then you would be good to get it out the door for much less than $50k.

The real temptation was the fully loaded extra cab SLT Sierra at $43 out the door that was discounted $12k at years end.

Now if as you claim you can’t get a deal there Go to Laura GMC for a killer deal. Even with one way air fair it is cheap or they can ship it to you. Many do.

Love to see the mid size GM at $65k. Only a Jeep goes that high and it really is not mid size.

  12. Wow a GM vehicle and its sales are dropping like a rock? Reason? No Advertising support.
Typical GM slowly cuts back on the advertising, too many models, never enough budget.
I’ve sat in on enough Dealer Advertising Group quarterly meetings to know, its Core product only, that means Silverado & Equinox. Or in GMC’s case Sierra & Terrain – nothing else gets much media points
I drive/ lease a 2018 Canyon Crew, took all the nameplates off of it,has a front level and 33″ tires, looks good, but its surprising how many people ask me at the gas pump; What truck is that?

  13. GM is out of touch. I mean this is the same company that reintroduced the “blazer” as a crossover junk pile. Look at how ford blew the new bronco out if the park. Gm needs to fix their pricing. Trucks with stickers for 40k are selling for more like 34k. Resale sucks and depreciation is absurd. No more 2dr short bed or any type of performance truck is crazy. What idiot is running the show?

Gm should make a bison version of the Canyon the canyon is much better looking truck then the Colorado gm should drop the Chevrolet truck line and strictly make GMC truck line instead of two truck lines
