Competitive Sales Comparison
Chevy Silverado sales during the second quarter of 2020 place the truck in second place in its competitive set, behind the Ford F-Series (see Ford F-series sales), which led by 58,393 units. The Silverado was followed by the Ram Pickup, in third place, by about 5,000 units.
Notably, the Silverado overtook the Ram in Q1 2020 to reclaim its typical spot as the second best-selling vehicle in its segment. Despite the decrease this quarter, the Silverado continues to hold off the Ram, whose sales fell a steeper 34.5 percent.
What’s more, Chevy Silverado sales fell at a slower rate than the segment average during the quarter, as the full-size pickup truck market contracted nearly 22 percent, while Silverado sales decreased 14 percent. All models in the segment reported a contraction in year-over-year sales during the second quarter of 2020. Additionally, the Silverado’s corporate cousin – the GMC Sierra (see GMC Sierra sales) – saw sales shrink 5 percent – the lowest in the segment. The Ram Pickup posted the biggest drop at nearly 35 percent.

The GM Authority Take
It’s unfortunate news to see Chevy Silverado sales fall during Q2 2020 but it is not unexpected given the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on both, the economy and on the auto industry at large. The Silverado actually had a very healthy performance given the circumstances, with sales falling slower than its two primary rivals. It’s also great news that the Silverado continued to outsell the Ram for the second-place spot in the segment.
Sales across all three Silverado lines varied during the quarter, as sales of the Silverado 1500 (Light Duty) and Silverado HD (Heavy Duty) decreased while those of the Silverado MD (Medium Duty) saw an increase. We imagine that sales would have been even higher had it not been for the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
We expect Chevy Silverado sales to suffer in the third quarter of 2020 as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact GM as well as the industry at large. However, once the pandemic begins to subside, we expect to see sales of Chevy’s bread-and-butter truck to recover and continue the pace set in Q1 2020.

Waiting for some beerbelly talk about it’s interior, price and how it’s rivals are that much better….
Fix the Walmart interior for more market share!
Of course, short of inventory. Super high demand.
People are looking for crew cab short box here in Canada, but it’s hard to get one especially loaded truck.
Some of them can’t wait to tow their new travel trailer so buy 2020 Suburban before 2021 MY arrival.
Talk about losing that loving feeling; but the pandemic did cause markets to sink a bit across the board.. more commercials pushing the availability of the Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel which offers a great combination of performance and mileage from a 10-speed automatic transmission could be beneficial.
My thought? Why does Nissan even offer the Titan any more? Is it worth it? I question why Toyota even keeps the Tundra at the numbers they sell, but they are still more than triple the number from Nissan. However, I do find the Nissan to be a nice looking truck.
I bought a Silverado in July. The problem I experienced is there’s nothing available on the lots due to the factories being closed for 2 months due to COVID. I was lucky to snatch up a Trail Boss LT crew cab short box with the 6.2 v8 that was enroute to the dealer. I gambled by not driving, or even sitting in, a new Silverado. I love the truck, and I’m glad I took the risk. This is my first truck ever. I enjoy the interior. It’s utilitarian, not the plush and comfy city dwelling pavement pounder interior offered by other brands. I’m looking for a truck that works and doesn’t mind getting dirty. Not one that gets stuck in rush hour traffic, and never sees a dirty road. The Silverado does this well. I just wish I didn’t have to wait almost 4 weeks due to a lack of available inventory. Lack of inevitable would be why sales numbers are down. I expect to see an uptick in sales numbers in Q3.
Cool story bro. Anyway, the problem with your story is all the brands build basic and luxury versions of these trucks. I mean who buys a High Country with basic amenities being their top priority. The fact that you bought a Trail Boss with a 6.2 shows that you wanted features. You don’t need a lift kit or the 6.2 to get the job done. You could have gotten the 5.3 engine. You sound like a GM advertisement. The problem is the GM interiors are behind when compared to the competition and there is no getting around that.
Fix the ugly interior that has been around for a decade
Fix the outdated, boring interior that has been around for over a decade. I’m not buying a new truck that has the same interior has my 2015.
It’s not the interior, it’s not the exterior, it’s not Ford, it’s not Ram. Two words: AVAIL ABILITY. My store could’ve sold three times more than we did if we had them to sell. These GM Authority “articles” are all contrived and fake news lately
