Chevy Malibu Coupe Rendering Brings Elegant, Sporty Appeal

The Chevrolet Malibu nameplate was introduced for the 1964 model year, and in the decades since, eight generations have come and gone. The latest ninth-generation Malibu was introduced for the 2016 model year, but despite a refresh for the 2019 model year, the Malibu’s future is uncertain, given GM’s focus on AV and EV technology development and a general trend towards crossovers and SUVs among the buying public. Nevertheless, we think there’s plenty of appeal left in the Malibu nameplate, and to prove it, we drew up the following Chevy Malibu Coupe rendering.

Now, we should start by mentioning that General Motors currently has no plans to actually produce a new Chevy Malibu Coupe. Rather, we created this rendering just for fun.

From the off, our Chevy Malibu Coupe rendering should be somewhat familiar, with a recognizable fascia design and styling lines. However, our two-door enhances the factory look with a list of updates, the most obvious of which is a new two-door profile.

We decided to to go with a pillar-less door design, as it not only offers a sleek, stylish look, but also enhances overall visibility. We also think it looks fantastic with the Malibu’s sloping roofline, adding a sense of luxury similar to something like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe.

The profile also reveals larger wheels, which fit the wheel wells nicely thanks to a lowered stance, enhancing the Chevy Malibu Coupe’s sporting appeal even further.

The rear end gives us another view of the clean pillar-less profile, as well as a set of clear tail lamps. The updated tail lamps play nicely with the Chevy Malibu Coupe’s rounded rear end and trunk lid spoiler, while we would also expect a new, more aggressive exhaust system to announce the two-door’s arrival.

  1. Wow that looks really good!

  2. The rendering of the Chevy Malibu Coupe has absolutely no chance to reach production unless General Motors of China decides that they want the car which means like the Buick Envision, the Chevrolet Malibu Coupe would be an import from China because General Motors CEO doesn’t have the guts to give the green-light to such a project.

    1. China? Seriously? Check to see what other manufactures are assembled in other countries, i.e. POS Toyota!

  3. That looks really sharp! It’s too bad that GM is solely focused on CUV’s and EV’s.

    Oh well… 🙁

  4. The pillar-less window would never make it to production for safety reasons and rollover standards. The coupe would never make it to production because of who is running GM and today’s weird buying decisions that are based on what the media tells them they should buy, dealers herding consumers into more profit oriented trucks and CUV’s and the total reluctance of OEM’s to make what people actually want.

    1. Never seen a modern BMW or Mercedes? Pillar-less can be done safely. Will it be done by GM? Well, that’s a different can of worms to open.

  8. That Malibu coupe is awesome. If Chevy would make these, that’s what I would be driving instead of “Brand-X”. I’ve had a several Malibu’s ( mostly SS’s ) over the years but pretty much quit buying them when they dropped the 2-dr. Bring them back and I will be a return customer. Not happy with my Brand-X but I refuse to buy a 4-door sled.
I’m a Chevy guy. Silverado pickups, Corvettes (Sunday drivers) and a Brand-X for my daily driver. Come on Chevy. You’re losing customers.

Kia came out with. The K5. 2021 sedan with
performance packages. If the don’t do something GM that is they will be behind everyone and will have to play catch up to everyone

  10. I agree with the direction of the comments. I’m 6’3″ and much prefer 2 dr coupes to 4 dr sedans. As a mater of fact I can’t remember the last sedan I bought. They don’t fit. I love coupes with a strong engine and comfortable interior. I have been driving Suburbans the past few decades but finally tired of climbing up in them. Couldn’t find anything I really liked so I decided to purchase older and rehab them. Currently my dd is a 2008 TBSS. Love it. I would be very tempted with such a car as this coupe…with a strong power train. GM used to produce autos that we loved to drive. Now it’s different. We drive them because there isn’t a good choice…like there used to be. Everything is almost the same. Each model just another version of the smaller/larger one. Some of us don’t have a yen to drive pickups or small SUVs.

  12. Come on GM, get a backbone and build something we really want and need. A Malibu coupe would hit the button on something that’s been missing for sometime, since the Monte Carlo went out of production.

  13. Build it. GM needs stylish coupes and convertibles the competition is leaving us in the dark.

  14. Rendering looks awesome and makes one wonder. Shoulda, coulda, woulda,….I sure miss the bygone style, elegance, and grace, the car designers, engineers, and dreamers, could and were actually encouraged to create just a few years ago…and the big brass had the fortitude and imagination to go forward with. Unfortunately the name of the game is much different now. ($$$) American style and automobile heritage lost something along the way, due to many near-sighted factors, leaving car guys (and girls too), with the bland and common looking little crossovers we have now.

  16. Unfortunately the Chevy SS will likely be the last of the RWD sedans from GM. I’d love to see a Malibu coup come to life. Give it the cts’ drive train and call it a day

    1. Heck, take the underlying platform and powertrain from the Cadillac ATS coupe and apply the Chevy Malibu coupe body renderings and interior. That’d get us 2 V6 option and performance gearbox.

      1. @Dave

1: They already did that. It’s called the Camaro.

2: They don’t build ATS anymore.

  17. I like the idea but DAMMIT stop it with the damn giant slack jawed black hole where a grill should be. I’m not a fan of those wheels but that is an easy fix. Of course this is an exercise futility because GM would never give it a decent power train and it’s not an SUV.

  18. Please let it come also at least V-6 turbo with 8 speed transmission! I dont mind ift rearl or front drive, and please keep it on production for long time, im tired to see only SUV.

  19. Nope, no Malibu coupe, it’s not needed. A roomier Camaro is the best option today.

    1. Like a chevelle?
      Or a rwd new impala?

      Reply
      1. Not even that thought I’d love to see a VSS-R Chevelle or Impala replacement for Malibu.

The fwd coupe is history, Ford’s last US one was the 11′ Focus, FCAs was the 200, Honda just killed the Civic coupe with them not bothering to have a current Accord coupe.

The rwd coupes is where it’s at, the next Camaro just needs to be more practical for the sub $30k crowds, that’s how Mustang survived uninterrupted since 64′, it’s marketed as a commuter car despite the v8 models.

        Reply
        1. I don’t have a problem with a more practical camaro idea. But the mustang point since 64 was to be just that practical and have a trunk they mentioned this in a documentary for the 6th gen. In 67 the camaro was made to outperform the mustang. So I fear that the camaro will always be less practical. I see the the camaro as a affordable front engine vette and maybe GM could make a chevelle/impala and bring back the Buick roadmaster for a upscale version. 4 doors rwd v6 base v8 for muscle fans

            1. I know 😔
But we are also looking at a article for a 2 door 2 liter engine car which is less practical then the other options that I suggested which dodge is long in the tooth with there charger.for camaro haters this idea is fresh and less foolish then playing ketchup with a 3 car race with the wrangler and fresh new well thought out bronco that idk if you can do much better with well thought out ness. Or maybe I’m wrong no one wants sedans just axe them all. And go to war in only trucks and SUV’s

  20. Build it. They will come.

    Reply
    1. No, they probably wouldn’t.
They might be able to sell a few, but like the Camaro, it would have abysmal sales and would quickly face extinction.

      1. @ NATE

        Exactly.

If there was a market for Coupes there would be more of them on the market.

The Malibu will pass from production in a few years. GM is too smart to waste the multi- millions needed to produce a 2 door version so late in the Malibus life cycle to gain a handful of sales a year.

  28. I would like to see more on the Malibu coupe. Perhaps several engine opt’s. Maybe several trim levels with an SS opt’s at the top level with more than just a badge. GM really needs to keep the car enthusiasts happy. Otherwise they go elsewhere.
Asian manufacturers are trying really hard to capture that crowd.
Camaro’s are cool but NOT a family coupe.

  29. If they ever entertain the thought of building this, then they better build a new Monte Carlo for me…..now that’s wishful thinking.

  30. Basically GM is out of the “car” business. They have decided to go the way of the dodo bird with cars. They only seem interested in SUVs and trucks. And they want all of them to be Electric……
They had one of the best sedans in the automotive market with the Impala – and they say it did not sell.. Well, if you don’t let folks know that you build great cars (read: advertise) then people do not know.. even Consumer Reports liked the Impala, and they hate almost everything American !!!
Yes they should have promoted the cars – instead they will give all of the business to the Japanese and Europeans.
    Let me re-think my portfolio….hhmmmmm …

    1. The Impala didn’t sell well because it was a large sedan. That’s a segment that isn’t selling well anyway.

GM (or any other company) doesn’t cancel products to be mean to people or to force you to drive something else. They cancel them because they don’t make them any money.
