The GM Authority Take

After registering its first sales increase thus far this year in June, Chevrolet Argentina sales decreased considerably in July. Once again, the ongoing economic crisis of the South American country stemming from and assisted by the COVID-19 pandemic caused problems for the Bow Tie brand’s sales volume. In fact, Chevy’s 52 percent contraction during July exceeded the 41 percent average drop suffered by the Argentine automotive market during the month. Among the reasons for the decline were newfound restrictions imposed on commercial activity due to virus outbreaks.

Only three Chevrolet models increased their sales volume in July. These were the Equinox, Montana and TrailBlazer SUV. Each of these three vehicles recorded their second consecutive month of significant increases, thanks to various discounts intended to reduce in-stock vehicles accumulated during the first few months of the pandemic. For its part, the best-selling Chevrolet Onix suffered a notable double-digit drop year-over-year, making it the second best-selling vehicle in the market behind the Toyota Hilux.

We expect Chevrolet Argentina sales to improve over the next few months thanks to the arrival of the all-new Chevrolet Tracker, which was launched in the market during the second half of July.

  1. One Camaro for the month? Why would they even bother offering products like that if the sales are so low?
They would sell far more of any of those models here, but wouldn’t bother offering them unless they could sell 50,000 or more.

    1. The U.S. is the primary market for cars like the Camaro, but the reality is that there isn’t enough demand in the U.S. alone to make business sense for these models.

To that end, every unit sold in international markets helps. The Camaros sold in these markets require no modifications and are typically high trim models (2SS with auto trans) with high ATPs and very healthy margins. Hence, every unit sold internationally keeps the Camaro alive.

Keep in mind that 1 unit in July is due to COVID (no availability and general sales issues faced by dealers). In other months, it’s between 10 and 20.

Finally, the Camaro is a huge image/halo car in South America. It is THE CAR to get in Brazil and Argentina, and other LATAM markets. If you tell someone in those countries that you have a Camaro, you instantly gain major street cred.
