2021 Chevy Blazer: Here’s What’s New And Different

Reborn for the 2019 model year, the Chevy Blazer is now a midsize crossover utility vehicle (CUV) that aims right at the heart of a very rapidly growing space. 2021 will mark the third model year of the Blazer, and there are several things that are changing compared to the 2020 model year. So, here’s everything that’s new and different about the 2021 Chevy Blazer.

Model Line

The 2021 Blazer does not see any changes to the model line, keeping with the trim level structure utilized since its introduction for the 2019 model year.

2021 Chevy Blazer Trim Level Hierarchy
Trim: L 1LT 2LT 3LT RS Premier
PEG: 1L0 1LT 2LT 3LT 1RS 0HD

Exterior

The only changes to the exterior of the 2021 Blazer involve the deletion of three existing colors and the addition of four new ones:

New colors:

  • Pewter Metallic
  • Iron Gray
  • Cayenne Orange
  • Cherry Red Tintcoat

Deleted colors:

  • Nightfall Gray Metallic
  • Graphite Metallic
  • Cajun Red Tintcoat

Interior

Inside, the 2021 Chevy Blazer sees three changes, starting with the addition of a urethane steering wheel as standard equipment on L, 1LT and 2LT trims. For the 2019 and 2020 model years, these trims included a leather steering wheel as standard. The remaining trims – 3LT, RS and Premier – continue with the leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Additionally, the 2021 Blazer also deletes one of the three Chevrolet infotainment systems previously available for the 2020 model year. The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium system with connected Navigation and 8-inch HD color touchscreen (IOT) that was available on 3LT and RS, while being standard on Premier, is deleted. In its place is the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system with connected Navigation and 8-inch HD color touchscreen (IOU); it is available on 3LT (as part of Sound & Technology Package) and standard on RS and Premier models. For the 2020 model year, the IOU system was standard on the RS trim, and not offered on any other trim.

Safety

The 2021 Chevy Blazer gains a significant amount of active safety features as standard equipment. That takes place via the new Chevy Safety Assist package, which is standard on the 2LT, 3LT, RS and Premier models. It includes the following features:

For the 2020 model year, these features were optional on the range-topping RS and Premier trim levels.

Mechanical

From a mechanical standpoint, the 2021 Chevy Blazer continues to be offered with three gasoline engines mated to the GM 9-speed automatic transmission.

2021 Chevy Blazer Powertrain
Engine Fuel Aspiration Transmission Horsepower @ RPM Torque @ RPM Axle
2.5L I-4 LCV Gasoline Atmospheric 9-speed automatic M3D 193 @ 6300 188 @ 4400 3.80
2.0L I-4 LSY Gasoline Turbo 9-speed automatic M3T 230 @ 5000 258 @ 1500-4000 3.47
3.6L V-6 LGX Gasoline Atmospheric 9-speed automatic M3V 308 @ 6600 270 @ 5000 3.49

There is, however, one small change to the drivetrain: the Premier model will now offer the regular all-wheel-drive (AWD) system for the 2021 model year, in place of the more advanced twin-clutch system offered for the 2019 and 2020 model years. That leaves the Blazer RS as the only model to offer twin-clutch AWD.

Additionally, the 2021 Chevy Blazer gains a new towing package for front-drive models with the with 3.6L LGX V6 engine. The package includes a heavy-duty cooling system and Hitch Guidance, finally enabling the FWD Blazer to realize the 4,500-pound max tow rating that the AWD models have enjoyed for 2019 and 2020 MY.

Finally, an 18-inch spare aluminum wheel is now standard on the RS FWD model. For the 2019 and 2020 model years, this particular trim shipped with an 18-inch steel spare. For 2021, all Blazer trims will continue shipping with an 18-inch steel spare, save for the RS FWD (which, as we already mentioned, will ship with an aluminum spare) and the base L model (which does not ship with a spare).

Packages

There are two package-level changes in store for the 2021 Chevy Blazer. The first involves the Sound & Technology Package gaining the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system with connected Navigation (IOU), which takes over for the IOT unit being deleted for the 2021 model year. The package is available on the 3LT trim and includes the following features:

  • Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system with connected Navigation and 8-inch diagonal HD color touchscreen (IOU)
  • Bose premium 8-speaker system
  • 4.2-inch display with infotainment connectivity within gauge cluster
  • 2 USB data ports with SD Card Reader located within front center storage bin
  • HD Surround Vision
  • Rear Camera Mirror
  • 120-volt power outlet

Additionally, the Enhanced Convenience and Driver Confidence II Package, which was available on the RS trim for 2019 and 2020 models, has been deleted. Its contents have been split out into two packages – Enhanced Convenience Package (ZL8) and Driver Confidence II Package. Both packages are available on the Blazer RS, and include the following features:

Enhanced Convenience Package includes:

  • Bose premium 8-speaker system
  • Memory settings
  • Rear outboard heated seats
  • Driver and front passenger ventilated seats
  • Power tilt and telescoping steering column

Driver Confidence II Package includes:

  • Wireless Phone Charging
  • HD Surround Vision
  • Rear Camera Mirror
  • Adaptive Cruise Control – Advanced
  • Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Safety Alert Seat
  • LED Headlamps

Looking Ahead

We expect the current, fifth-generation Blazer to remain in production through the 2025 model year, and that an all-new model would show up around that timeframe. We also expect a midcycle enhancement, otherwise known as an MCE or refresh, to take place for the 2022 model year.

  1. What exactly is different between the Infotainment systems?

    1. From a user standpoint, none.

  2. They went too far with deleting the leather wheel. I sure hope it’s bundled with the convenience package. I can understand the base L and maybe the 1LT but the pricey 2LT should have kept the leather as std. And I’ll bet taking away the twin clutch AWD on the Premier will not lower the price any.

    1. What are the exact differences between the leather and regular steering wheel? Is it visually different? How much different does it feel? Place them side by side and can you distinguish between the two?

    2. Still a Chevy a leather steering wheel is not going to help it. On second thought the leather wheel is the best part of my blazer.
