Remaining 2020 GMC Sierra HD Production Will Be Crew Cab Only: Exclusive

Crew Cabs will account for all remaining orders of the 2020 GMC Sierra HD, GM Authority has learned.

Sources familiar with GM’s production operations have told GMA that the automaker has instructed dealers to no longer accept orders for Regular or Double Cab units of the 2020 GMC Sierra HD. Other configurations that will not be available to order are Chassis Cab / Box Delete units, 2WD trucks equipped with the 6.6L V8 L5P turbo-diesel Duramax engine. The restrictions went into effect in June and will remain in place until production of the 2021 GMC Sierra HD begins in the fourth quarter of 2020.

It would appear that the decision to restrict Sierra HD orders to the Crew Cab is driven by low availability of this cab configuration compared to Regular or Double Cab models. In fact, Big Red seems to be running low on inventory of the Crew Cab after the COVID-19 pandemic caused North American production to be idled for two months, resulting in significant disruptions in dealer stock, particularly for fast-turning models such as the Crew Cabs. To that end, restricting orders in this fashion should allow dealers to restock Crew Cab inventories.

Meanwhile, those who desire a 2020 GMC Sierra HD with either the Regular or Double Cabs might be able to find an available unit in dealer inventory. If not, then it’s worth noting that order banks for the 2021 GMC Sierra HD will open in August, at which point the aforementioned ordering restrictions will likely be lifted.

2020 is first model year of the current-generation GMC Sierra HD, which was completely overhauled (redesigned and re-engineered) on the GM T1 platform. The 2020 Sierra HD went on sale in Q3 of 2019. Since its launch, the 2020 GMC Sierra HD has won numerous accolades and awards. It was recently named the best large heavy duty pickup in the J.D. Power 2020 APEAL Study.

The 2020 GMC Sierra HD lineup consists of the three-quarter-ton Sierra 2500HD in single rear-wheel configuration as well as the one-ton Sierra 3500HD in either the single-rear-wheel or double-rear-wheel (DRW or dually) setup. The chassis cab (box delete) model was the last to go into production.

The 2020 GMC Sierra HD is offered with two engine choices:

  • The all-new, naturally-aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine mated to GM’s six-speed, heavy-duty automatic transmission. The combination is rated at 401 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque.
  • The 6.6L V8 L5P turbo-diesel Duramax engine mated to an Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission. The combo is rated at 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque.

2020 Sierra HD production takes place at the GM Flint Assembly plant in Michigan, and the GM Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Indiana, depending on cab.

One of the more notable changes to the 2021 GMC Sierra HD is the addition of FlexFuel capability for the 6.6L L8T gasoline engine.

    1. Is that why you opted for a 2 door car when they had the Chevy SS out?

      1. I don’t recall a camaro or a chevy ss being a pickup… they’re not even in the same realm so I don’t understand the point of your comment

  2. They are having a lot of trouble meeting demand for the Sierra HD.

Just not enough inventory. These trucks are hot.

    1. Demand has caught up with supply…as a result of Quarantine….not because they are “hot” The local dealership said all Flatbed/chassis cabs (of any brand) are lasting about 3 days on their lot if they can get them around here and another dealership will give you nearly anything for a trade in since auctions were closed!

    2. Lol!!!!!! Every truck is in hot demand because of the Coronavirus.

  4. I really doesn’t matter for fleet customers, GM has not been taking any fleet orders for regular cabs since early March. Any fleet orders placed since then were for 2021’s anyway. GM has been making life hard for fleet customers wanting regular cab HD pickups and chassis/cabs since early 2018. No telling how many Fords and Rams GM ‘sold’ because they didn’t have and wouldn’t take orders for regular cabs.

    1. You got that right. They have been making it difficult on the non fleet commercial buyer as well. If you don’t have an FAN, they don’t seem to care.

    2. Yea, honestly, everytime I see a hotshot trucking channel on YouTube, the owner has a Ford or Ram.

  5. my old Cummins finally took a dump. It’s a crew cab/long bed, which is what I want to replace it with. We looked at Ford last weekend, they had 10 on the lot of exactly what I want (that cab/bed combo, 4WD, base trim). Was going to cross shop with GMC but I guess this makes it an easy decision. And Dodge doesn’t even offer extended cab/long bed, regardless of covid. Ford it is…

    1. It’s worse than you think. Dodge hasn’t even sold trucks at all since 2010!
